One of the shrewdest Oscarologists on the planet is Tariq Khan of Fox News, who often generously shares his views of current and past derbies with Gold Derby readers. Here he takes a nostalgic look at the past two decades, offering his take on the most competitive derbies. Words below are Tariq's. Thanks, m'friend!
We’ve often discussed those Oscar races that seem just too close to call . . . where it’s clear (or at least seems clear) that the eventual winner will nab the Oscar with only a few more votes than his or her nearest competitor. While we can never really know for sure (unless we get one of those top jobs at the accounting firm of PricewaterhouseCoopers,) we do have some idea of what may have been the closest races in Oscar history. Allow me to present what I believe were the 10 closest acting races over the course of the past 20 years. »

Hi everyone, MattCanada here with another weekly dose of gay cinema. This week we're looking at Philadelphia, the Oscar winning courtroom drama, essentially the defining Hollywood response to the AIDS epidemic.
I first saw this film as a kid. I must have been about seven when I watched it with my parents and it was definitely my, and probably many other people's, introduction to AIDS. For me it continues to shape how I think about the virus, the stigma, and the epidemic. Longtime Companion opened a few years earlier but this was the first mainstream prestige film to deal with AIDS and homophobia. Having two big stars in Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington must have seemed like a big step for Hollywood. All of this is well and good, but rewatching the film for the first time in over a decade, I had serious problems with its filmic construction and especially its politics. »

Paul Newman's grieving widow Joanne Woodward suffered her own cancer scare last month, a year after the movie legend lost his battle with the disease.
The actress recently underwent a biopsy after a medical test reportedly showed she had a growth on her lung.
A source tells the National Enquirer, "A growth was detected and there were fears that she was going to be diagnosed with lung cancer - just like Paul had been.
"She lives with Paul's passing every hour of every single day, and this scare brought back the vivid nightmares of when he was diagnosed and the long battle he had to endure before he died.
"Joanne was facing the possibility that she would be struck down by the same disease as Paul."
Woodward was relieved when the growth was ruled benign, but the stress of the situation has taken its toll on the 79 year old and pals fear for her health after she turned up to a charity gala in Connecticut looking frail.
The insider adds, "She was pale, and her hair was whiter and thinner."
Newman lost his two-year battle with lung cancer in September 2008, at the age of 83.
Both he and his wife were heavy smokers for much of their lives. »

What follows is my original top ten list of 2000... or rather the revised version I published in 2002. Let's discuss each year of this decade as it winds down! Who's with me?!? It's always interesting to see which films remained at the forefront of our memory and which fade... both for a variety of reasons, quality being only one factor. New comments are in red.
Please note: This list was based on NYC release dates in the year 2000. Some movies are listed as different years at the IMDb based on when they were released in their home country or in La or whatnot.
Runners Up (in descending order): Une Liaisons Pornographique, Nurse Betty, You Can Count On Me, Before Night Falls, Pola X, Chicken Run, American Psycho, Wonder Boys and Billy Elliott Um... What The Hell are some of these movies doing outside the top ten list? You Can Count on Me »

Westport Country Playhouse's Gala 2009 will feature a star-studded evening of entertainment and conviviality on Monday, November 2, highlighted by special salutes to Mary Rodgers Guettel, composer, and Elisabeth Morten, Playhouse board of trustees chairman. Honorary gala co-chairs are Anne Keefe and JoAnne Woodward, former Playhouse artistic directors. Proceeds, in part, will support the Woodward Intern and Apprentice program, recently named in recognition of Ms. Woodward's interest in training the next generation of theater artists. The Playhouse's intern and apprentice program has been in existence since 1946.
A special tribute will be made to Ms. Rodgers Guettel, who began her theatrical career as a Playhouse intern in 1950, and went on to write the music for the Broadway hit, "Once Upon a Mattress." She is the daughter of composer Richard Rodgers. Stephen Sondheim, who also was in the 1950 Playhouse intern class, and Christopher Plummer, will be present to honor Ms. Rodgers Guettel.

Shankman's got spirit!
Do you follow the Oscar show news in the way you follow the Oscars? I don't so much, despite this life I lead constantly writin' about the awards themselves. I care who hosts to some degree but I tend to ignore the rest. But I found it interesting this week when director Adam Shankman (Hairspray) was named as one of the producers and his choreography skills were noted as a reason to be enthused about this assignment. At least he has a sense of humor about his, um, limited history with the big event I was one of Paula Abdul's 'Under the Sea' pirates," Shankman said. "The last time I was at the Oscars, I was in Lycra, with a pirate hat on. Shankman's presence must mean more musical numbers. I'm all for musical numbers provided they rehire Hugh Jackman as host. He was so fine last year. »

This week, after reading over Laremy's list of Top Ten Coen Bros. Films I figured it was about time to watch the four remaining films of theirs I had not yet seen. On top of that I continued my viewing of the new 13 film Paul Newman DVD Collection with a film I loved that ultimately ended up inspiring me to watch another 1958 Newman film. It was a relatively slow week for me, but there's enough to make for a conversation.
As always, remember you can keep tabs on my personal Netflix queue right here. I now have 50 friends on the movie rental site and would love to have a few more if those of you out there with accounts are interested. Now, here's the recap of my week in movies...

Chicago – Actress Karen Allen, who made a debut smash in the 1978 film ‘Animal House,’ is most likely to be remembered as Marion in ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ and 2008’s ‘Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.’
But the versatile performer is more than just a companion for Indiana Jones, having a long career in movies and on stage, including the films ‘The Glass Menagerie,’ ‘Challenger’ (playing astronaut Christa McAuliffe) and ‘The Perfect Storm.’
HollywoodChicago.com caught up with Ms. Allen during her appearance at the new Hollywood Palms Cinema in Naperville, Illinois, as she signed autographs and introduced a special showing of Raiders. She talked about the two Indiana Jones movies, her connection to Paul Newman and how she barely kept her head above water while making ‘The Perfect Storm.’

Hollywood has long been hailed as the dream factory, and what could be dreamier than two perfect star specimens taking their romance into real life? Against the odds, some couples even stick it out longer than the proverbial Hollywood minute. Witness the decades-long devotion of the recently deceased Farrah Fawcett and Ryan O'Neal and the late Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, who stuck together 'til death did them part. »

Three weeks after Farrah Fawcett died, she earned the fourth Emmy nomination of her career, as executive producer of "Farrah's Story." The documentary detailed her courageous but ultimately losing battle against cancer. Viewers who tuned in to the May 15 special on NBC saw up close the valiant struggle of this onetime "Charlie's Angels" star. Fawcett's death was announced June 25 just hours before the end of voting to determine the nominees for this year's Emmy Awards. Television's highest honor eluded this small-screen icon, who earned three acting Emmy nominations during her three-decade-plus career. "Farrah's Story" was one of 43 shows in competition for the final five slots on the Emmy ballot for outstanding nonfiction special. It will now compete against "The Alzheimer's Project: Momentum in Science" (HBO); "Michael J. Fox: Adventures of an Incurable Optimist" (ABC), "102 Minutes That Changed America" (History), and "Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired" (HBO). HBO and PBS documentaries »

It's tough to lose a legend like Paul Newman, and the rush of DVDs, biographies, and rumor mongering don't make it any easier. The rush of merchandising seems to walk a fine line between actually honoring the person, and pure graveyard profit. You can decide what category Fox's upcoming Paul Newman Tribute Collection falls into. I'm going to err on the side of classy, even at its steep price of $89.98, because it contains a total of 17 DVDs. The list includes:
The Long, Hot Summer (the film that Newman Joanne Woodward met on)
Rally 'Round the Flag, Boys
From the Terrace
The Hustler Collector's Edition
Hemingway's Adventures of a Young Man
What a Way to Go!
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid Collector's Edition
The Towering Inferno Special Edition
Buffalo Bill and the Indians Or Sitting Bull's History Lesson
The Verdict Collector's Edition

All five of last year's Emmy rivals for best comedy actress are back in the race and seem likely to return on July 16: Christina Applegate ("Samantha Who?"), America Ferrera ("Ugly Betty"), Tina Fey ("30 Rock"), Julia Louis-Dreyfus ("The New Adventures of Old Christine") and Mary-Louise Parker ("Weeds"). Since the TV academy is expanding this category to six contenders this year, that means there's room for one more. Don't count out Amy Poehler just because "Parks and Recreation" hasn't scored big with TV critics and Nielsen viewers. Unlike the previous three Emmy derbies, nominees will be chosen by a popular vote of members of the academy's acting branch – and, of course, Poehler is hugely popular. Personally, I'm rooting for her to get in. Poehler told Gold Derby that there will be no "diva clawfest" between her and former "Saturday Night Live" costar Tina Fey (last year's champ) if they both nab noms, »

Julia Roberts turned to Paul Newman's widow Joanne Woodward to help calm her nerves before stepping onstage at a New York benefit this week to lead a touching tribute to the late actor.
Roberts celebrated Newman's memory at Manhattan's Lincoln Center on Monday at a fundraising gala in aid of the legendary star's Hole in the Wall Camps, an organisation founded by the actor in 1988 to help children with serious and life-threatening illnesses.
The actress, who served as a counsellor at the organisation's summer camps over 13 years ago, took to the podium and revealed she had called Woodward earlier in the day to ask if there was anything specific she should mention in her speech.
Roberts recalls, "I called Joanne Woodward, his lovely wife, and said, 'What do we do? What do I talk about?' and she said, 'Just the fun that we had, that we all had, and that he really enjoyed his life.'"

Julia Roberts, Jerry Seinfeld, Robert Redford, Bill Clinton, Harry Connick Jr. and Kristin Chenoweth helped deliver some serious star power to Monday's Lincoln Center gala in New York on behalf of Paul Newman's Hole in the Wall Camps and honor the beloved, late founder of the charity benefiting children with life-threatening medical conditions. Among what they had to say about Newman, who died last year, was: • "We've done a lot of these galas," Julia Roberts said, after doing a dancing kick line with kids who have attended the camps. "And I've never stood up without my buddy Paul Newman. »

Actor Paul Newman passed away less than a year ago at the age of 83 and now that he's gone writer Darwin Porter is releasing a book in which Marlon Brando says that Newman was bisexual and had affairs with men. Porter interviewed Brando before "The Godfather" star died in 2004 and waited until now to release a book that may tarnish a legend's reputation, knowing that Newman will not be able to dispute the allegations. In his book, "Paul Newman: The Man Behind The Baby Blues," Porter quotes Brando as saying, "He never fooled me. Paul Newman had just as many on-location affairs as the rest of us, and he was just as bisexual as I was. But, where I was always getting caught with my pants down, he managed to do it in the dark." Porter told The Globe that he's been doing everything he can to find out »

Paul Newman has been 'outed' from beyond the grave by Marlon Brando, according to writer Darwin Porter's scandalous new book on the late movie legend.
Porter interviewed Brando about Newman before the acting great died in 2004 - and he was stunned with what the heavyweight star let slip.
In his book, Paul Newman: The Man Behind The Baby Blues, he quotes Brando as saying, "He never fooled me. Paul Newman had just as many on-location affairs as the rest of us, and he was just as bisexual as I was. But, where I was always getting caught with my pants down, he managed to do it in the dark."
Porter tells America's the Globe he has been tracking Newman's secret sexual encounters since he met the actor in 1959 and alleges in his new book the late star, who was happily married to actress Joanne Woodward for 50 years, bedded icons like Grace Kelly, Judy Garland, Natalie Wood and Marilyn Monroe.
The writer also claims Newman and James Dean had a gay romance.
But the actor's family has dismissed Porter's book, claiming the sex allegations are "disgusting".
A source says, "Paul knew there were rumours out there about his sexuality and to have to face them when he's not here to dispute them is Joanne's worst nightmare." »

Have you seen Vanity Fair's list of Hollywood's rarest unions: the longterm actor/actress marriage? I don't need to tell you that most Tinseltown marriages end in divorce. Yet some couple stick by each other and anyone in a long term relationship or marriage will know what a feat that often is. The immortal Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward are the longest lasting dual movie star marriage -- they were married for 50 years before Newman's death (2008, Rip). But the lengthiest dual actor marriages ever? The Reagans with 52 years and, up at the tippity top, recent Oscar nominee Ruby Dee (American Gangster) and Ossie Davis (2005, Rip) with 56 years of happily ever after.
I'm sure you've heard the famous Newman paraphrase about fidelity Why fool around with hamburger when you have steak at home? but what I loved most about their celebrated marriage was that they weren't overly sentimental about it in interviews, »

Paul Newman's widow is to host a benefit for the kids camp charity the movie icon founded.
The actor created the Hole in the Wall Camps for children with serious illnesses and life-threatening conditions and Joanne Woodward is keen for the cause to continue.
She'll host an all-star gala at New York's Lincoln Center on 8 June to remember her late husband and the camps he created 20 years ago.
Many of the stars on the bill, including Julia Roberts, Harry Connick Jr., Art Garfunkel and Newman's longtime pal Robert Redford, will be donating their performance fee to the charity and the Newman's Own Foundation will cover additional costs.
A spokesman for the event says, "All expenses of the event have been underwritten, allowing 100 per cent of tickets to go to the Hole in the Wall Camps Foundation."
Newman lost his battle with cancer in September. »
