Julie Taymor Gender-Bends 'The Tempest' with Helen Mirren

8 October 2008 4:49 PM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

Prepare yourself for even more Shakespeare. With a terrific assemblage of talent for a 2010 remake of King Lear already making headlines, The Hollywood Reporter today announced that Across the Universe director Julie Taymor will direct a new version of The Tempest starring recent Oscar winner Helen Mirren as Prospero...er, Prospera, in this case.

Yes, Taymor has changed the gender of one of Shakespeare's more interesting characters, and she is surrounding Mirren with Djimon Housou, Alfred Molina, Jeremy Irons, Ben Whishaw, Felicity Jones...and Russell Brand from Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Uh-huh. Geoffrey Rush may also join the ensemble.

Taymor has done the Bard thing before, directing 1999's Titus.

Helen Is Queen Again In The Tempest

8 October 2008 2:59 PM, PDT | From cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news

Pick a random bunch of names of actors out of a hat, and you might just come up with the cast of Julie Taymor's The Tempest, an adaptation of the Shakespeare play. Taymor, who set teen romance to Beatles songs last year with Across the Universe, is apparently set on breaking the rules from the first moment in this one; cast in the lead role of Prospero, the duke on the island, is Helen Mirren-- yes, Helen Mirren the lady. The character will apparently be renamed Prospera, and will be surrounded by a seriously motley crew-- Jeremy Irons, Russell Brand, Ben Whishaw, Djimon Hounsou and maybe even Geoffrey Rush. The Hollywood Reporter says the movie will start filming this November in Hawaii, which means this bunch will almost certainly have a run-in with the Lost crew. Oh to see Helen Mirren, playing royalty once again, face off against Ben!

Anatomy Of A Movie Fanatic: How far are you willing to go? Just what does it take to be one?

15 August 2008 9:09 PM, PDT | From The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news

When I heard the news that The Twilight Lexicon had been hacked, my immediate reaction was anger. I don't have to know the details or why it was hacked, I just know that I have friends who must have spent sleepless nights trying to find solutions to keep their website online. I'm a movie fan and quite serious about it. If I happen to love a movie, then I'll probably watch it over and over, memorize lines from it and collect anything related to it - from its soundtrack to interviews published in magazines and on the web. If it's been adapted from a book, then I'll probably buy the book too. The same applies to actors. I have my list of all-time favorites: River Phoenix, Ethan Hawke, Jamie Bell, Romain Duris, Ben Whishaw. - - - A Few Personal Favorites: When I first saw Stand by Me (http://www.

The Waugh Of Averages

24 July 2008 9:08 PM, PDT | From NYPost.com | See recent New York Post news

The problem with painting a masterpiece is that some one may come along and build a museum around it.

The big-screen adapta tion of Evelyn Waugh's great and (not but) sentimental novel "Brideshead Revisited" is honorable and respectful but sober, which is an odd trait for a story whose entire first half is about about being drunk on youth, wealth and champagne.

Matthew Goode, the rake in "Match Point," plays Charles Ryder, a middle-age officer in WWII Britain billeted at the fortress-size estate of the title.

Brideshead Revisited

24 July 2008 4:06 PM, PDT | From avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news

Although it will doubtless find detractors among fans of both Evelyn Waugh's novel and the 1981 PBS miniseries, Julian Jarrold's Brideshead Revisited succeeds handily on its own terms. It lacks the visual pyrotechnics of Joe Wright's Pride & Prejudice, but Jarrold's movie is otherwise a kindred spirit, stripped of voiceover and other markers of literary bona fides. It's a movie of its own, not merely an attempt to cram as much of its source as possible within the confines of a theatrical feature. Jarrold—who previously risked the wrath of the Jane Austen faithful with Becoming Jane—joins screenwriters Jeremy Brock and Andrew Davies in departing radically from Waugh's plot, boiling the dramatis personae down to three central characters: Julia Flyte (Hayley Atwell), the eldest daughter of a wealthy Catholic family; her brother Sebastian (Ben Whishaw), the family's bibulous black sheep; and Charles Ryder (Matthew Goode), a middle-class Londoner who becomes.

In the film, Charles Ryder (Matthew Goode, “Match Point,” “The Lookout”) becomes entranced with the noble Marchmain family, first through the charming and provocative Sebastian Flyte(Ben Whishaw, “Perfume: The Story of a Murderer”), and then his sophisticated sister, Julia (Hayley Atwell, “Cassandra’s Dream” and the upcoming “The Duchess”). The rise and fall of Charles’ infatuations reflect the decline of a decadent era in England [...]

"I'm Not There," "La Roue"

13 May 2008 3:53 AM, PDT | From ifc.com | See recent IFC news

By Michael Atkinson

Todd Haynes' "I'm Not There" (2007) is such a risky, ambitious, passionate conceptual big-brain freak of a movie that, whether you find yourself loving it or hating it or not knowing what in hell to make of it, you can sympathize and even agree with anyone who ends up with the opposite takeaway. Ambivalence is an appropriate response, and one Haynes probably intended, given his subject: Bob Dylan, or, rather, the elusive, chameleonic, deliberately free-associative nature of Dylan's public personality, and the idealized and sometimes ridiculous ways we've conceived it for ourselves, and hence the absurdity of pop culture celebrity in general. A lot of abstracted meat and potatoes for one film to tackle, and Haynes, easily the most theoretical and analytical indie filmmaker at work today, goes for the gusto, crafting a weave-movie made of strands that only occasionally cross each other's dreamscapes and more often launch out into the ether.
