File this one under "Thanks for nothing, Shrub." That would be the really bulging file I keep on my desk. So what's the issue?

This week Huffington Post blogger Ryan Grim reported that a new book coming out about President George Bush includes the fact that Bush declined to denounce same-sex marriage in his commencement speech at Furman University in 2008 because he wasn't "...going to tell some gay kid in the audience that he can't get married."

No, he was just going to get elected by demonizing the gay kid, and every other 'mo in the country, by allowing henchman Karl Rove to orchestrate two of the most anti-gay presidential campaigns ever run in the U.S. Two campaigns the fueled a wave of constitutional amendments banning same-sex marriage across America.

But, hey, Bush wouldn't actually deliver the bad news to the gay college kid himself because he's such a stand up guy. »

Coroner’s Report: Red Velvet

Long time no see kids. My bad.  We're getting ready to kick off 31 Days of Horror again this year, obviously starting on October 1st.  I'm going to use that as my excuse for taking some time away from the column, rather than just admitting I'm lazy.  This week we're talking Red Velvet, which has very little to do with the delicious, buttery cake and more to do with quasi-experimental horror.  This flick stars Henry Thomas, whose name you probably can't place - he was Elliot in E.T. and is about a weirdo named Aaron who is telling the made up macabre story about how Linda's friends were all killed by a pscyho murderer.  But since this is a horror movie, you're probably wondering just how made up that story is. If you’ve ever wanted to see a movie that shows you what a drug trip looks like from the inside, and has a plot based on the Tibetan Book of the Dead, then you’ll very much want to see Gaspar Noé’s incredibly psychedelic, down and (very) dirty Enter The Void.

The storyline is very very cool, but hardly complex, and as everyone in the theatre could guess the ending at least halfway through the movie, I’m not going to really give anything away by telling you the plot is driven by an act of revenge, an almost kinky brother-sister love story, and everything the Tibetans can teach about life after death. I found myself wondering if Tim Leary was really dead or simply outside, looking in. The plot is secondary. »

Q: Do you know if any of the contestants on Survivor: Samoa are going to be Glbt? I just checked out their profiles and at least three of the guys list things like "womanizer", "never been rejected", and "a woman's dream." Is CBS trying to overly heteroize the show that has been strategically won by at least two openly gay men (Todd and Hatch)? – Topher, Toronto, Canada

A: There are no gay male contestants that we know of (although it’s always possible someone hasn’t yet come out to the network).

Is CBS trying to “heteroize” the show? Although I love your coining of a new term, I’d strenuously argue that they’re not. In fact, we recently talked with Jeff Probst, and I’m convinced he doesn’t see the show in those terms at all.

[DVD Review] Sling Blade

With Billy Bob Thornton’s recent trend of starring in piss-poor comedies where he’s nothing but an arrogant and abusive asshole, it’s easy to forget that the man can be an acting giant when he wants to be. Every now and then we get a glimpse of his talent with films like Monster Ball, but one of his most interesting films is by far the 1996 drama Sling Blade. In Sling Blade, Thornton not only proved his acting chops beyond any doubt, but he established himself as an Oscar-worthy screenwriter. If those two things aren’t enough to make you take a second long look at Billy Bob’s career then nothing will. However, for every two steps forward he takes with his writing and acting, his direction of the film suffers from spreading himself too thin.

Meet the other gay actor playing a new gay character on "One Life to Live"

Seriously, did someone set off a gay bomb at One Life to Live? Hot on the tail of out actor (and local favorite, from what I can tell) Scott Evans stepping up the role of gay character Fish opposite Kyle (Brett Claywell) we're getting casting scoop the legacy soap has just cast another gay actor to play another gay role related to the Kyle/Fish storyline.

Meet Nicholas Rodriguez, who will play Nick (starting August 14th), another gay character that will be involved in the budding gay couple's story.

ABC Renews ‘Castle,’ ‘Scrubs’; Cancels ‘The Unusuals,’ ‘Cupid’

Chicago – ABC is still struggling to find the next big hit to stand next to monsters like “Lost,” “Desperate Housewives,” and “Grey’s Anatomy,” and they decided to give Nathan Fillion & Stana Katic’s “Castle” a shot at hit status, but cancelled several other new shows, including “The Unusuals” and “Cupid”.

ABC announced their fall schedule today and made a few surprise choices, bringing back the increasingly interesting “Castle” and giving another chance to “Better Off Ted” and “True Beauty”.

Perhaps the most surprising move, especially considering the show’s poignant and excellent series finale, has to be the return of “Scrubs,” which will be back for midseason. They also announced 11 new series for fall and midseason.

ABC Announces Primetime 2009-2010 Programming Slate

ABC unveiled its 2009-2010 primetime schedule this morning and here is the full press release:

Stephen McPherson, president, ABC Entertainment Group, today outlined ABC's plans for next season and unveiled the network's 2009-10 fall schedule before the advertising and media communities at Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall.

New fall and midseason series include "Cougar Town," "The Deep End," "Eastwick," "Flash Forward," "The Forgotten," "Hank," "Happy Town," "The Middle," "Modern Family," "Shark Tank" and "V."

"Better Off Ted," "Castle," "Scrubs" and "True Beauty" join previously announced returning series "America's Funniest Home Videos," "The Bachelor," "Brothers & Sisters," "Dancing with the Stars," "Desperate Housewives," "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," "Grey's Anatomy," "Lost," "Private Practice," "Supernanny," "Ugly Betty," "Wife Swap" and 20/20. "Saturday Night College Football" will also return.

GLAAD Media Awards

I attended the 20th Annual GLAAD Media Awards at the Nokia Center in Los Angeles on on April 18. When I told a number of lesbian friends that I would be going to this, rather than lurking typically around West Hollywood on a Saturday night, they told me this was pointless because GLAAD is mostly for guys. Some of my best friends know guys, so I decided to give it a whirl. 

And guess what? It was a giant sea of gay. Shocking. Actually, I have never seen so many gay people in one room. »

So spring is in the air, and the last thing I want to be doing right now is sitting at a computer writing this column, and the last thing you want to be doing is sitting at your work computer reading the damn thing.

No, we want to be out in the sunshine with the top down and the wind of freedom blowing through our hair. Okay, blowing through your hair – I don’t have hair anymore, I have stubble. But still, when I’m right, I’m right, right?

Of course, I’m right. So let’s blow this joint! Throw a 12-pack into the back of this Mustang and let’s peel off down that yellow brick road!
