'Young@Heart' Sings Its Way to Narrative Film

16 November 2009 7:32 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Remember that super-cute and super-rocking senior documentary Young@Heart, which hit screens last year? It's becoming a feature film, and The Hollywood Reporter posts that Working Title has found a new scribe in Will Reiser (I'm With Cancer). The rights had originally been bought back in 2007, and writer Bob Nelson had written a draft, but now, much like their senior subjects, the project is getting a new jolt of life.

As I hope you know by now, the film follows a chorus of senior citizens (average age of 80) who came together and toured -- not singing "old folks" songs for retirement homes, but all-out mainstream concerts featuring modern hits and classics from the likes of The Clash, Coldplay, and James Brown. The documentary dipped into their performances and their lives (some passed away during production).

Can you think of any movie that could be more fun on the big screen? »

Free Flick of the Day: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

13 November 2009 2:32 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

If you were anxious for another free dose of Sergio Leone after last week's suggestion of For a Few Dollars More, you're in luck! The third and final installment of the Dollars / Man With No Name Trilogy just happens to be up on SlashControl right now. I can't think of a better gang to spend Friday the 13th with than The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly is an epic, dizzying adventure set in the middle of the Civil War, and circles around three unsavory fellows and their hunt for a fortune in Confederate gold. It's probably the most famous and the most popular of Leone's westerns and Ennio Morricone's soundtracks. Every moment of this film is iconic. But the best part of the film isn't the sweeping battles, the mournful soldiers, or the explosive shoot-outs; it's the hateful alliance between Blondie »

The "Dollars Trilogy" Free on Hulu

5 November 2009 10:27 AM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

A quick heads-up for Sergio Leone and Clint Eastwood fans. All three of their "Man with No Name" westerns are now up on Hulu for free viewing. Hulu is only going to have these movies up until the end of November, so don't waste time, pilgrim. You can watch all three films right here.

A Fistful of Dollars originally followed the trend of remaking Akira Kurosawa's samurai films as westerns. I say trend, but really there was only, what, The Magnificent Seven? Fistful uses the plot of Kurosawa's Yojimbo as its premise, then reshapes it into Leone's own signature style. Then came the pseudo-sequel, For a Few Dollars More. Leone never meant for the three films to be a trilogy, but it just turned out that way due to Eastwood's same look and acting style in all three.  The Good, The Bad and the Ugly is a prequel of sorts, »

What I Watched, What You Watched: Installment #15

1 November 2009 2:16 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

On top of the titles listed below I also watch the Criterion Blu-ray for Howards End and the Blu-ray for Warner Home Video's North By Northwest, both of which will be reviewed on Tuesday along with the Criterion Blu-ray for Wings of Desire. On top of that I watched the Blu-ray for Disney/Pixar's Up, which will be reviewed in a couple of weeks along with the Blu-ray versions of Monsters, Inc. and Cars.

As for the titles listed below, the first three are the final three of Sony's November 3 release of Film Noir Collection Volume One after I discussed my thoughts on The Sniper and 5 Against the House last week. You can get more details on the complete set right here and a link to buy the set is included with all three films below. As a quick note, the only one of the five I didn't particularly »

New York, I Love You Enough to Sit Through a Disastrous Premiere

15 October 2009 3:20 PM, PDT | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

By the time the lights went down at the premiere of New York, I Love You at the Ziegfeld theater last night, I was already looking forward to titling my review “New York, I Hate You.” After waiting an hour in a line that literally snaked around a midtown-Manhattan city block, I finally arrived at the will-call desk and found that, even though I’d rsvp’d, there was no record of Vanity Fair on the list. Or rather, on the lists: there were eleven directors and as many production companies behind the portmanteau film, and it seems that all of them, as well as every actor, every sponsor, every D.P., every P.A., every dolly grip, and caterer involved with the movie had their own guest list. The only seat they could find for me, in the 1,131-seat theater, was in the front row. My opinion of a »

With the short film anthology “New York, I Love You” (a sort of sequel to “Paris, je t’aime”) set for release October 16th, Vivendi Entertainment has released a ton of clips and I’ve posted all of them after the jump. While most film’s get four to eight clips released for promotional purposes, due to how large the cast is and how each person needs a clip when promoting the movie on a talk show, the studio has released a whopping 16 clips and it’s about sixteen minutes of the movie. So if you’ve been waiting for the film, you can see a lot of it right now. If you’re not familiar with “New York, I Love You”, the film’s got a huge cast and eleven directors telling stories about New York City and love. Take a look:

MovieWeb's 2009 Fall Movie Guide!

1 September 2009 7:54 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Labor Day weekend is coming up, and it's a holiday that marks the end of the summer movie season along with summer itself. All the kids are heading back to the classroom for another dreaded year of school and (for those in L.A. like myself) the weather starts to cool... hopefully. While fall usually isn't seen as a cinematic hotbed, with the blockbuster summer season over, there are still plenty of quality films to check out at the box office. This year we have Megan Fox's possessed body, a sensational animated film and a new zombie adventure. There's a lot more that I'm looking forward to this fall, so here is a comphrehensive look at what you can expect from this fall movie season.

Spoilers Ahead!!!

Atomic Popcorn: So, can we talk about working with Tarantino and stepping into a project like this?

Fassbender is a Basterd

Fassbender: Well, I suppose it’s sort of [pause] first thing’s that it was very surreal for me, and because the first thing I did when I was starting to get into the business was when I was 18 and me and my friends got together and did a stage version of Reservoir Dogs in a local nightclub. Well, in Ireland, it’s called disco, really. So that was my first steps in getting into a career, so to actually work with him was a dream come true. And once I sort of got beyond that, it’s just fascinating to watch the man work, cause he really does work in his unique sort of way. And also the fact that he’s just so knowledge able in film, »

New York, I Love You Movie Trailer

7 August 2009 12:30 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Vivendi Entertainment has released a new movie trailer for the anthology film project New York, I Love You. The movie is the next film from the producers of Paris, je t'aime, and features another anthology of short films, this time focusing on the stories of love in New York's five boroughs. I Love California, but I've always wanted to live in Manhattan (maybe someday). Films like this certainly don't help my obsessions with "Gotham" and short films. The film includes short films directed by Jian Wen, Mira Nair, Brett Ratner, Allen Hughes, Shekhar Khapur, Natalie Portman, Fatih Akin, Joshua Marston and Randy Balsmyer. The film's ensemble cast includes: Bradley Cooper, Andy Garcia, Hayden Christensen, Rachel Bilson, Natalie Portman, Irrfan Khan, Emilie Ohana, Orlando Bloom, Christina Ricci, Maggie Q, Ethan Hawke, James Caan, Blake Lively, Drea de Matteo, John Hurt, Shia Labeouf, Burt Young, Chris Cooper, Eli Wallach and Cloris Leachman. »

It's Complicated Trailer Online

7 August 2009 12:20 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Here's a trailer for It's Complicated, a love-triangle rom-com starring Meryl Streep, Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin, from writer/director Nancy Meyers.Meyers previously brought us What Women Want and The Holiday, amongst others, so the form here is fairly clear. Hopefully this will have more in common with the super-lovely Kate Winslett / Eli Wallach half of The Holiday than the super-awful Cameron Diaz / Jude Law story. The temptation, as always, is to say things like "Steve Martin used to be funny, you know", but this actualy looks amiable enough, and it's refreshing to see a relationship comedy with an older cast, for once.Baldwin only has third billing, but it looks to us as if he's going to comprehensively steal this movie. Find out on January 8th. »

With a new film from Sally Potter arriving online and John Boorman and Peter Greenaway's latest work exclusively hitting DVD shelves, enjoying a night at the movies no longer necessarily means at your local theater (though we've got the lowdown of what's playing there as well). From August to October, one doesn't need to move from the couch to see a Val Kilmer double bill, a James Franco-Sienna Miller romantic comedy and the last performance from the late, great Natasha Richardson, not to mention Robert Pattinson and Jet Li imports and a host of foreign films and documentaries well worth your time on demand, online and on DVD.

Circle of Iron Blu-ray Review

15 July 2009 3:33 AM, PDT | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Circle of Iron (1978) was initially conceived as a "dream project" by famed martial artist/actor Bruce Lee in conjunction with two of his students James Coburn (The Great Escape, Our Man Flint) and Sterling Silliphant (Oscar winner for screenplay on In The Heat of the Night) in the late 1960's. Due to disagreements over shooting choices and prejudices in the industry against Asians (especially with no leading man experience) helming a movie, the script was shelved. Once Bruce made a name for himself with titles such as Fists of Fury (1971) and Enter the Dragon (1973), Hollywood was much more accommodating. Ironically Lee was scheduled to meet for discussions about finally bringing the Silent Flute (as the script was titled) to fruition only one day after his untimely death in 1973. David Carradine, of the TV series Kung Fu (1972-75) in a role that Lee coincidentally was in contention for (according to Lee's wife, »

DVD Playhouse—July 2009

By

Allen Gardner

Do The Right Thing: 20th Anniversary Edition (Universal) Spike Lee’s groundbreaking fable about race relations in an ethnically mixed Brooklyn neighborhood during a sweltering New York summer remains as potent, timely and prescient as it was in 1989. Lee is among the cast, which also includes John Turturro, Danny Aiello, Samuel L. Jackson, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, and Rosie Perez (to name a few), that provide the tableaux-like framework for this stunning work. Criminally ignored by Oscar (it wasn't even nominated for Best Picture, but did garner nods for Supporting Actor Danny Aiello and Lee’s screenplay), it endures as a timeless classic. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Commentary by Lee, Ernest Dickerson, Wynn Thomas, Joie Lee; Documentary; Deleted and extended scenes; Featurettes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS 5.1 surround.
