Hollywood is abuzz about the Jessica Simpson and Tony Romo break-up. "The Insider" was on hand as stars kicked off Espy week at the Sports Dream Celebrity Poker and Pool Party at the Playboy Mansion on Monday where everyone from Hugh Hefner and Michael Vartan had something to say about the famous duo calling it quits. "I do think the nature of celebrity complicates relationships," Hefner said, "but it depends on the individual." "Hawthorne" star and "Alias" alum Vartan says, "I'm sorry it's over but I hope they're still friends."

The latest medical drama to hit TNT is just what you would expect it to be: another medical drama. TNT’s new drama series “HawthoRNe,” starring Jada Pinkett Smith, premiered June 16, joining the summer medical premieres of USA Network’s light-hearted “Royal Pains” and Showtime’s dark comedy “Nurse Jackie.” Pinkett Smith stars as Christina Hawthorne, a complex nurse whose compassion for her patients sometimes leads her to react blindly. Hawthorne’s actions may be in the best interest of her patients, but they constantly put her at odds with the doctors and administrative staff of Richmond Trinity Hospital. Stressful days at the hospital are off-balanced by single motherhood. Exactly one year after her husband’s death, Hawthorne must do her best to raise her rebellious teenage daughter. Pinkett Smith is joined by Michael Vartan (Alias), who plays Dr. Tom Wakefield, the Trinity Hospital’s Chief of Surgery. Whereas "Royal Pains

Another medical drama, you say? Michael Vartan promises that TNT's HawthoRNe (premiering Tuesday at 9 pm/Et) offers something different.
"There are a lot of medical series out there," the Alias alum acknowledges in his TVGuide.com video Q&A. "But never has one told the story from the nurses' perspective."
TNT's new drama stars Jada Pinkett Smith as chief nurse Christina Hawthorne and Vartan as Tom Wakefield, the chief of surgery with whom she will butt heads, again and again. Vartan, though, couldn't ask for a livelier scene partner.
"She's amazing," he raves of Pinkett Smith, who also serves as an executive producer. "I really trust her creative vision."

Chicago – TNT’s medical drama “HawthoRNe” would have felt overly generic in any month of the year, but debuting in the same one as Showtime’s far darker, subtler and more entertaining “Nurse Jackie” does the show no favors at all. Jada Pinkett Smith executive-produces and stars in a well-intentioned program with a good pedigree (John Masius of “St. Elsewhere” is one of the producers) but one that feels like a relic of a bygone era of more manipulative television.
Television Rating: 2.0/5.0 The premiere of “HawthoRNe” introduces us to the title character, Nurse Christina Hawthorne, on the one-year anniversary of her husband’s death. Hawthorne is the Chief Nursing Officer at Richmond Trinity Hospital, leading a group of nurses against two-dimensional doctors always trying to screw them over and patients who need them to survive.

TNT has forged a solid reputation for dependable dramatic programming over the past few years, and, although they have some of the biggest shows on cable TV right now, with The Closer, Saving Grace, Raising the Bar and one of my personal favorites, Leverage, there is always room for one more hit on the slate. It looks like TNT will have that additional hit series when Hawthorne, which stars Jada Pinkett Smith as Chief Nursing Officer Christina Hawthorne and Michael Vartan as Chief of Surgery Tom Wakefield, premieres on Tuesday, June 16 at 9 Pm Et on TNT ( for my full review of the pilot episode, which was pretty damn good, folks). I was lucky enough to be invited to a press conference for the new show, where stars Jada Pinkett Smith and Michael Vartan answered a few questions from a small group of reports. Here's what they had to say about

Former Alias star Michael Vartan is battling an expensive and time-consuming addiction to online poker.
The 40 year old picked up the pastime while out of work, and admits it now occupies days he's not filming new medical TV show Hawthorne.
Vartan says, "I play poker for way too many hours - 10 hours a day. I'm trying to wean myself off it.
"When you're not at the top of your profession you have a lot of time on your hands. And I mean, Scorsese's not knocking on my door - I've got to do something."

Michael Vartan makes no apologies about what attracted him to the world of acting. “If we’re gonna be blunt and honest, it’s the money.” Vartan admits when asked what got him into the craft. With a career spanning twenty-plus years, it’s a safe bet that Vartan’s motivations have been tempered by the more artistic trappings of the business. Regardless of why he punches the acting clock now, it is clear that his persona is one that draws and keeps viewers, an attribute that TNT is banking on in part for his run along side Jada Pinkett Smith in Hawthorne. TVOvermind attended a phone conference with Vartan to discuss Hawthorne with the press.
In Hawthorne, Smith plays Chrstina Hawthorne, a strong willed nurse who has dedicated her life to her patients in the wake of losing her husband to cancer. Vartan plays Dr. Tom Wakefield, the oncologist

New and coming to TNT this month is Jada Pinkett Smith-starring and -produced drama, "Hawthorne". A sneak peek is released to give a clue on how committed nurse Christina Hawthorne is to her work and how hard it is to be entangled in the personal lives of her patients.
Hawthorne is a compassionate and headstrong Chief Nursing Officer heading up a group of dedicated nurses at Richmond Trinity Hospital who spend long days and nights on the hospital's front lines. Whether showing humanity to a homeless woman, trying to talk a suicidal cancer patient off a ledge or exposing a doctor's near-fatal error, Hawthorne will do everything in her power to help her patients.
But the long days at the hospital and Hawthorne's intense focus on helping others take a toll on her personal life. She is recently widowed - her husband died after a battle with cancer,

Jada Pinkett Smith has come to television. Smith plays Christina Hawthorne in the eponymous TNT medical drama that focuses on a group of nurses and doctors at Richmond Trinity Hospital.
The pilot opens on the one year anniversary of the death of Christina’s husband. Still desperate to stay connected to her husband, Christina talks to his ashes each night. In the early morning, she rushes to the hospital to save an old friend of her husband, who’s suffering from cancer and tries to kill himself. Her friend survives his suicide attempt and thus begins another crazy day for the hospital’s Chief Nursing Officer.
Smith’s acting is terrific in the pilot. I admit, I haven’t watched a lot of her previous work, but she switches from funny to caring to headstrong in a heartbeat. The interaction with her character’s rebellious teenage daughter, Camille (played by

Lesbian/bi visibility on primetime American television this summer is not much better than it is the rest of the year — which is to say, it's pretty slim pickings.
Among the shows premiering or returning in the next few weeks, there are a few with supporting lesbian/bi characters (Mental, The Closer); one with an out actress in a supporting role (Hawthorne); and a reality show featuring two out female contestants (Top Chef Master).
Here's a review of the pilot or first new episode(s) of all four series, and a short list of the premiere/air dates of other shows that may interest you.
Warning: some mild spoilers, but no major plot points revealed
Mental (Drama, Fox)
Dates: Tuesdays at 9pm Pst/Est, premiering May 26
Cast: Chris Vance (Prison Break), Annabella Sciorra (Queens Supreme, The L Word), Derek Webster (Stargate), Jacqueline McKenzie (4400), Marisa Ramirez (General Hospital), Nicholas Gonzalez (CSI: Miami

Some Cannes footage has been put together in trailer-form for upcoming comedy Demoted, which on the strength of this taster looks pretty amusing.Mike (Sean Astin) and Rodney (Michael Vartan) are mid-level employees with a fondness for playing pranks on office jerk Ken Castro (David Cross). But when their kindly boss dies, Castro is promoted to his place and Mike and Rodney are demoted to the secretarial pool. Where, unsurprisingly, they don't cope too well. The film's directed by American Pie 2's James B. Rogers, which admittedly is no guarantee of funny, and written by Dan Callahan. Let's hope that we get a chance to see it for ourselves.

The folks over at Collider have gotten their hands on a promo trailer for the comedy Demoted. The below clip is set to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival to help sell the film to foreign markets. The flick stars Sean Astin, Michael Vartan, David Cross, Sara Foster, Billy West and Constance Zimmer. It was directed by J ames B. Rogers (American Pie 2). Demoted comes from writing partners Dan Callahan and Adam Ellison (College) and centers on two tire salesmen (Astin, Vartan) who enjoy playing cruel pranks on their co-worker (Cross). Written by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub With the Cannes Film Festival set to begin in just two days, Collider has been given something to premiere before anyone can see it at the festival. As some of you already know, one of my partners is producer Warren Zide. He’s made a few films you might have heard of like the “American Pie” movies, and the first three “Final Destination’s”. Anyway, he’s recently produced a new comedy called “Demoted” and it stars David Cross, Michael Vartan and Sean Astin. To help sell the film around the world, a short promo clip has been put together and they’re going to show it at Cannes. However, we’ve been given permission to premiere it here on Collider first. Since Warren is a partner on the site, I’m not going to give my thoughts on the footage as that would destroy

Earmuff your horses. Cloris Leachman is checking into the hospital at the heart of HawthoRNe, TNT's new medical drama premiering Tuesday, June 16, and starring Jada Pinkett Smith and Michael Vartan. Apparently still enjoying some heat from her recent Dancing with the Stars run, Leachman will play Mrs. Lachman (heh), a cantankerous patient who terrorizes the nurses — Pinkett Smith's Chief Nurse Christina Hawthorne included — by, for example, throwing perfectly good Jell-o at them.

Years after battling it out for Michael Vartan's devotion in Monster-in-Law, Jennifer Lopez and Jane Fonda find themselves on the same side of a contentious coin. A North Carolina woman has filed a lawsuit in federal court accusing the leading ladies—and a whole bunch of others who worked on the 2005 comedy—of pilfering the plot from a screenplay she wrote based on her own experiences with a monstrous mother-in-law. Sheri Gilbert, a self-proclaimed aspiring screenwriter, doesn't detail just how Lopez, Fonda, director Robert Luketic, Warner Bros. Entertainment, New Line Productions and 28 other defendants got their hands on the script she penned in 1998. But she believes she is entitled...
