Paul Shaffer on David Letterman's extortion scandal: "(silence)"

7 October 2009 5:02 PM, PDT | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

One notably close figurehead in David Letterman-gate seems to have gone overlooked, a shiny bald one.

Letterman's longtime sidekick and band leader Paul Shaffer has just released a new memoir called We'll Be Here the Rest of Our Lives about his rise to late night music infamy. He talked more than a few ears off about his own life in music, but he's kept very hush-hush on the whole Letterman brewhaha.

"You know, I just can't talk about it," Shaffer told a Time reporter in a recent interview. "There is a legal proceeding going on. I've been advised that I can't comment on that stuff."

He couldn't even tell Harry Smith on CBS' Early Show on his own network just what the mood is like around Late Show central. However, the rest of both interviews offer a very interesting peak into a life in music that has spanned just »

14 September 2009 1:00 PM, PDT | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

Harry Smith wasn't on The CBS Early Show this morning. Well, he was, but via webcam from his house. Why? He may have H1N1! But he got to appear on the show and wear a comfy t-shirt!

By the way, H1N1 & Harry is a new show this fall on CBS.

Meryl Streep needs to do an action movie: Poll!

5 August 2009 12:00 PM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

This morning, the always delightful Meryl Streep stopped by CBS' Early Show to chat with PopWatch fave Harry Smith about Julie & Julia. Near the end of the interview, they talked about Meryl's new status as a summer blockbuster star. "I know, go figure. It's so... alarming," she said, with that laugh that is utterly joyous yet entirely elegant. "What's happening to the world?" After she explained that it's a bizarre, but happy surprise, Harry gave her a scenario: "Listen, they're gonna ask you to do a movie about something very serious, and they'll just say, 'But it just has to have one car crash or one helicopter thing.' That's how it starts. Don't be afraid." "I don't think they're gonna get me in the catsuit anytime soon," she said. "Although... I'd pay to avoid that movie." Obviously, a 15-time Oscar nominee doesn't need my career advice, but I would »

Icff Preview: Freaky Design Videos

14 May 2009 7:30 AM, PDT | Fast Company | See recent Fast Company news »

Is Blu Dot the David Lynch of the furniture world?

The Web site for the Icff, the furniture fair opening Saturday, contains an obscure nook where designers can post videos. For the most part you'll find the kind of boring, self-promotional stuff you might imagine: a glassblowing demonstration, Harry Smith of CBS testing out chairs, etc. But it also contains two seriously odd videos--strange to the point of disturbing--produced by Blu Dot, a Minneapolis firm known for sensible modern furnishings.

A man dressed as a squirrel assembles a flat-pack chair to electro-pop.

Eric, a jaunty doll with a cockney accent, impresses his Voldemort-like design professor by releasing a pack of silver monkeys.

Bruckheimer’s Lone Ranger May Have A Director

2 May 2009 9:15 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels as The Lone Ranger and Tonto

I remember watching The Lone Ranger on TV, the classic show that was adapted from George W. Trendle’s classic old-time radio show. I still listen to the replays of the old 1930’s radio show today on Sirius Satellite Radio.

“A fiery horse with the speed of light, a cloud of dust, and a hearty ‘Hi-yo, Silver!’, The Lone Ranger!“

Oh yea. Those are good memories. Listening to the radio show has its own merits. If you’re a regular long time reader of Screen Rant, then you also know that there are efforts afoot to get a modern day version of The Lone Ranger on the silver screen.

In February of 2008, we told you about Jerry Bruckheimer looking to redo The Lone Ranger. Like we said then, with a Disney backed Bruckheimer behind the lens, The Lone Ranger »

Director Mike Newell to bring The Lone Ranger to big screen

1 May 2009 5:05 AM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Director Mike Newell is in talks to helm Walt Disney Pictures' big screen version of The Lone Ranger, with Johnny Depp to play the hero's companion Tonto, according to trade magazine Production Weekly.

In the story, a group of Texas Rangers are ambushed as they hunt down a gang of outlaws led by Butch Cavendish. The solo survivor of the attack is found and nursed back to health by an American Indian named Tonto.

The Ranger, donning a mask and riding a white stallion named Silver, teams up with Tonto to bring the gang and other outlaws to justice.

The character is well-known from long-running TV and radio shows, notably the 1949-1957 series starring Clayton Moore (and later John Hart) as The Lone Ranger and Jay Silverheels as Tonto.

The new movie is due out in 2010. No casting for the lead role has yet been announced - earlier rumours that »

'Prince of Persia' Director Up For 'Lone Ranger'

1 May 2009 12:54 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

If it stands up, there's a lot of sense in hiring Mike Newell to direct The Lone Ranger. He's directed a Harry Potter movie and recently shot next summer's Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time for Jerry Bruckheimer, and Bruckheimer is also leading the charge for Lone Ranger. In short, he's got experience as a do-what-the-producer-wants filmmaker on massive movies.

That's not to say he's in any way deficient as a director, just that he works very well for producers with big aims. That's not an easy trait to find, because directors so often want to do things their own ways. Newell's also really versatile - Donnie Brasco, Four Weddings and a Funeral - so I think he can be relied upon to give us the most crowd-pleasing Lone Ranger that the script allows.

Production Weekly (via Worst Previews) broke the news, saying Newell is in talks for »

They've Got the Neutron Bomb: Bob Dylan, John Coltrane, Leonard Cohen and Harry Smith as the Four Horsemen

In their new book Apocalypse Jukebox: The End of the World in American Popular Music, David Janssen and Edward Whitelock, two English profs at tiny Gordon College in Barnesville, Ga., document the soundtrack to the end of the world. After examining the musical fixations of cult leaders Charles Manson and David Koresh, Janssen and Whitelock devote chapters to “the four horsemen of the apocalypse”: Bob Dylan, John Coltrane, Leonard Cohen and Harry Smith. Here's a breakdown of their arguments for each artist as an apocalyptic figure. »

The Joy of American Avant-Garde

7 April 2009 8:13 AM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Movieheads who like to consider themselves as alternative still often shrink from the demands and new thinking required of even the oldest and most conventional "avant-garde" film, a situation that the ubiquity of the DVD format hasn't done very much to mitigate. So be it: the hardy envelope-pushers in the crowd have enjoyed unforeseen access to the quasi-genre's history by now (the DVD menu format is a peerless mode of presentation for motley underground shorts, to be surpassed only, I suppose, once quality streaming-tube clips can be curated and thrown onto our mega TVs instead of our laptops). If you count Image's "Unseen Cinema" mega omnibus and Facets' "The Lawrence Jordan Album" among your prized media possessions as I do, then the good work of the National Film Preservation Foundation will already be on your radar: their robust, elaborately documented orphan-film collections (newsreels, shorts, home movies, etc.) have often featured avant-gardisms, »
