Kind of a quiet week for DVD releases, with only a couple of sci-fi actioners and a horror flick (or was that a horror comedy?) new on the shelves today. Picture M. Night Shyamalan directing National Treasure, and that's about what you get. Transformers 2: Revenge of The Fallen and Ice Age 3-D: Dawn of the Dinosaurs fought it out over the weekend to see who would get the top spot. The fight was so close that it’ll take final numbers on Monday to see who the box office champion is. Both films should bank about $43 million over the July 4th weekend. Tranformers 2’s total currently stands at just under $300 million. Public Enemies should bank about $25 million from Friday to Monday giving the Johnny Depp starrer a pretty decent $40 million over five days. The Michael Mann film appears to have

Sony has switched up its 2010 slate. Now, "The Green Hornet" starring Seth Rogen and Stephen Chow is set for release on July 9, 2010. It was scheduled for release on June 25.
Meanwhile, to imitate Warner's success with "The Hangover," Sony is releasing its buddy comedy starring Adam Sandler called "Grown Ups" in the summertime. Initially slated for a March opening, "Grown Ups" is now set to open in the middle of summer, much like "The Hangover."
But there are other interesting films set to open during the June-July window next year. Some of them are:
"Twilight Saga: The Eclipse" -- June 30
"The Last Airbender" -- July 2
"Despicable Me" -- July 9
"Predators" -- July 9
It will be an interesting time at the box-office. No one can doubt the power of a "Twilight" movie, and M. Night Shyamalan's "The Last Airbender" is getting major buzz. Meanwhile, we have to wait and see for

The planned trilogy of "The Last Airbender" won't be filmed back-to-back and may take as long as six years to complete. Speaking up about the matter was producer Frank Marshall who told Starlog that the filmmakers will be working on the trilogy project one by one. "We're shooting them one at a time, because they're being written one at a time," insisted the five-time Academy Award-nominated producer.
Ruling out the possibility for the three parts of "Airbender" shot like Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings", Marshall noted that director/scribe M. Night Shyamalan is currently in the process of developing the second film. "Night is now working on the script for the second movie, but he hasn't had time to write the second or third ones," he explained. "He's looking at the arc of all three."
"One of the things we'll be doing is using the sets, ships

Exactly one year from today, M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender will hit theaters. Today, however, we've got a rundown for you covering all-things-Airbender -- everything we know up until this point about Shyamalan's feature film adaptation of the hugely popular, critically lauded, award winning Nickelodeon series Avatar: The Last Airbender. Here's what you need to know: Avatar aired from February of 2005 to July of 2008 and spanned three seasons. While on air, the series won 2 Pulcinella Awards, 5 Annie Awards, 1 Emmy, a Nickelodeon Kid's Choice Award, and a Peabody. So, to say the least, it's kind of a big deal. Created by Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko, Avatar: The Last Airbender tells the story of Aang, a twelve-year-old who, with the help of his new friends Sokka and Katara, must save the world by defeating the Fire Lord and ending the destructive, worldwide war with the ...

Last Airbender producer Frank Marshall recently confirmed that the trilogy of films will not be filmed back-to-back (Lord of the Rings style), but will instead be shot one at a time. M. Night Shyamalan is still working on the script for the second film, while also sketching out the trilogy's greater mythology. Marshall notes that they still plan to take advantage of the sets and other elements from the first film in the sequels: One of the things we’ll be doing is using the sets, ships and elements for each different nation in this film and incorporating them into movies two and three. We’re not waiting. There just isn’t enough time. Night will finish this movie, then the script and then we’ll prepare for the next one. I think it’ll probably happen over six years. He also confirmed on Twitter that fan-favorite animal characters Appa (a flying bison,

NBA teams (and some fans) may already be looking forward to the 2010 free agent class that will be battling for dollars a year from now, but the July 4 weekend also a year from now has become one of the more intriguing box office battles in quite awhile.Summit Entertainment's "Twilight Saga: Eclipse" has June 30 staked out and the M. Though there's nearly a year left before the film's release, and the dirt hasn't even been shifted on production for the film yet, and The Twilight Saga: New Moon hasn't even hit theatres, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (starring Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and Taylor Lautner, and directed by David Slade) is already being recognized as a source of 'formidable competition' for 2010's summer film schedule. A recent Variety article highlighted an up-coming Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Kevin James, Rob Schneider, and David Spade film entitled Grown Ups, which is set for release on June 25, 2010. In the article, Variety states that "[f]ormidable competition should come with the opening five days later on June 30 of Summit's 'Twilight: The Eclipse.' Paramount's 'The Last Airbender,' from M. If it's not trailers, it's teasers; if it's not teasers; it's images. By the time a blockbuster finally arrives, if you haven't heard so much about it that you want to scream -- from overload or delight -- the studio's marketing team hasn't done their job. But how early is too early to begin promoting a movie?
Pointing to this week's release of a teaser trailer for M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender, more than a year in advance of its planned theatrical roll-out in July 2010, The Big Money wonders if that's a good strategy: "How do you keep interest high then over the long autumn, winter, and spring? By producing trailer after trailer? Hollywood will watch this strategy closely to see at what point trailer fatigue sets in or whether it needs to build interest even earlier in its expensive summer blockbusters." Of course, as io9 observed, this
