Box Office: Who is the Half-Blood Prince?

15 July 2009 6:02 PM, PDT | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

Bruno topped the box office this past weekend, ending the Transformers two-week reign while pushing the giant robots all the way down to third place. America was not feeling the love for Beth Cooper which debuted in seventh. Here's the top five:

1. Bruno: $30.6 million

2. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs: $27.6 million

3. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen: $24.2 million

4. Public Enemies: $13.7 million

5. The Proposal: $10.6 million

Just one new release this week and it's rolling out on Wednesday.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

What's It All About: The adaptation of the sixth and penultimate novel in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. The threat of Voldemort's return and raging teenage hormones make for an interesting year at Hogwarts.

Why It Might Do Well: Apparently the first trick they teach the kids at Hogwarts is how to conjure up currency as the series has proven to be a license to print money.

Darkness Rising

15 July 2009 2:58 PM, PDT | From ifc.com | See recent IFC news

From Bambi's mother's death to the destruction of Alderaan, every modern generation is cursed and blessed with its very own big-screen traumas. "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," the sixth film in the series based on J.K. Rowling's fantasy novels, contains a doozy; that millions of readers know it's coming won't dim its power in the least. Screenwriter Steve Kloves, director David Yates and the familiar, still-sturdy cast play the grim moment and its aftermath for incredulous shock rather than raw sentiment, knowing viewers will supply the latter in spades.

As devotees know, this entry finds Hogwarts in a funk, its faculty and students still reeling from the death of Harry's godfather and the "I am your father, Luke"-level revelation that the hero is, in fact, The Chosen One. Headmaster Dumbledore (Michael Gambon) interrupts Harry's holiday-among-the-common folks (even wand-blocking his flirtation with a star-struck coffee shop waitress) to

Teaser Trailer for Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief

15 July 2009 2:18 PM, PDT | From newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news

When Fox started assembling their all-star cast for Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief, I asked along with Entertainment Weekly if this could be the next Harry Potter.  Already the studio is doing what they can to align themselves with the multi-billion dollar franchise since the teaser trailer is playing in front of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. The novel adaptation also borrows the director who kicked off the J.K. Rowling series, Chris Columbus, after Warner...

Review: “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince”

15 July 2009 1:15 PM, PDT | From screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news

Seen on: July 15, 2009

The players: Director: David Yates, Writer: Steve Kloves, Cast: Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Michael Gambon, Helena Bonham Carter

Facts of interest: David Yates is also directing the two "Deathly Hallows" parts.

The plot: It's his sixth year at Hogwarts, and Harry Potter explores the past of Voldemort as dark forces descend upon Hogwarts.

Our thoughts: The world’s most famous wizard returns to the big screen for a sixth time in David Yates’ “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” a splendidly executed family adventure and yet another superb addition to an already marvelous series based on the novels by J.K. Rowling. You know what? I’m just going to say it right now: as far as I’m concerned, this is the best Potter yet!

The Vatican Praises 'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince'

15 July 2009 12:02 PM, PDT | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

My, how times can change. In 2005, the Pope (then Cardinal) condemned J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter, noting the "subtle seductions" that could hurt children. In 2008, the Vatican's official newspaper published another blow at the series, one that said Potter is "the wrong kind of hero."

But now in 2009, we've got Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and Guardian reports that it's gotten the Vatican seal of approval via that same paper. What's changed? Well, the latest article states that teenage romance is shown with the "correct balance," and praises the film for the clear message that good must overcome evil, "and that sometimes this requires costs and sacrifice." Color me confused -- I never realized that the line between good and evil was so blurred before!

The fact that the entire movie pretty much revolves around the kids' hormones makes the news quite amusing. I wonder how many kids will

Mid-Week Movie News Wrap Up - July 15, 2009

15 July 2009 10:59 AM, PDT | From ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news

It’s officially mid-week and here’s what’s going on:

Harry Potter waves his wand at midnight and conjures box office records; the Heathers may be gone for good; Cox and Arquette are Screaming again; Robin Hood has its King Richard; The Limey may get a sequel; it’s a wrap for Nightmare on Elm Street; The Crow will fly again for the first time; Warner Bros. may be returning to the Major League; and The Toronto Film Festival has a list of flicks that could become next year’s greats.

Let’s get to it:

.

1. Variety is reporting that Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince conjured up a whopping $20 million in box office receipts from midnight showings alone. If this figure holds, it would make the sixth installment of J.K. Rowling’s wizard adventure the highest-grossing midnight debut of all time. Previous record holders were The Dark Knight

From 'Deathly Hallows' To 'Sorcerer's Stone,' These Are Your 'Harry Potter' Directors

15 July 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | From MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news

It’s been eight years since the first "Harry Potter" film hit the big screen, and in that time the franchise has gone through half as many directors. With Chris Columbus, Alfonso Cuarón, Mike Newell and now David Yates putting their skills to work on bringing J.K. Rowling's works to life, the various novels have been interpreted in a variety of ways.

“Sorcerer’s Stone” and “Chamber of Secrets” director Chris Columbus had the tough job of being the first to adapt the biggest children’s novel series of all time. He was further challenged with having to commit those books to film before Harry Potter’s story had even been finished; only the first four novels had been released when “Sorcerer’s Stone” and “Chamber of Secrets” hit theaters.

Columbus has often been criticized as creating too-literal adaptations of the novels, thus sucking all the magic out of the stories.

Review: ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’

15 July 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | From The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news

Back in 2001, legendary director of “family friendly” films Chris Columbus teamed up with Warner Bros. to bring the works of J.K. Rowling to the silver screen with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. They managed to do so with such amazing prestige and results that the rest of the films were sure to follow in line. This trend stayed true for a few more years with Chamber of Secrets and Prisoner of Azkaban. The movies were getting better and darker as the titular character grew older. Sadly, with the latest installment, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the only thing the audience gets this time is awkward emotions and a sense of loss.

With The Half-Blood Prince, which is based on the sixth book in the Harry Potter series, the viewer is treated differently. Rather than open their minds to a secret world of magic and wizardry, they are

From MTV.Com: It's kind of amazing to look back over J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" book series.

The first book, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," arrived in the United States at the end of 1998. Three years later, director Chris Columbus' movie adaptation hit theaters. Perhaps more than anything else, fans delighted in seeing their favorite characters from the book series — then on its fourth entry, "Goblet of Fire" — brought to life by a group of perfectly cast actors, led by Daniel Radcliffe's Harry.

'Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince' Brings Home The Magic… Again!

MTV intern Sandra Segura is a real warrior. She braved the crowds a few weeks back to bring you all an firsthand account of her experience in line at a midnight screening of the summer hit, "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen." Since she's had plenty of time to catch up on her sleep, we sent her out again last night to check out "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince." This time, she even captured some video. We'll be posting that a bit later on today, but for now read on to check out her impressions of the movie and the experience leading up to it.

Pic Post! "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" premiere

Every new Potter film brings comments of, "my how Harry, Hermione and Ron have grown!" "Can you believe, they're practically adults now?" And so forth. But we've gotten so far down the road in this franchise that it may actually be time to start speculating on whether Rupert Grint has had hair plugs, or if Emma Watson overdid it with the botox.

What, too soon?

Anyhoo, the hotly anticipated (and well-reviewed) latest installment of the Harry Potter franchise opens in the United States today, and in honor of that we thought we'd post some great photos of the uber gay-friendly Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson et. al. from last week's star-studded London premiere.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Takes in $22.2 Million from Midnight Shows!

15 July 2009 7:53 AM, PDT | From MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news

It seems that the latest Hogwarts adventure is off to a record-breaking start. According to Variety, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince took in an estimated $22.2 million from midnight screenings.

The mark would be more than enough to break The Dark Knight's $18 million midnight screening record set last summer as well as Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith's $17 million midnight tally.

While the Potter films have always been box-office juggernauts, analysts believe that Potter is more popular than ever lately, which some attribute to J.K. Rowling's last book in the series coming out, and some attribute to the two-year gap between films. The last film, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which also opened on a mid-July Wednesday, took in $12 million from midnight shows en route to a $139.7 million five-day gross.

It seems that more record-breaking numbers could be in store for

'Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince': Snogwarts, By Kurt Loder

The great series hits a speed bump.

Daniel Radcliffe in "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince"

Photo: Warner Bros.

"Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" is one of the darkest of the Potter books, so it's no surprise that the movie version is the darkest of the films to date. What is surprising — and I say this as someone who loves the books and has loved the movies up to this point — is how sluggish the new picture is. It gets underway with a limp scene set in a train-station café — a trivial flirtation between Harry, now 16, and an admiring waitress — and proceeds in surges and sags for the next two and a half hours. There are some marvelous scenes, beautiful images, wonderful moments — it isn't a "bad" movie by any reckoning. But it isn't up to the sweeping dynamic level of some of the pictures that preceded it.

Movie Review: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Jul 15, 2009 Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is the sixth in the series of films based on J.K. Rowling’s epic novels, and it’s the first to offer a glimpse of light at the end of the tunnel. Though Harry’s destiny has been clear from the start, his triumphs in past movies have always been rewarded with a seemingly equal number of new hurdles. For those who haven’t been reading the books and don’t know what lies ahead (a group that includes myself), that episodic tone has, at times, tested a filmgoer’s endurance. Yates Promises Potter Fans They 'Haven't Seen Anything Yet'

15 July 2009 1:01 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince director David Yates is ecstatic about the rave reviews of the latest wizard installment has garnered - but insists fans haven't "seen anything yet".

The latest part of the hugely successful franchise has become one of the most highly-anticipated movies of 2009, after it was pushed back from its original release date of last November.

And early reviews for the movie suggest the sixth film is the best Potter film so far, with trade magazine Variety predicting the movie will become one of the year's top three earners.

But Brit filmmaker Yates is adamant his next two films, the two-part adaptation of author J.K. Rowling's final book, will really get devotees excited.

He says, "People are being very kind about what they're seeing in Half-Blood Prince and I just think you haven't seen anything yet.

"(Part one) is like a road movie, refugees being chased by all these people who want to kill them. It's quite intense. Then the final film is like this big opera, big epic, it's got more set pieces than any of the others."

And he reveals that the crew has an expert on hand to offer suggestions - J.K. Rowling herself.

He adds, "She's really gracious, she's not territorial. She kind of recognises the challenges of adapting (a book for a film) and she's really sympathetic to that.

"She said now that the shooting part is coming to an end she might just pop in more often, which we would love. She was so busy with all the other books she couldn't (visit much more than once a year)."

Review: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

14 July 2009 8:03 PM, PDT | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

It's a tricky situation -- Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is a strong entry in the series about the boy wizard, but won't work as a stand-alone film. No background is provided, so audience members must have seen the previous movies or read the J.K. Rowling books or they'll be lost. Fortunately, the movie doesn't assume you've read the sixth book -- there are no gaps in the story that require the novel to fill.

In case you haven't read the book, Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) returns to Hogwarts in Half-Blood Prince for his sixth year of study, while Death Eaters terrorize both the magical community and the ordinary Muggle world. Dumbledore (Michael Gambon) trusts Harry with increasingly important tasks in the fight against Voldemort ... and Harry is also learning a lot from an old Potions textbook that contains clever notes from someone self-styled the "Half-Blood Prince." Review: “Half-Blood Prince” is the Best “Harry Potter” Movie So Far

14 July 2009 3:45 PM, PDT | From AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news

You have to give the creators of the Harry Potter movies credit: they learn from their mistakes.

The Harry Potter movie franchise has been notoriously hit-and-miss, from the sublime (Prisoner of Azkaban) to the disappointing (Philosopher’s Stone and Goblet of Fire).

I can only imagine the pressure these filmmakers are under: legions of adoring book fans often want to see the on-screen story exactly as they’ve read it on the page.

But with Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the sixth movie in the series, the producers have realized that it’s far more important to have a coherent, engaging movie than it is to be entirely faithful to the books.

That being the case, the movie takes some major liberties with the book, and makes some major edits.

The result is the best Harry Potter movie so far, by far. And for the record, it completely captures
