Maude: Angela Lansbury Hosting Tribute to Friend Bea Arthur

3 September 2009 6:03 AM, PDT | TVSeriesFinale.com | See recent TVSeriesFinale news »

While theatre-goers knew Bea Arthur for her work in Mame, Fiddler on the Rood, and Bea Arthur on Broadway, those of us who love television will always remember the actress for her roles on shows like All in the Family, Maude, and The Golden Girls.

Among those either performing or offering remembrances will be Norman Lear (creator of All in the Family and Maude), Adrienne Barbeau (Maude), Rue McClanahan (The Golden Girls), Zoe Caldwell, Chita Rivera, and Billy Goldenberg, Arthur's longtime accompanist.

'Gang Rape' Scene Scrapped From Broadway Show

24 August 2009 12:11 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

A scene has been scrapped from the remake of Broadway musical Bye Bye Birdie over producers' fears it was "gang rape-y".

Gina Gershon, who stars as Rose in the upcoming revival, reveals her bosses at the Roundabout Theater Company have axed a dance sequence that has featured in the show since its debut in 1960.

The original scene shows Gershon's character, made famous on the stage by Chita Rivera and in film by Janet Leigh, crashing a Shriners' banquet and flirting underneath a table with a group of men wearing Fez hats.

She tells the New York Daily News, "It seemed a little too gang rape-y."

Gershon is set to take the stage opposite E.R. star John Stamos when the show debuts in New York next month. »

"West Side Story" holds a few Tony Awards I.O.U.s. Back in 1958, it lost best musical to "The Music Man" and the spitfire role of Anita, played by Chita Rivera, wasn't even nominated! The Oscars got it right three years later, voting "West Side Story" best picture and giving Rita Moreno the Academy Award for best supporting actress for that part. Now there's a bold new staging on Broadway that's nominated for best revival with Anita played by Karen Olivo (Tony nominee, best featured actress), who recently originated the part of Vanessa in "In the Heights," which won best musical at the Tonys last year.  Related Videos Three 'Billy Elliot' boys pass our two Tonys quizzes Talking Tonys: '9 to 5' star Allison Janney Talking Tonys: 'Shrek' star Sutton Foster Jane Fonda dishes Tonys, '33 Variations,' Oscars, Katharine Hepburn, her dad and a lost cigarette lighter Get Gold Derby on Twitter. »

Broadway Backwards 4 brings the gay!

10 February 2009 5:57 PM, PST | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

The fourth annual “Broadway Backwards” concert benefiting New York’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Community Center raised the roof of the American Airlines theater on Monday, February 9. No surprise that the audience was packed; with such performers and presenters as Whoopi Goldberg, Mario Cantone, Alan Cumming, Cheyenne Jackson, Christopher Sieber, John Tartaglia, Michael Urie, and beloved Florence Henderson on hand, the show – in which well-known songs from Broadway musicals are presented in a new, gayer context – was really something else. Here are pics of this very special, one-night-only performance.

****************

Alan Cumming and the male ensemble got the show going with the production number “Rainbow High,” from Evita.

Comedy legend Anne Meara kvelled as Kirsten Wyatt joyously sang “I Met a Girl” from Bells are Ringing, backed by the full company.

Whoopi Goldberg and company offered an all-female version of “Gee, Officer Krupke” from West Side Story.

Rosie's Kids provided the entertainment at the event, which drew such starry guest as Chita Rivera, Linda Dano and Broadway couple Orfeh and Andy Karl. One of many highlights was the 'Kids' performing Arthur Schwartz's classic tune "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"-but they changed the words to "Long Island" for Rosie, which the crowd just loved. The Maravel Arts Center is named for O'Donnell's teacher, Pat Maravel, who she said was an "inspirational force" in her formative years. »
