Reese Witherspoon as a Bad 'Pharm Girl'?

Drugs could make a good girl go bad. Reese Witherspoon, who rose to stardom as a good girl in bubbly comedies Legally Blonde and Sweet Home Alabama before winning an Oscar for the dramatic Walk the Line, will star in and produce Pharm Girl for Universal Pictures. Here's the "bad" part: Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, responsible for I Love You Philip Morris but best known for writing the acerbic Bad Santa, "are writing the screenplay and in talks to direct," according to The Hollywood Reporter.

It's hard to believe it's been 18 years since Reese debuted as a spunky young teen in Robert Mulligan's evocative The Man in the Moon. In the decade before Legally Blonde, she gave a scorching performance as an incredibly foul-mouthed, rebellious teen in Matthew Bright's super-dark Freeway (which had a biting comic edge), and eventually won wide acclaim in Alexander Payne's superb Election. »

Note: Due to the economy, 3-D has been dropped and will be replaced by Smell-o-vision — check for your scratch and sniff cards in about 4-6 weeks.) Best Sound went to rage-zombie veterans Ian Tapp and Richard Pryke, leaving Mark Weingarten who worked on Rejuvenatrix in the dust. The Sound Editing section contains one too many references to Ron Silver, and at least two references to a Roger Corman film.

9:06 p.m. — As with all of the past seven Oscars held at the Kodak Theater, the Governors Ball takes place in the adjoining Grand Ballroom which is 25,090 square feet. The menu for the Governors Ball was created by Wolfgang Puck for the fifteenth consecutive year. He promises the return of old favorites like tuna tartare in sesame miso cones and Maine lobster as well as, of course, caviar. And pastry chef Sherry Yard will once more be creating her gold-dusted chocolate Oscars as consolation prizes for those who didn’t get one of the real ones. Music will be spun by Kcrw radio host Jason Bentley who will alternate with The Impulse »

Collections ~ It's Tuesday so there are new box sets available highlighting everything from tired hockey masked killers (you know who) to highly respected thespians (Peter Sellers and Alec Guiness) but the big ... make that B-i-g... deal for The Film Experience is the "Natalie Wood Collection" which includes six films. I haven't seen Bombers B-52 or Cash McCall but even if they're bad you still get to stare at her for two hours. Her beauty justifies most any running time.

The other four are more notable players in her filmography. There's the Edith Head costumed Helen Gurley Brown comedy Sex and the Single Girl (1964) and two true classics: the musical Gypsy (1962) and the legendary 'Warren Beatty Destroys Lives!' teen angst of the unbeatable Splendor in the Grass (1961).
