He had one son, Valentin Montand, with his second wife, Carole Amiel. His first marriage to Simone Signoret was childless. Another woman accused him of being the father of her daughter, and sued him to obtain a DNA sample. He refused, but that woman persisted after his death. Singer, best known for his performance of jazz hit "Autumn Leaves" among other popular songs.

Had a love affaire with Marilyn Monroe during the filming of Let's Make Love (1960).

The name of "Yves Montand" comes from his childhood: his Italian mother used to yell at him "Ivo, monta" ("come upstairs, Ivo" in Tuscan dialect) when it was time to go home.

His parents escaped from Italy in 1921, after Mussolini formed the fascist party.

Montand's father, Giovanni Livi, was a locally important figure in the French Communist Party in Marseilles when Montand was in his teens. Montand himself later joined the Communist Party and remained a member until 1968, when he broke with the Party in response to the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia.

Admired Fred Astaire.

Like his wife Simone Signoret, he is buried in the Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.

Became natural citizen of France in 1932.

Father of Valentin Montand.

Toured as a jazz singer in the Soviet Union in 1956 and in 1963, and met with Nikita Khrushchev. Became critical of the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968, then made a movie about socialist dictatorship.
