Melina Merkouri apart from her appearences at the cinema, she also made remarkable performances on stage. In 1948 she played Blanche du Bois in Tenesse Williams "A streetcar named desire" at Karolos Koun Art Theatre.

She was the first actress to play Alexandra del Lago in (1960) T.Williams "Sweet bird of Youth" in Greece. Her partner as Chance Wayne was the Greek actor, Yannis Fertis. The performance took place in Karolos Koun Art Theatre once more. She repeated the role with Yannis Fertis.

Her last appearance on (1980) stage was in the summer of 1980 at the ancient theatre of Epidaurus in Greece as Klytaemnistra in Aescylus "Orestia". The play was once more directed by Karolos Koun and performed by his Art Theatre.In 1976 she played Euripides "Medea" with Dimitri Papamichael as Jason.
