As a newspaper columnist for the New York Evening Sun, Marquis created the characters of Archy, a cockroach and poet who couldn't manipulate a typewriter's shift key and his best friend, a cat named Mehitable. The "archy stories" have been collected and published in a number of volumes, including "archy and mehitabel" (1927), "archys life of mehitabel" (1933), "archy does his part" (1935), "the lives and times of archy and mehitabel" (1940), "archyology" (1996), and "archyology ii" (1998) and "The Annotated Archy and Mehitabel" (2006).
