Blu-Ray Review: Michael Mann’s ‘Heat’ a Modern Masterpiece

11 November 2009 1:23 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Michael Mann might first seem the ideal fit for Blu-Ray. He’s a notorious perfectionist, apparent in every frame of his remarkable output of films that includes such great modern classics as “Manhunter,” “The Insider,” “Collateral,” and “Public Enemies”. But one of Mann’s best films, “Heat,” recently released on Blu-Ray, is an interesting example of a director who has a vision that shouldn’t necessarily be overly polished by the HD format. The film looks like Mann wants it - gritty, dark, and like, well, actual film. It’s a release that some buyers may think doesn’t look “HD enough,” but to this Mann aficionado thinks that it looks just right.

Blu-Ray Rating: 4.5/5.0

As for the film itself, it’s one of the rare ’90s films that gets better every time I see it. It’s a battle of wills between two of the most legendary actors »

Heat and Logan’s Run Blu-ray Reviews

10 November 2009 10:26 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Catalog titles Ftw. I am one of those rare people who enjoy being “double dipped.” I like upgrading to Blu-ray if I love a film, because you only get to watch a movie for the first time once, and so a different and better transfer is a reason (at least for me) to get excited about a film you’ve seen a number of times. When I would go see something in the theater on multiple occasions, I’d often go to different theaters (or failing that, different seats). My reviews of the Blu-rays of Heat and Logan’s Run after the jump.

Heat is one of the great American films. It took me a while to come to that, and I still think that Michael Mann’s finest film is The Insider, but there’s no denying Heat. Robert De Niro stars as Neal McCauley, a high line criminal who knows how to rob. »

[TV] Justice League: The Complete Series

6 November 2009 8:30 AM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Before I start gushing about just how great this cartoon and, by connection, this set are, let’s establish two things. First, for every good thing I have to say about the entire set I include a single footnote: this should be available in a Blu-ray release as well, the animation would be sharper and bolder, the audio would be stunning and the entire package would have had that much more relevance considering the current trends of digital media. Second, this is so much more than just a ‘cartoon’. As is said a few times in the extra features of the series, Justice League may be the greatest superhero animated series to have ever existed. So what does that imply about this complete series set? One of the best ever?

Fall Frights: The Hills Have Eyes (2006; Film Review)

20 October 2009 12:28 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

In the spirit of Halloween '09, we're breaking out reviews (some new, some old) of some Fall Frights you may want to work into your monthly viewing.

Originally published, 03/03/2006

Say this for the recent trend toward remaking horror favorites from the ’70s: It’s likely that projects as unremittingly grisly and brutal as the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Dawn Of The Dead and now The Hills Have Eyes might have had a lot more trouble getting in the studio doors were they not based on recognizable known quantities. Whatever one thinks of their overall quality, it has to be acknowledged that the Chainsaw and Dawn reduxes made honorable attempts to recapture the intensity of their forebears. But the 21st-century Hills is the first of this group to outdo its predecessor, elaborating on Wes Craven’s original in ways that both honor and improve upon it, with genuinely bloodcurdling results.

Fall Frights: Joy Ride (Film Review)

Joy Ride - Fangoria Archives: Originally Published 10/2001

Joy Ride passes one of the tests of a good thriller, which is that when the characters approach a closed room or mysterious package or, in this case, a car trunk within which a surprise is waiting, it's not easy to predict what the surprise will be. In this case, college student Lewis (Paul Walker), his ne'er-do-well brother Fuller (Steve Zahn) and Venna (Leelee Sobieski), a girl Lewis is sweet on, have been directed by a psychopath who's been stalking them to pull over and open the trunk of their car. What's inside won't be revealed here, but it's a nice twist that's both logical and provides a quiet little chill.

Both of those qualities inform the whole of Joy Ride, »

The Hannibal Lecter Collection (Blu-ray Review)

26 September 2009 11:30 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

“It rubs the lotion on its skin.” “Now it places the lotion in the basket.” Anyway, enough of my usual at home internet surfing activities. I’ve got a review to write damn it, and write one I shall.

Freshly hitting store shelves and web retailers nationwide is MGM’s latest Hannibal Lecter Collection, now on Blu-ray, just in time for the Halloween and holiday season. Like the previous DVD collection of the same heading, this new collection features Manhunter (the first Thomas Harris adaptation featuring the now notorious Hannibal Lecter, then portrayed rather effectively by Brian Cox), Silence Of The Lambs (ushering the ever talented Sir Anthony Hopkins into the maniacal role of Lecter), and Hannibal now with picture and sound so stunningly clear you can almost smell Clarice Starling’s Evian skin cream and L'Air du Temps perfume.

While I’d like to tell you that this collection »

Blu-Ray Round Up: MGM Releases Wave of Modern Horror Classics

22 September 2009 6:16 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Start planning your Halloween marathon now. Last week, we highlighted the Universal wave of titles that included greats like “Shaun of the Dead” and “Army of Darkness” and we’re back with another wave of modern horror classics, including Oscar winners “Silence of the Lambs” and “Misery”.

The Blu-Ray Round-Up, HollywoodChicago.com’s regular column that highlights synopsis, tech details, and special features for titles that might otherwise fall through your Blu-Ray buying cracks, doesn’t usually play favorites, but every good horror fan should have “Manhunter,” “Silence,” “Child’s Play,” and “Misery” in their collection. Whether or not you need to own the “Wrong Turn” films is something only you can decide.

All five titles were released last week, September 15th, 2009. Both “Child’s Play” and “Misery” are presented in a Bd/DVD combo pack with both HD and standard versions of the film.

Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island Delayed

21 August 2009 3:19 PM, PDT | TheMovingPicture.net | See recent TheMovingPicture news »

Nikki Finke over at Deadline Hollywood is reporting Martin Scorsese’s upcoming Shutter Island has been pushed back from its October 2 release and will now arrive in theaters sometime next February. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Michelle Williams, Patricia Clarkson, Emily Mortimer, Jackie Earle Haley, Elias Koteas, Ted Levine, John Carroll Lynch and Max von Sydow. Based on the novel by Dennis Lehane, the film follows U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels (DiCaprio) who is investigating the disappearance of an escaped inmate from a hospital for the criminally insane on the remote Shutter Island. Finke lists a number of possible reasons for the delay, which include DiCaprio not being available to promote the film overseas and Paramount telling the filmmakers “it doesn't have the financing in 2009 to spend the $50M to $60M necessary to market a big awards”. TV Review: Final Season of ‘Monk’ Opens With Good Episode; ‘Psych’ Also Returns

7 August 2009 1:08 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – For seven years, USA Network’s “Monk” has consistently delivered quality entertainment. It’s never been a show that set out to break the rules or even do anything too interesting within them, but it has rarely faltered at all in its ability to entertain, something that can be said about very few series that have been on this long. Like a great old band going for one final tour, the final season of “Monk” promises to play all the greatest hits and go out on a high note.

TV Rating: 3.5/5.0 You’d have to have lived under a rock for the ’00s or just bought your first TV to be saying “what is this show called ‘Monk’”? The award-winning mystery series has been a beloved part of the basic cable landscape for the better part of the decade and the season premiere of the final arc of the »

DVD Playhouse—July 2009

By

Allen Gardner

Do The Right Thing: 20th Anniversary Edition (Universal) Spike Lee’s groundbreaking fable about race relations in an ethnically mixed Brooklyn neighborhood during a sweltering New York summer remains as potent, timely and prescient as it was in 1989. Lee is among the cast, which also includes John Turturro, Danny Aiello, Samuel L. Jackson, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, and Rosie Perez (to name a few), that provide the tableaux-like framework for this stunning work. Criminally ignored by Oscar (it wasn't even nominated for Best Picture, but did garner nods for Supporting Actor Danny Aiello and Lee’s screenplay), it endures as a timeless classic. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Commentary by Lee, Ernest Dickerson, Wynn Thomas, Joie Lee; Documentary; Deleted and extended scenes; Featurettes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS 5.1 surround.

Beauties and Their Beasts in the Horror Genre

22 June 2009 1:22 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Throughout history there have been tales, legends, what-have-you about beautiful women and their effect on creatures considered unworthy or dangerous or abominations. The “love of a good woman” scenario carried to an extreme as these women do indeed usually fall in love with their hideous “captors”. Many of these stories go way back in oral history: fairy tales such as Beauty and the Beast, several Greek myths - Persephone and the God of the Underworld. But it is in horror films that we see this phenomenon the most. All the way back to Lon Chaney and his Phantom of the Opera – although it could easily be argued that Christine was none too pleased when she de-masked her captor. But there are other horror (horrible?) couples that have endured in the genre:

1. King Kong and his Ann Darrow (Fay Wray in 1933, Naomi Watts in 2005) – King Kong is the film that gave »

Shutter Island Trailer Promises a Straight Up Genre Film from Scorsese

10 June 2009 6:27 PM, PDT | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

Colour me intrigued with Martin Scorsese‘s actor-studded, gothic horror-thriller-mystery Shutter Island.  The trailer popped up on Apple.com today and begs the question:  Where else could the assemblage of Michelle Williams, Max Von Sydow, Leonardo Dicarprio and John Carroll Lynch occur in the same film other than a huge directorial draw like Scorsese? (Oh, did I mention Mark Ruffalo, Jackie Earle Haley, Emily Mortimer, Ted Levine, Elias Koteas, Patricia Clarkson and Ben Kingsley?  Yea, they’re in here too.  It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Asylum!)  The film is genre-y and classy at the same time, and I must say, I am digging it.  A lot.  This is simply handsome craftsmanship.  Come fall we’ll find out if Scorcese has something more than just a spooky story up his sleeve.  But for now, that will do.

The Silence of the Lambs (Blu-ray Review)

1 June 2009 5:13 AM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Main Feature (1H 58M 37S)

I have seen this film quite a few times and each time I am left with a different overall opinion. I am always left feeling impressed with Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter but that I prefer the more openly psychotic portrayal from Brian Cox in Manhunter. Jodie Foster, fresh from her Oscar-winning performance in The Accused, puts in a good performance as the gifted FBI cadet Clarice who finds the strength to overcome her fears. I can’t put my finger on why my opinion on this film has differed so much in the past because watching it again, noticing how each performance fits so well into the picture as a whole, it’s clear to me now that everything is so well balanced. Ted Levine’s performance, as Buffalo Bill, is much ignored in favour of Hopkins and Foster due to a lack of »

First Official Pic from Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island

Here’s your first official pic from Martin Scorsese’s period thriller “Shutter Island”, which features a very unspectacular shot of the director and his two stars, Michelle Williams and Leonardo Dicaprio (he’s a federal marshall, she’s his wife) apparently goofing around on set. Or, er, standing around chatting about what they’re going to eat after the day’s shoot. One of those things, I’m sure. Drama is set in 1954, U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels is investigating the disappearance of a murderess who escaped from a hospital for the criminally insane and is presumed to be hiding on the remote Shutter Island. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Emily Mortimer, Michelle Williams, Max von Sydow, Jackie Earle Haley, Patricia Clarkson, Elias Koteas, Ted Levine, and directed by Martin Scorsese based on the novel by Dennis Lehane. Monk: Sharona (Bitty Schram) Returns for Last Season Episode

26 March 2009 11:49 AM, PDT | TVSeriesFinale.com | See recent TVSeriesFinale news »

USA's Monk may be leaving the air after its eighth season wraps up, but there is a bit of good news in store for longtime fans.

Monk centers on Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub), a brilliant San Francisco detective who has a breakdown following his wife's murder. After a three-year absence, Monk returns to the force to help do what he does best: solve crimes. Of course, for someone suffering from severe Ocd, that's no easy task -- but it's usually Monk's Ocd that ends up helping him solve the case. Series performers also include Jason Gray-Stanford, Ted Levine, Traylor Howard, Stanley Kamel, Bitty Schram, Emmy Clarke, Kane Ritchotte, and Hector Elizondo.

The show premiered in 2002 and was a surprise hit for the USA Network. One of the most endearing aspects of the show was the close relationship between Monk and his practical nurse/assistant, Sharona Flemming (Schram).
