Every Sunday, Film School Rejects presents a film that was made before you were born and tells you why you should like it. This week, Old Ass Movies presents: White Christmas (1954) While walking through a major store the other day, I noticed that all of their Christmas gear had already been broken out, and I felt that that sent a central message to shoppers that Thanksgiving is easily overlooked. The hell with Thanksgiving. Bring on Christmas. I've decided to join in the exclusionary spirit, completely bypassing Thanksgiving (as if my entries seem themed in the first place), and go straight to the source of holiday cheer that is the only holiday that can leave the streets and highways of Los Angeles empty. And what better way than to spotlight White Christmas? I recognize that for some modern audiences, this film will seem completely dated. It's one of those films that was birthed from the stage show, from »

The palatial M&C offices have an air of snow about them and it.s not even Thanksgiving yet. It may have to do with a visit from troubadours Der Bingle, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, and Vera-Ellen. It may be a White Christmas after all and I didn.t even know it was coming. Lord help the sister that comes between man and my man, that didn.t sound right. On Christmas Eve, 1944, Capt. Bob Wallace (Bing Crosby) is entertaining his fellow troops with the help of Pvt. Phil Davis (Danny Kaye). Their beloved commander Maj. Gen. Thomas Waverly (Dean Jagger) arrives for the end of the show and to relinquish command. His men give his a rousing send off that is »

1891 Miriam Cooper silent film star of the Dw Griffith wing of Hollywood (Intolerance, Birth of a Nation)
1903 Dean Jagger Oscar winner for the war drama Twelve O'Clock High. Can't say I've seen that one. Anyone?
1923 Gene Callahan started working in feature films in 1960. He'd won two Oscars for Art Direction (The Hustler and America, America) by April, 1964. Quick study, yes? I imagine he had great stories to tell: his first movie scenery was chewed by none other Liz (BUtterfield 8) and Brando (The Fugitive Kind) and he worked right up until his death, closing a fine career out with those Steel Magnolias and Reese Witherspoon's debut Man in the Moon. If you haven't seen the latter, I recommend. Sweet movie and Reese had full star charisma even at 14.

We have a brand new exclusive special feature clip from the brand new anniversary edition of White Christmas, which will be released on DVD on November 3. Click below to take a look at our exclusive special feature clip, which deals with Bing Crosby taking the time to sing for American soldiers.
White Christmas, Paramount's belated follow-up to the 1942 hit Holiday Inn, was the studio's first VistaVision production. A veritable warehouse full of oldie-but-goodie Irving Berlin tunes are woven into the film's simplistic plotline, along with a handful of new songs, of which &"What Can You Do With a General?" is the least memorable. Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye (replacing an ailing Donald O'Connor) play nightclub entertainers Bob Wallace and Phil Davis, while Rosemary Clooney and VeraEllen are cast as singing-sister act Betty and Judy. The foursome travel to Vermont to visit Bob and Phil's Wii commanding officer, General Waverly (Dean Jagger, »

The B Noir festival is a hit! It's always a delight to hear about retrospective programming doing well. There are still people out there interested in and trying out old movies in theaters. Or maybe the San Francisco noir crowd is just that strong. I'd written about "I Wake Up Dreaming" a couple of weeks back (read it here); I have since went and saw some of the movies they're playing.
If you're in the Bay Area and you haven't spared the time, there's good news. The festival was supposed to end this Thursday, but I have just been informed that since it is selling out so well, they've decided to add another week of showings!
The list of extra screenings is at the bottom, but before that, I want to recommend trying to get to this Friday's showing of The Devil Thumbs a Ride, which I managed to catch on the fest's opening night. »

Chicago – Still trying to get over an Oscar hangover? There’s no better way to deflate the pomposity of awards season than with a wicked car chase. Of course, one of the best of all time hit Blu-Ray this week in the controversial Blu-Ray release of “The French Connection,” but the same studio also released another pair of movies dedicated to automobile aficionados and an animated sci-fi comedy when all the metal destruction gets too much to take.
Two of the best car movies of all time - 1971’s “Vanishing Point” and 1998’s “Ronin” - hit Blu-Ray for the first time this week and the final “Futurama” movie, “Into the Wild Green Yonder” also hit the format. All three of these titles were released on February 24th, 2009.

We know you loved Jeffrey Dean Morgan as the dearly departed Denny Duquette on Grey's Anatomy, John Winchester on Supernatural and Judah Botwin on Weeds. (Why does he always play dead people?) Luckily for all you Jdm fans, we snagged an interview with the up-and-coming movie star to chat about his role in Warner Bros.' Watchmen, which hits theaters March 6.
Directed by the visionary behind 300, Zack Snyder, Watchmen is based off the 1986 comic book series of the same name. The story is set in an alternative 1985, where superheroes exist and tensions between the U.S. and the Soviet Union are coming to a boiling point. Rorschach, a superhero vigilante, investigates the murder of a former hero, The Comedian (Morgan), and inadvertently discovers a widespread conspiracy to kill heroes, in turn changing the course of history.
So, what would you ask Jeffrey Dean about Watchmen, Grey's and his other ventures. »

Blu-Ray Rating: 4.0/5.0 Chicago – When I hear phrases like “screen icon” or “Hollywood legend,” one of the first people that I think of is Natalie Wood. Six of the famous star’s films have been compiled for the “Natalie Wood Collection,” a great starter set for classic movie buffs intrigued by this timeless star or collector’s looking to enhance their catalog.
Gone way too soon, Wood appeared in 56 film and television roles, becoming an internationally recognized star before she was even old enough to drive. Wood first appeared on screen when she was only five and won acclaim when she was only nine for her work in “Miracle on 34th Street”. She would go on to start in irrefutable classics like “Rebel Without a Cause” and “West Side Story”. She was nominated for three Academy Awards and seven Golden Globes, winning three of the latter.
