BBC4 to adapt Dh Lawrence's Women in Love

Drama joins TV version of John Braine's Room at the Top in season exploring love and sexuality in 20th century literature

It was responsible for one of the most memorable fight scenes ever committed to celluloid. Now Dh Lawrence's Women in Love, turned into a film by Ken Russell starring Oliver Reed and Alan Bates, is to be adapted as a TV drama for BBC4.

Women in Love and John Braine's novel Room at the Top will lead a season of programmes on the BBC digital arts and culture channel exploring love and sexuality in 20th century literature.

Russell's 1969 adaptation, for which Glenda Jackson won a best actress Oscar, made cinema history with the controversial naked wrestling contest between Reed and Bates. It remains to be seen how the BBC4 version will tackle the scene.

The new adaptation will also draw on Lawrence's The Rainbow, to which Women in Love »

Two Mewls for Sister Sarah

11 May 2009 12:42 PM, PDT | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

It's a symptom of how forlorn and grasping for a foothold the right blogosphere has become that it can raise a flutter over this flap of doodle, yet another repentant confession by a former lefty who now sees the tragic error of his (in this case, her) ways. All the standard ho-hum ironies of the apostate genre are here, such as the discovery that liberals, who make such a big fetish of preaching tolerance, are in fact the most intolerant of all! "My local greeting card store sold very flattering cards about Obama, insulting ones about Hillary, and a Hillary 'nutcracker.' When I complained, the young male manager literally laughed in my face." Literally! Like Lucifer! Such mockery and disrespect was but prelude. Things went from bad to worse when Sarah Palin entered the scene. When Geraldine Ferraro ran for Vice President, there was no debasement of her character, »

Tony Award Nominations / Movie Connections

5 May 2009 11:42 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

The Tony Award Nominations are upon us. As is my inconsistent tradition, I thought I'd share a little bit about a movies you can rent or think about to create an unfulfilling celluloid guilty-by-association approximation of the Broadway experience of the 2008/2009 season before the TONYs roll around on June 7th. Not everyone gets to New York to see the shows. And even if you live here, like me, you don't get to them in your financially challenged years. Tony Winners Cynthia Nixon (who seems to be everywhere lately, right?) and In the Height's man Lin-Manuel Miranda are announcing them live any minute now.

If you want a reminder of what's eligible which you can use to see who got snubbed check out this eligibility chart.

Olivier Awards to 'Black Watch' and the Bard

9 March 2009 9:07 AM, PDT | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

The Olivier Awards -- London's equivalent to the Tony Awards -- were dominated by home-grown winners when the 33rd edition of the kudos unwrapped Sunday night in an event hosted by James Nesbitt at Grosvenor House.

Only one of the top awards went to an American production, as the 2006 Tony best musical champ "Jersey Boys" took the tuner prize. The show, which recounts the story of the Four Seasons using their songs, prevailed against only one other contender -- "Zorro," a telling of the old tale set to the music of the Gipsy Kings.

The 2008 Tony-winning best play "August: Osage County" was bested by Gregory Burke's drama "Black Watch," while its leading lady -- the Tony-winning Deanna Dunagan -- lost to Margaret Tyzack for a revival of "The Chalk Garden." That production of the 1955 Enid Bagnold psychological drama, which also won lighting design, originated at the Donmar Warehouse. That »

Oscar Did You Knows?

23 February 2009 11:49 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

a few pieces of useless trivia for you!

...that in the elite community of actors who've won more than one Oscar, all thirty-eight of them with Sean Penn as the newest club member, the average wait for the second statue is 9 years. Kate Winslet for the win in 2017, baby! Of course, for some actors the love affair with the Academy is intense and feverish and the statues are back to back (Tom Hanks, Luise Rainer, Jason Robards, Spencer Tracy) as if the voting body wanted to seal the deal before they started showing... if you know what I mean. The most common wait time though is strangely but a 3 year span. That's happened to five goddesses of the silver screen (Glenda Jackson, Jodie Foster, Meryl Streep, Bette Davis and Olivia DeHavilland).

Only four actors have won three or more Oscars (Katharine Hepburn, Walter Brennan, Jack Nicholson, and Ingrid Bergman) and »
