DVD Playhouse—November 2009

By

Allen Gardner

Watchmen—The Ultimate Cut (Warner Bros.) Director Zack Snyder’s film of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel is as worthy an adaptation of a great book that has ever been filmed. In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters. Former masks Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson), Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) and still-operating Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley, in an Oscar-worthy turn) launch an investigation of their own, all while the Pentagon’s “Doomsday »

David Siegel And Scott McGehee, Uncertainty

11 November 2009 10:09 AM, PST | Filmmaker Magazine-Director Interviews | See recent Filmmaker Magazine_Director Interviews news »

If one had only a single adjective with which to describe the body of work that directing team David Siegel and Scott McGehee have crafted over the past decade and a half, cerebral immediately jumps to mind. Since their debut film Suture (1993), an austere, black and white thriller starring Dennis Haysbert that took Toronto and Sundance by storm, they have often found it difficult to get their peculiar brand of thoughtful, idea driven filmmaking off the ground. Even if it was far from experimental hijinks of a Hollis Frampton or Kenneth Anger, the fact that the original Suture VHS and DVD boxes from MGM were packaged as "Avant-Garde Cinema" surely didn't help the film find the audience it should have. After The Deep End (2001), a... »

[TV] Justice League: The Complete Series

6 November 2009 8:30 AM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Before I start gushing about just how great this cartoon and, by connection, this set are, let’s establish two things. First, for every good thing I have to say about the entire set I include a single footnote: this should be available in a Blu-ray release as well, the animation would be sharper and bolder, the audio would be stunning and the entire package would have had that much more relevance considering the current trends of digital media. Second, this is so much more than just a ‘cartoon’. As is said a few times in the extra features of the series, Justice League may be the greatest superhero animated series to have ever existed. So what does that imply about this complete series set? One of the best ever?

TV Recap: ‘Flash Forward – Gimme Some Truth’

23 October 2009 2:30 PM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

With the departure of Marc Guggenheim, this leaves me a little dismayed with FlashForward and last night’s episode was a bit of departure and not that good. It did, however, expand on some characters, rather than just focusing on Fiennes and Cho. We spent time getting to know Courtney B. Vance’s character of Stanford Wedeck, who is Head of the FBI La office, and Christine Wood’s character Janis Stark.

We open on Fiennes, Cho, Vance and guest star Barry Henley as Agent Vreede, walking out of some building.  Fiennes and Vance are talking and Vance says something about not telling anybody anything about his [Fiennes] flash forward or they are”d.o.a.” Fiennes is on the phone with Janis Hawk telling her something about funding.  Getting into a car, they are immediately set upon by a black SUV and hit with a Rocket Propelled Grenade blowing up the car, »

DVD: Review:The Unit: The Complete Series

20 October 2009 10:01 PM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

Reading the credits on The Unit drew serious saliva from quality-tv junkies: The Shield’s Shawn Ryan and ace writer-director David Mamet co-created and exec-produced the four-season CBS drama about the Army’s elite Delta Force, and Dennis Haysbert, fresh from his turn on 24, stars. But lofty expectations weren’t met: The Unit played out like an adult (or maybe young-adult) version of The A-Team—a fantastical imagining of a covert counter-intelligence force equipped with moral clarity, superhuman skills, and a MacGyver-like knack for getting out of any scrape. That said, all four seasons of The Unit are compulsively ... »

Nicole Steinwedell Discusses The Unit

8 October 2009 7:07 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

After going through the usual string of career-starting roles in guest-starring TV stints and small film roles, Nicole Steinwedell found her big break when she was cast as Bridget Sullivan in The Unit, although sadly that break was short-lived when the series was canceled earlier this year. Thanks to the magic of DVD, though, the series can live on in homes forever with the recent release of the 19-disc complete series set The Unit: The Complete Giftset, which was released on DVD on September 29 along with the final season DVD sets The Unit: Season 4 on DVD and Blu-ray. I had the chance to talk to this lovely young actress over the phone recently, and here's what she had to say.

So, can you first talk about how you came on board with The Unit and maybe your first experiences meeting with (creator) David (Mamet) of (executive producer) Shawn (Ryan)?

The Unit: What Would Have Happened in the Fifth (and Likely) Final Season

20 August 2009 4:20 PM, PDT | TVSeriesFinale.com | See recent TVSeriesFinale news »

Much to the dismay of the show's loyal followers, The Unit was cancelled by CBS in May. The series' viewership had declined in its later years but, despite being preempted several times, still attracted 9.67 million viewers in season four.

The Unit was supposedly being seriously considered to continue in first-run syndication but the deal didn't work out, likely because of production costs. Sadly, while the military drama and Dennis Haysbert, Regina Taylor, Robert Patrick, and Scott Foley will be around in syndication for years to come, we won't be seeing season five of The Unit.

It turns out that the writers had a full plan for year five which Executive Producer Shawn Ryan was expecting to be the show's last. He pitched the storyline ideas to the CBS execs but ultimately they weren't interested.

Tracking Shot August 2009: Petits Mouchoirs, Pieds Nus and Barney's Version

1 August 2009 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- At the beginning of every month, Ioncinema.com's "Tracking Shot" features six projects that are moments away from lensing and that we feel are worth signaling out. This August (2009), we are keeping tabs on: a Canadian financed pic with top tier talent, that for the next weeks becomes known as the film that the radiant Rachelle Lebevre committed to and which annoyed Summit Ent., the re-appearance of The Details (it receives a second life), three French filmmakers (Julie Bertucelli, Fabienne Berthaud) on their sophomore efforts and Guillaume Canet on pic number three and finally, master filmmaker Mike Leigh is getting set for his latest project for Focus Features. Noteworthy films that we'll also be keeping tabs on is the remakes for Straw Dogs and Larry Clark's Mona Lisa (I heard that funding was a problem) and Oliver Stone's Money Never Sleeps - the sequel to Wall Street. »

[DVD Review] Green Lantern: First Flight

26 July 2009 10:00 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

DC and Marvel need to do more direct-to-dvd animated movies – these things are pure popcorn munching, comic book nostalgia fun. While Marvel’s have sputtered and died as of late, with decent Iron Man and Dr. Strange films taking back seat to two Avengers flicks, the DC movies just keep steady on a plateau of enjoyable entertainment. Justice League: The New Frontier took the heroic team back into the 1950s while Wonder Woman gave the spotlight over to one of the most underappreciated heroes in DC’s coffers. Green Lantern: First Flight continues the tradition of highlighting the supporting cast of the Justice League with outstanding animation treatment of Earth’s first representative to the Green Lantern Corps of Oa.

Green Lantern fans may debate between which incarnation of the Green Lantern deserved to be the center of this animated film, but I think we can all agree Golden Age »

Mid-Week Movie News Wrap Up - July 15, 2009

15 July 2009 10:59 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

It’s officially mid-week and here’s what’s going on:

Harry Potter waves his wand at midnight and conjures box office records; the Heathers may be gone for good; Cox and Arquette are Screaming again; Robin Hood has its King Richard; The Limey may get a sequel; it’s a wrap for Nightmare on Elm Street; The Crow will fly again for the first time; Warner Bros. may be returning to the Major League; and The Toronto Film Festival has a list of flicks that could become next year’s greats.

Let’s get to it:

.

1. Variety is reporting that Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince conjured up a whopping $20 million in box office receipts from midnight showings alone. If this figure holds, it would make the sixth installment of J.K. Rowling’s wizard adventure the highest-grossing midnight debut of all time. Previous record holders were The Dark Knight »

Spider-Man 4 Lands a New Writer

8 July 2009 10:14 PM, PDT | TheMovingPicture.net | See recent TheMovingPicture news »

Oscar nominated screenwriter Gary Ross has come on board to rewrite Sony’s highly anticipated Spider-Man 4. Ross joins James Vanderbilt (Zodiac) and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire on the list of high-profile writers who have been working on the project. Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire are back as director and star, respectively, as are series producers Laura Ziskin and Avi Arad. While not being officially confirmed yet, Kristen Dunst, who plays Spidey’s love interest Mary Jane Watson, is also expected to be back. Ross previously wrote Big, Mr. Baseball and Dave and also wrote and directed Pleasantville and Seabiscuit, both of which starred Maguire. Ross and Maguire are also currently developing Tokyo Suckerpunch, a drama set up at Columbia; although that project is now on hold as Ross tackles another writing project, Columbia's Lance Armstrong biopic. Before filming begins on Spider-Man 4 early next year, Maguire will star »

Tobey Maguire Finds More Marital Dysfunction

8 July 2009 5:45 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

One day he's getting tortured by the Taliban and then heads home to discover that his bad-boy brother is getting saucy with his wife. The next, he's taking part in a modern War of the Roses. Variety reports that Tobey Maguire is taking on more marital dysfunction by starring in Jacob Estes' new indie black comedy called The Details alongside Elizabeth Banks.

The pair (which was once set to be Banks and James McAvoy) will play a troubled married couple struggling with infidelity and other marital issues. But here's where things get strange: "their lives [are] further complicated by ravenous raccoons burrowing under the sod in their back yard. A disagreement over how to dispatch the pests creates a chain reaction of mishaps that include a murder by bow and arrow." There's nothing like a few coonies to ruin a marriage! Just in case that insane plot isn't enough to whet your appetite, »

Tobey Maguire to replace James McAvoy in 'Details'

8 July 2009 11:39 AM, PDT | screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news »

Tobey Maguire has signed on to join Elizabeth Banks, Ray Liotta, Dennis Haysbert and Anna Friel in Jacob Aaron Estes' upcoming comedy "The Details." Laura Linney is also in talks to join.

James McAvoy was originally set to star in the project, but as Variety reports, a conflict in schedule forced him to drop out. Maguire will take over his role.

"Details" follows a married couple struggling with their relationship. Things get a lot worse when they discover an infestation of raccoons in their yard and completely disagree on how to handle the situation.

Estes also directed 2004's excellent thriller "Mean Creek." As for Maguire, he's got tons of future projects in development. He will soon be seen in Jim Sheridan's "Brothers" remake. You'll also probably see him return as the lead in "Spider-Man 4." »

Tobey Maguire Will Star In Indie Film The Details

8 July 2009 7:03 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Tobey Maguire is joining the cast of The Details, an indie black comedy which seeks to address the severe shortage of raccoon infestation movies that has plagued the cinema of late. According to Variety, he'll be husband to Elizabeth Banks, with Ray Liotta, Dennis Haysbert, Anna Friel and Laura Linney also appearing. Directing is Jacob Estes, whose credit was last seen on 2004's decent and (now) frequently forgotten Mean Creek. Also factoring into the film: a bunch of determined raccoons. This isn't some suburban Caddyshack, though. Maguire and Banks play a couple who are having some problems. There's been some infidelity, they don't know if they should stay together...and then the raccoons show up, like the shark in Jaws. (More maybe more like the winged aggressors in The Birds, if we're talking metaphors.) The critters are destroying the back yard, and "a disagreement over how to dispatch the pests »

Tobey Maguire And Elizabeth Banks To Star In ‘The Details’

8 July 2009 7:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Tobey Maguire is really making up for lost time. He briefly dropped out of the spotlight after “Spider-Man 3,” choosing to focus on family rather than film roles. He’s making a return with “Brothers,” due out later this year, and has subsequently lined up roles in “The Limit,” “Good People” and possibly “Robotech.” Of course, there’s also that little movie called “Spider-Man 4” on the horizon. While Maguire waits for his enormous pre-production slate to come together, he’ll be joining Elizabeth Banks in Jacob Estes‘ indie black comedy “The Details.”

The plot revolves around a young married couple who are struggling with infidelity and a rocky relationship, as well as a pack of hungry raccoons that burrow into their backyard. The bickering couple can’t agree on how best to get rid of them, and it creates a terrible chain reaction of events that culminates in someone »

Tobey Maguire adds Further 'Details' to Delayed Estes' Indie Pic

8 July 2009 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- It appears that Jacob Estes' production woes for his latest film The Details were of the momentary glitch kind. The production according to Variety has been salvaged and will be set for a re-start next month as they have found a last minute replacement for James McAvoy in Tobey Maguire. We had reported that production had stalled and were clueless as to why.  Almost the same fit, mold and age, producers on The Details might have taken a look at the recently released trailer for Jim Sheridan's The Brothers (see trailer here) to get a sense on what kind of dramatic range the thesp could offer. I imagine to a certain extent, that the Spidey roles can typecast an actor. Estes mentioned, "Maguire's character is an everyman in the sense that he is composed of a morally ambiguous core". The news piece also mentions that the supporting cast »
