DVD Review: ‘Mi-5: Volume 1′

7 July 2009 8:30 AM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

I thought this week we could scoot across the pond and visit one of my favorite television series discoveries.  A few years back, I was watching BBC America, and I stumbled on a show called Mi-5.  If you’re in the UK or are a hard-core Anglophile, you probably know the show as Spooks. But here in the Us, a title like that could bring the Aclu kicking and screaming to the gates of Warner Bros., so they ended up going a different way here in the States.

Mi-5 is about the clandestine British security service of the same name. It stars the delicious Matthew MacFadyen (Pride and Prejudice) as Tom Quinn, the stoic and complicated officer who leads a band of talented young spies in their daily struggles against terrorism, organized crime, anarchists, and their sister organization, Mi-6.  The subtly sexy Keeley Hawes is Zoe Reynolds, the female officer »

Is 'Ashes To Ashes' back in style?

21 April 2009 10:00 PM, PDT | Digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Only in Ashes To Ashes could you be treated to a winning combination of Princess Margaret encountering a giant penis and the lead character's daughter getting a ticking off from Grange Hill's Mrs McClusky. Kicking off the second season in fine Eighties style, the episode neatly blends a self-contained murder mystery plot alongside the ongoing intrigue surrounding Alex Drake's comatose predicament. No radical alterations have been made to the show's format, ensuring that a steady flow of laughs are interspersed with the more dramatic and emotional aspects of the storyline. Gene Hunt's quips are as crude as ever (although nothing matches his legendary 'twanging of the royal hymen' line) and it's a treat to see Philip Glenister strutting back onto our screens free of any demonic American accent. Keeley Hawes has settled into her role as (more) »

Ashes To Ashes star Keeley Hawes has revealed that the show will have a "darker" tone this year. The actress, who plays Di Alex Drake on the BBC One drama, confirmed that the programme's writers decided to focus on sinister plotlines for the second series. Speaking to We Love Telly! magazine, Hawes explained: "It is a darker series. Alex is even questioning whether she actually belongs in 1982, and if 2008 is just an odd memory. "Which one is her real reality? There are more stories on police corruption (more) »

Philip Glenister defends 'Ashes' co-star

11 April 2009 11:44 AM, PDT | Digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Philip Glenister has called for fairer treatment of his Ashes To Ashes co-star Keeley Hawes ahead of the show's new series. Hawes suffered a frosty response from critics after she made her debut as Di Alex Drake on the BBC One time travel show last year. Glenister, who plays Dci Gene Hunt, later spoke out in support of the actress, claiming that her detractors should "hang their heads in shame". Reflecting on the criticism in a new interview with the Daily Record, Glenister explained: "What I objected to most was the personal nature of some of the attacks and the utter lack of appreciation of what a fine actress Keeley is, a woman (more) »

Keeley Hawes moves on from "Tipping the Velvet" to "Ashes to Ashes"

6 April 2009 9:00 AM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

Keeley Hawes, the actress that endeared herself to lesbian viewers across the world with her brilliant performance in Tipping the Velvet is the new star of Ashes to Ashes, the sequel to the BBC time traveling hit, Life on Mars.

Ashes to Ashes is in its second season in the UK but in the States, season one premiered last month on BBC America. In the show, Keeley plays a 21st century police psychologist named Alex Drake, who is catapulted back to 1981. In the '80s, she’s confronted with sexism and bad hair.

The amazing thing about Keeley Hawes is that you can do anything to her or her hair and she’ll still look amazing beautiful. Oh, and she gives great performances, too.

Anyone in the UK watching Ashes to Ashes? How does Hawes pull off her '80s 'dos and butt-kicking moves? »

Goodbye ABC’s “Life on Mars,” hello BBC’s “Ashes to Ashes”

10 March 2009 9:13 AM, PDT | IMDb Television Blog | See recent IMDb Television Blog news »

Keeley Hawes and Phillip Glenister in "Ashes to Ashes," from BBC America.

Though anyone who saw the original British version of “Life on Mars” likely saw the demise of Americanized version as inevitable, loyal viewers of the Wednesday night program must have been upset. Interestingly, the ABC drama’s ratings increased by around 24 percent shortly after the network announced it was putting it down. Lots of people must have tuned in to see if they were going to miss it when it was gone.

Fortunately BBC America has a balm for “Life on Mars’” fans: The cable channel premiered the original’s spinoff, “Ashes to Ashes,” on Saturday. “Ashes” conceit is virtually the same as that of “Mars,” and that familiarity also proves to be its weakness. In “Mars,”  Dci Sam… »

TV Review: BBC’s Excellent ‘Ashes to Ashes’ Picks Up Where ‘Life on Mars’ Left Off

7 March 2009 6:13 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Television Rating: 5.0/5.0 Chicago – “Ashes to Ashes” may be one of the most unusual choices for a TV sequel but sometimes the best series come from the most unexpected places. This may be the most pleasant surprise TV fans will get all year. The BBC’s brilliant “Life on Mars” has been dragged from the glitz and glamour of the ’70s to the turbulent ’80s in the as-good-and-arguably-better “Ashes to Ashes,” another notch in the belt of great BBC programming.

If you’re not watching BBC America, you’re missing some of the best television out there. Go to your local DVD store and catch up on seasons of the new incarnation of “Doctor Who,” “Robin Hood,” “Skins,” “Primeval,” and the amazingly entertaining “Torchwood”. The original “Life on Mars,” not the far-inferior (but still better than the near-cancellation predicament it is in) ABC remake, won’t be on DVD until July 28th, »
