What I Watched, What You Watched: Installment #13

18 October 2009 2:24 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

I watched a lot this week, but most of it was in theaters and not all at home. On Monday I saw The Road and Where the Wild Things Are (review); Tuesday was Astro Boy; Wednesday was Law Abiding Citizen (review); and Thursday was Good Hair (review) and my second time seeing An Education (review). On top of that I already mentioned how I watched the unrated version of Drag Me to Hell a second time on Blu-ray, which actually is quite bloodier than the PG-13 version that was in theaters, but I would say it detracts from the film's quality compared to the original. Beyond those flicks there are a few more, and as always a few quick words on each follows.

As always, remember you can keep tabs on my personal Netflix queue right here. I now have 50 friends on the movie rental site and would love to »

Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever. (August 14, 2009)

13 August 2009 10:38 PM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

Just When You Think It's Safe To Go Back In The TV Water

To keep things interesting (for you and for me), I've decided to reserve this first page for whatever I want to write about each week — whether that's nominations for the Woman of the Week, a news roundup, highlights of relevant tweets, or a rant about something relevant to the site.

This week, it's a rant. About (surprise) lesbians on TV. Specifically, about the new development involving the only leading lesbian on TV next season: Ming-Na's Camille on Stargate: Universe.

If you haven't been following our coverage of the upcoming Syfy series that debuts in October, here's a short summary: Ming-Na plays Camille Wray, an openly gay Hr exec who is among a group of scientists and soldiers whose ship, Destiny, gets trapped on the other side of a Stargate (a transportation device to other galaxies), forcing them »

"Saving Grace" takes “Lesbian Attack” literally

12 August 2009 1:00 PM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

The episode of Saving Grace we told you about last month, “Looks Like a Lesbian Attack to Me,” aired last night. My one word review: Ick.

Not that it was all yucky. After all, Clea Duvall guest starred.

Caution — Spoilers ahead.

Duvall played Mara, a lesbian cop whose brother Ricky was murdered. She found the body, so is devastated. She is also quite bruised from what she tells Grace (Holly Hunter) is “a fight with a s---head.” Since Ricky was beaten to death, Mara becomes the main suspect.

In the course of the investigation, we meet Gillian (Karina Logue), Mara’s girlfriend, who plans “outings” (yes, that’s what she said) for the lesbian community.

For some unimaginable reason, Gillian thinks Grace is a lesbian and invites her to join the mailing list for the next “Lesbian Attack,” when lesbians take over a straight bar. I loved that Grace just »

Mildly wig out for a few seconds with the trailer for 'The Killing Room'

4 August 2009 8:34 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Jonathan Liebesman's The Killing Room -- starring Nick Cannon, Timothy Hutton, Peter Stormare, Chloe Sevigny, Shea Whigham and Clea DuVall -- premiered at Sundance earlier this year but never made it to U.S. theaters. It'll be available for purchase on DVD on October 19 in the U.S., but you can already Netflix it or rent it at something called a "video store." In the film, four volunteers for what appears to be a paid research study get caught up in a classified government program. Quick! What number do Americans choose most frequently between 1 and 33? I would have said 12 because I always say 12 and I'm such a contrarian, but now 7 is making a lot of sense to me, too. Mind control. The official trailer is below. What do you think, and may we monitor those thoughts? And Choose A Number. »

Update: A Trailer Takes You to The Killing Room

3 August 2009 11:49 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

A trailer has surfaced for Darkness Falls and TCM: The Beginning director Jonathan Liebesman's new film The Killing Room, and we have it for you all cold and dead-like.

The film starring Chloe Sevigny, Peter Stormare, Clea DuVall, and Timothy Hutton follows a group of four people who, after signing up for some thought-to-be harmless psychological tests, end up finding out that they're now playing a part in a nasty little classified government program. The film co-stars Nick Cannon, who will no doubt dole out a little psychological torment of his own on us viewers with his performance.

Check out the trailer and DVD art below. Look for the film on October 13th from Genius Products.

Jonathan Liebesman’s The Killing Room Movie Trailer

3 August 2009 10:39 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

The Killing Room is part Saw (without the torture porn), part Cube (minus the sci-fi), but with a more psychological edge. The film tells the story of four volunteers who sign up for what initially appears to be a typical paid research study, only to discover that they've unwittingly become involved with a classified government program that was said to have been terminated nearly two decades ago. The super classified government program to test the nature and limits of the human psyche. Starring Nick Cannon, Timothy Hutton, Peter Stormare, Chloe Segivny, Shea Whigam and Clea DuVall. I got a chance to see this film at Sundance this year, and horror director Jonathan Liebesman crafted a nice little minimalist thriller. You can watch an early trailer for the film embedded after the jump. The video quality isn't perfect (seems like some interlacing issues) but it is very watchable. Thanks to Chris »

Fox's "Virtuality" pilot a great start to a sci-fi series - but will Fox pick it up?

29 June 2009 2:00 PM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

Able to take contemporary television in a tongue-in-cheek manner, Fox’s new show Virtuality does a wonderfully ironic job of mocking the reality television that the network also does so (arguably) well. But what makes the show truly special is the complex character interactions that creator Ronald D Moore handles better than almost any other maker of sci-fi TV or film.

The pilot has already tackled the exploitation of the show’s openly gay male couple when they are persuaded to continue their queeny bickering for the camera. However, it was placed perfectly in the context of a greedy television studio’s desire for ratings at any cost. It may not be a reason to not suspect the real life Fox of these very same improprieties but it is a place to begin the discussion.

But what the ladies most look forward to is the hard-as-nails Clea DuVall, who plays top pilot Sue Parson. »

[TV] The Sad Reality of "Virtuality"

29 June 2009 12:08 AM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

So, who watched Virtuality Friday night? No? Didn't think so. Say bye-bye to this intriguing project, which was conceived as a pilot for a new series but aired as a movie when Fox didn't want to pick it up. Any chance of convincing them otherwise is a bust, as the broadcast resulted in truly abysmal ratings, no doubt ensuring its demise.

A lot of people who didn't know it was supposed to be a pilot episode of a series are apparently annoyed that it abruptly ended without a conclusion. It didn't work as a standalone movie, of course, because it was never meant to be. Most of the two-hour pilot are setting up conflicts for future episodes to explore. It's all the more aggravating for it, because the pilot really shows enormous potential for a fantastic drama should it be allowed to continue.

Virtuality: Online Opinions & Quick Reminder That It Airs Tonight, June 26th

26 June 2009 4:46 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Ronald D. Moore’s Virtuality airs this Friday night (June 26th) on Fox and from this writer’s perspective, it has come down a long and harrowing path to get here.

The project started out being lined up as a television pilot and through some unknown series of decisions, Fox has again taken a proven showrunner’s idea and seemingly squashed it with their thumb.

The show that was originally slated to be a pilot for a series has been reduced to a 2-hour movie that’s being aired in the vacuum of Friday.  At least Fox is consistent in their handling of sci-fi projects.

The show is from executive producers Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek: The Next Generation) and Michael Taylor (Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek: Voyager) and stars Kerry Bishe, Ritchie Coster, Eric Jensen, Nelson Lee, Joy Bryant, Clea Duvall, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Sienna Guillory, James D’Arcy, »

Clea DuVull stars in the very gay "Virtuality" tonight

26 June 2009 1:00 PM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

The two-hour pilot for the sci-fi series Virtuality airs tonight on Fox, starring Clea DuVall — which is pretty exciting since she's hasn't been on TV regularly since the two seasons on Carnivale. (Let's face it — Lifetime movies, while totally addicting, just don't cut it.)

The show is about a group of astronauts who are on a decade-long mission to the nearest star, but who spend their free time getting wrapped up in virtual reality. Random? We'll see. Clea plays pilot Sue Parson, whose choice virtual reality activity is surfing.

You'd think the show creators would be smart enough to know viewers would prefer to see her actually surfing. You know, bikini top, board shorts, tan, ocean mist, etc. But hey, Clea's on TV — we'll take what we can get, right?

In a recent interview about how the show's executive producer Ron Moore (also behind Battlestar Galactica and Carnivale) doesn't shy away from featuring uncommon characters, »

12 Minutes from Ron Moore’s ‘Virtuality’

16 June 2009 2:30 PM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Fox has released about twelve minutes of clips from BSG Exec. Producer Ron Moore’s upcoming tv movie that may or may not end up being a series Virtuality. The footage helps give all kinds of insight into the world, characters and situations that the show depicts. Of course, seeing these makes me hope the show does get picked up. But sadly, that’s pretty unlikely at this point, which is why Fox is airing the tv movie version.

More in the style and tone of Blade Runner or Alien than BSG, this show, in case you’re not familiar, concerns a dozen astronauts on a journey crucial to the survival of life on Earth. The crew can access a virtual world to keep them entertained during their decade-long journey. When problems begin with the virtual system, things get tense and the crew begins to wonder what’s real and »

'Virtuality' Pilot Blasts into Friday Oblivion

3 June 2009 12:20 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Fox has announced that it will broadcast the two-hour sci-fi pilot for Virtuality, co-created by Battlestar Galactica majordomo Ronald D. Moore, in its June 26 Friday timeslot...the scheduling bone yard where  projects have been essentially sent to die for...oh, the past five decades or so now.

The move fortifies previous reports that the Vancouver-filmed pilot will not net a series after all. It was not mentioned during Fox's 2009-2010 schedule upfronts last month.

Of course, if the pilot does astounding numbers, then everything we've said above will go out the window faster than a kitty at a canine convention—but we're not holding our breath. They would have to be pretty astounding.

Fox To Air Ronald D. Moore’s Virtuality

3 June 2009 4:27 AM, PDT | The Cinema Post | See recent The Cinema Post news »

Virtuality” is about the crew of the spaceship ‘Phaeton’ who are approaching a vital stage of their epic 10-year journey through outer space. With the weight of the world on their shoulders and their lives being taped for a reality show back on Earth, the pressure is intense. To keep the crew members sane, there is a virtual reality technology device installed on the ship. With the help of that particular device, the crew members can be anyone they want, anywhere at any time, despite living in a closed environment in the lonely vastness of space. Complications arise when they realize there is a glitch in the system which inflicts damage on the psyche of the crew members and unleashes a virus on the ship. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (”New Amsterdam”), Sienna Guillory (”Love Actually”) and Clea Duvall (”Carnivale”)  star among others. Peter Berg (”Friday Night Lights”) directed the pilot.

Blu-Ray Review: Anne Hathaway, Patrick Wilson in Supernatural ‘Passengers’

14 May 2009 6:20 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – There have been several interesting movies about plane crashes, none more so than Peter Weir’s amazing “Fearless” with its career-best performance by Jeff Bridges. There’s something nearly supernatural about surviving falling from the sky in a several-ton hunk of metal. It’s that otherworldly quality that Anne Hathaway and Patrick Wilson use for creepy thrills in the moderately effective “Passengers,” now on Blu-Ray and DVD.

Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0 When a movie doesn’t even open in Chicago and heads straight to the Netflix queue, most viewers, including this critic, have a natural pessimistic apprehension. But I couldn’t believe that such a talented cast as Anne Hathaway, Patrick Wilson, Andre Braugher, Dianne Wiest, and David Morse could produce something truly horrible.

I was right. There are parts of “Passengers” that truly work. It’s not horrible and vastly superior to the loathsome “Bride Wars”. But it’s also »

Weekly TV Wrap Up - May 14th, 2009

13 May 2009 11:40 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Today’s Weekly TV Wrap Up will have a little One Tree Hill (Something a bit new, but a reader asked about the show.), some more on Dollhouse after the finale and Lie To Me news. We also touch on David E. Kelley’s disappointment, the dumping of a few shows by NBC and how Fox seems to be treating Ronald D. Moore’s Virtuality just like Dollhouse, but worse - If you can imagine that. I also have some David Tennant news for you.

Despite the season finales, it’s a bit of a quiet week for me.  Of course, I have the TV ratings from last week and a bit of a surprise at the end of the post, if you make it that far.

Shall we get on with it?

Michael Taylor and Ronald D. Moore’s Virtuality Pilot On Fox’s Summer Radar

11 May 2009 7:50 AM, PDT | SciFiCool.com | See recent SciFiCool.com news »

On July 4th, Fox will air BattleStar creators Michael Taylor and Ronald D. Moore’s new Sci-Fi series hopeful “Virtuality”. “Virtuality” is about life aboard the Phaeton, mankind’s first starship. Shipboard existence on the Phaeton is apparently pretty realistic. A bunch of people, locked together in a tiny ship on a 10 year journey. To prevent the crew from going Space Crazy like Ren and Stimpy, the crew uses virtual reality to get away from the claustrophobia and burning desire to jam a space widget into the nearest crewman’s back. All is well until something malevalent infects the program controlling those virtual visions of campfires on the beach or ski bunnies in Whistler. Trapped in a tiny tin can, elbow to elbow with smelly spacemen and spacewomen with your only escape an evil horrorshow? Sounds terrific! Like I said, Fox has got the 2 hour extravaganza on July 4th at 8:00 Est. »

More on Ron Moore's Virtuality and when you can see it

8 May 2009 2:17 PM, PDT | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

With rumors abound that Ron Moore's new show, Virtuality, was getting the standard confused looks from Fox executives, we weren't exactly holding our breath for it. But word from the futoncritic is that the 2 hour pilot will actually air on Saturday, July 4 8:00/7:00c. Good news right? Well it wasn't necessarily all that exciting for me either until I learned more about the show's set up from Charlie Jane Anders who reviewed the pilot for i09:

"Virtuality is the story of the crew of the "Phaeton," a deep-space exploration vessel, who use virtual reality to distract themselves from the claustrophobia and boredom of deep space (until something inevitably goes wrong), but there's way more to it than that. For one thing, the ship really is incredibly claustrophobic and slow, not roomy and zoomy like the Enterprise. For another, the crew are forced to take part in a »
