Tan Dun, who composed the original score for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, has responded to protests by Chinese composer Ning Yong that his music was used in the film without his permission. Tan, who, along with other filmmakers connected with the hit movie, was named in a suit filed by Ning, told the BBC that Ning had failed to recognize that directors often employ both original music and "source" music. Tan said that the film's production company negotiated an agreement with the China Records Shanghai Company for the use of Ning's music.

Symbolically, nine statues of a man embracing a sword were handed out Sunday night to two films in which swords were brandished with gusto: Gladiator and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Gladiator received five of the Oscar statues, including ones for Best Picture and Best Actor. Crouching Tiger won the Best Foreign Film award.
