Gus Van Sant's Psycho remake is always going to divide opinion, those who see it as a conceptual art statement being able to argue, quite reasonably, that its failure to do the things Hitchcock's original does—create a consistent story world, stylized but credible characters, a sense of doom, suspense—is exactly the proof needed of its success as a conceptual artifact, dramatically redundant yet stubbornly existent.

Would the same people say the same thing for Edward Dmytryk's The Blue Angel, a faithful yet utterly arbitrary remake of Josef Von Sternberg's Der blaue Engel. Sternberg's production, Germany's first sound film, is so iconic and so utterly of its time—it marks the beginning of the Marlene myth, as well as the end of silence—that any kind of remake seems like an exercise in redundancy, like the Coens's joke proposal to re-shoot Stanley Kramer's well-intentioned liberal »

This Friday, San Francisco's Roxie Theater begins two weeks of unfiltered B-movie goodness when "I Wake Up Dreaming: The Haunted World of the B Film Noir" unleashes some of the nastiest film noir of the 40's and 50's, coming in not so long after the fog of Noir City 7 rolled over.

There's plenty of things to like about San Francisco. The view, the vibe, the history... But for a noir fan, it's a place I had come to know as and will always associate with the nooks and crannies depicted in hardboiled crime stories. Where else, I ask, would you get two stirring film noir festivals only a few months apart, but in Sam Spade's chosen city?

Thaddeus O'Sullivan to Direct 'Obsession'

Irish director Thaddeus O'Sullivan (Ordinary Decent Criminal, December Bride) is being lined up to direct the new psychological thriller, 'Obsession' adapted from Alec Coppel's novel 'A Man About A Dog' by screenwriter Rob Green (House). The film involves a Manhattan based doctor who plots revenge against his wife's lover. Coppel's novel has already been adapted from the screen by Edward Dmytryk in 1949's 'The Hidden Room'. The new version will be produced by Think Tank Films with shooting scheduled to commence later in the year in Detroit and New York. »

Alec Coppel's novel "A Man About a Dog" is being adapted once again, this time by Think Tank Films . Thaddeus O'Sullivan will direct from a script by Rob Green ( The Bunker , House ). Described as a psychological thriller, the story centers around a jealous husband and the revenge scheme he exacts against his wife's lover. The title "A Man About a Dog" takes its cue from the narrative's canine who leads investigators to the husband. Richard Johns ( Shadow of the Vampire ) and Rupert Jermyn will produce. Coppel's source material was realized in 1949 by Edward Dmytryk and was known then as Obsession , or, The Hidden Room . »
