Leisha Hailey and Christina Hendricks gather in "La Cucina"

15 December 2009 10:00 AM, PST | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

What would it take for you to see a movie most of you have never heard about before? What if I told you it involved food? My Top Chef people are already there. How about if I mentioned it starred Leisha Hailey? Now I’ve hooked a bunch of you. And what if I added it also starred Christina Hendricks. More of you, good. And, finally, what if I were to casually say supermodel Rachel Hunter played a lesbian. And, we have a winner.

The independent film La Cucina is coming to DVD Jan. 12. The romantic drama, which was released in 2007, tells three interweaving stories as the lives of a group of neighbors unfold in, what else, their kitchens. Check out the trailer here.

The film marks Mad Men’s Christina’s feature film debut. She plays Lily, who just met the older Michael (Joaquim de Almeida). Leisha, meanwhile plays »

Cheeky New Poster for Christopher Roth

14 December 2009 12:20 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Usually we wait until there are some solid details surrounding a film project before we start to report on them. But there are those rare cases when we see or hear something that gets our attention and keeps us on edge until we have something more to sink our teeth into. In this case we have a bare ass.

Bare asses are truly an attention getter, especially when it belongs to a female. We're big fans of the female bare ass around these parts, and a result the teaser poster for Max Sender's latest Italian thriller immediately caught our eye.

Not much is known about the film other than it stars Joaquim De Almeida as its title character and its tagline reads: It's hard to resist that little thrill you feel right before you go beyond the imaginary and "flirt" with reality.. We'll keep an eye on things for you. »

Meet Max Sender's Christopher Roth

14 December 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

Writer-director Max Sender is in post-production on the new thriller Christopher Roth . Joaquim De Almeida ( Desperado ) plays the eponymous role and, to be honest, there's little we know about the film other than what we can glean from the Italian production's Facebook page and official site . The former has a number of behind-the-scenes stills and some footage from the last day of shooting. Ben Gazzara ("Jackie Treehorn" from The Big Lebowski ) co-stars with Anna Galiena. The film's tagline goes like this: It's hard to resist that little thrill you feel right before you go beyond the imaginary and "flirt" with reality. Right-o. Could this be a Mr. Brooks -esque thriller? We'll do some digging and see if we can drum up some more details. »

Move over Julia Child, Christina Hendricks is in the kitchen!

10 December 2009 5:09 PM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

La Cucina is described as “a romantic drama about life, love and the joy of cooking.” But what you really need to know is that it marks the film debut of Mad Men’s beloved Joanie, Christina Hendricks. The cast also featuers Joaquim de Almeida (24), Rachel Hunter, and Leisha Hailey (The L Word). The DVD/Blu-Ray is out Jan. 12, but meanwhile you can see Christina drinking red wine and sexily eating some sort of potato chip in the trailer: Who’s hungry for La Cucina? »

'The Burning Plain': Smithereens, By Kurt Loder

Charlize Theron on the reassembly line.

Charlize Theron in "The Burning Plain"

I think everybody likes a good Wtf movie — remember "Memento"? But director Guillermo Arriaga, who specializes in this sort of thing as a screenwriter ("Babel," "21 Grams"), has scrambled the narrative of "The Burning Plain," his first feature, to no very interesting purpose. It's a beautifully made film, with a couple of arresting performances; but it's so solemn it almost puts itself to sleep, and so pointlessly disjointed you kind of wish it would take a nap.

There's a nice tingle of inscrutability right at the beginning, when we meet Sylvia (Charlize Theron), the manager of a sleek cliff-top restaurant on the Oregon coast. Sylvia is clearly dragging around a heavy burden of woe, which she attempts to lighten by sleeping with any man who comes within hailing distance, and occasionally by gouging her thigh with jagged stones. »

Review: The Burning Plain

17 September 2009 9:55 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

The time shifting interwoven character drama, in which multiple discordant storylines merge into a coherent whole, is the primary characteristic of the films of Alejandro González Iñárritu and longtime collaborator Guillermo Arriaga. Together, the men perfected the form in Amores Perros and 21 Grams. Its potency waned in Babel, the film that appears to have irreparably fractured their relationship. With The Burning Plain the form can be pronounced to be, if not officially dead, on its last bit of life support. What once seemed like a fresh and exciting method of storytelling, an offshoot of a mode popularized by Robert Altman and others, has become impossibly trite. Written and directed by Arriaga, the film cuts back and forth over more than a decade, weaves its way through two concrete settings and winds up at a place heavy on symbolism and melodrama but empty on ideas. Charlize Theron stars as Sylvia, proprietor of a high-end Portland restaurant and a »

Charlize Theron Answers Some Burning Questions

17 September 2009 7:01 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

When so many other Hollywood actresses are doing everything possible to look good, Charlize Theron seems determined to buck the trend by playing more rough-around-the-edges female roles. Her turn as the decidedly unattractive serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Monster shocked audiences but earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress. She followed up that role by playing a victim of sexual harassment in North Country, which also earned her an Oscar nomination. Theron is once again set to play an unglamorous role in The Burning Plain.

Directed by Guillermo Arriaga, the award-winning writer of Babel, 21 Grams, and Amores Perros, The Burning Plain is a non-linear tale in which Theron plays a sexually promiscuous, suicidal character who is forced to confront the sins of her past. While it sounds like playing a character with such heavy baggage would weigh an actor down emotionally, Theron says that it's just a job.

Megan Fox And Matt Damon Headline Big Releases In This Week's Box Office Poll

14 September 2009 1:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Before diving in with the coming week's releases, let's take a quick look at last week's. I think the poll results usually paint a pretty telling picture of who is reading this blog. The weekend's big box office winner, Tyler Perry's "I Can Do Bad All By Myself," failed to pick up a single vote in the poll. "Sorority Row" took top spot in the poll (70% of your votes), followed in a distant second by "Whiteout" and "9," which were basically tied, at 15% and 13% respectively.

My takeaway is that you readers are on the younger side -- ie below 30, or at least not yet parents -- and that you prefer spectacle to schmaltz. That's definitely an overly broad generalization, but I do find the fact the weekend's biggest earner, by quite a wide margin I might add, didn't even pick up one vote in last week's poll. Now, let's take »

Pittsburgh just got a little more interesting.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has reported that Alfre Woodward (Desperate Housewives) has joined the cast of CBS’s new Pittsburgh based hospital drama Three Rivers. Alfre will play lead doctor Sophia Jordan, who was originally played by Julia Ormond in the pilot.

Three Rivers chronicles the lives of three different worlds. The series also stars among others, Moonlight’s Alex O’Laughlin as Dr. Andy Yablonski and Katherine Moennig as two docs that are could be a little too passionate for the patients, which causes them to butt heads with Dr. Jordan. New Video: 'Potter 6' Featurette, 'Bandslam' Trailer and 'Burning Plain' Int'l Trailer

25 May 2009 2:28 PM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

I hope you are having a relaxing Memorial Day, and if you have a few minutes to kill along the way I have added a few videos recently that I didn't feature in any posts so I figured I would do another triple vid update like the last one. This time around we start with an international trailer for Guillermo Arriaga's (Babel, 21 Grams, Amores perros) The Burning Plain thanks to a heads up from Awards Daily. Arriaga scripted the three films you see next to his name, but this time he steps behind the camera for a film that shot out of the gate at last year's Venice Film Festival only to fizzle shortly thereafter and still is without distribution as a result. The film stars Charlize Theron, Kim Basinger and Joaquim de Almeida and weaves together two storylines taking place in the past and present. Basinger plays Gina, »
