The producer of a forthcoming biopic about former President Dwight Eisenhower has said that he was surprised when attorneys for Sony Pictures TV, which is producing the drama, recently began scrutinizing the script for accuracy -- even though the film is not due to air until next May. "Normally, I would have expected to be left alone about the script because he's dead, and dead men don't sue," Lionel Chetwynd, the film's producer, told today's (Thursday) Boston Globe. However, Sony Pictures TV is the same company that produced The Reagans, which was canceled by CBS earlier this month following protests by Reagan admirers that it presented the former president in an unfavorable light. The Globe also spoke with other "docudrama" producers who expressed concern that film companies and networks will be especially cautious now in the wake of the CBS action. Patricia Clifford, who produced the recent Elizabeth Smart Story for CBS told the Globe: "I think they'll play it safe for awhile, especially on political stories. It's a shame. This has made it more difficult for everybody else."
