New Zealand filmmaker Niki Caro won the top prize of the Toronto Film Festival Sunday night for her first feature, Whale Rider. David Cronenberg took the award for best Canadian feature, Spider. Peter Mullan's The Magdalene Sisters, condemned by the Vatican and the U.S.'s Catholic League, received the Discovery award, voted for by about 750 critics. Today's (Monday) Toronto Globe & Mail commented that distributors were sending representatives to seven or eight screenings a day, "apparently in an effort not to miss the next My Big Fat Greek Wedding."
