Was nominated for Brodway's 2004 Tony Award as Best Actor (Featured Role - Musical) for a revival of "Fiddler on the Roof."

Learned of his 2004 Tony nomination while lying in bed, a blanket covering his head.

His play "Almost, Maine" was inspired by his memories of growing up in Presque Isle. Cariani saw his first play, and first decided to become an actor, at the Portland Stage Company, and that same theatre is where "Almost, Maine" had its 2004 premiere.
