American composer, pianist and author, leader of the ragtime revival, who taught at University of Washington and Queens College, CUNY.
Wrote a dance suite, "Seattle Slew" (1986), named after the famous racehorse.
He was awarded the American National Medal of the Arts by the National Endowment of the Arts in Washington D.C. for his services to music in 2006.
