Delay in Jackson Case -- The Ghost of Oj

14 November 2009 8:50 AM, PST | TMZ | See recent TMZ news »

Michael Jackson's homicide investigation is taking longer than expected because -- as one law enforcement source connected with the case said -- "We've had bad luck with big cases like Oj in the past, and we don't want to repeat those mistakes."The source also pointed to the Robert Blake case, which some experts believe was also botched. But the source added, "There is not a problem with the case. Time is on our side. »

In Cold Blood (Blu-Ray Review)

In Cold Blood on Blu-Ray

Main Feature (2H 14M 29S)

This film is based on the Truman Capote novel of the same name. I have not read that novel so for any of you out there who may have read the novel but have yet to see this film, I am unable to provide a comparison. I also believe that the novel was based on real-life events, so this should certainly interest those who enjoy watching true stories.

The editing is fantastic and the film seamlessly cuts from one conversation or action to another. One phone conversation cuts to a very different phone conversation. One man leans over a basin and this cuts to a different man pulling his head back after splashing his face with water. I have rarely witnessed such smart editing and it’s a shame that most contemporary editors and directors appear to have lost – or »

Would the Real Truman Capote Please Stand Up?

Philip Seymour Hoffman and Catherine Keener in Capote

Photo: Sony Pictures Classics As I said in my What I Watched column on Sunday, I finally got around to watching the 2005 and 2006 Truman Capote films, Capote and Infamous. The first earned five Oscar nominations and one win for Phillip Seymour Hoffman who played the eccentric author to the delight of many. The second was released just over a year later to absolutely no attention whatsoever. This isn't a surprise. Technically Capote is a better film and was deserving of its nomination of Hoffman in the lead role, but to say it is a quality Best Picture candidate, Director or Adapted Screenplay is pushing it, but also comes in large part due to what I perceive to be a poor year in quality film. I mean, Munich was a Best Picture contender and Crash came out on top. Yikes. However, my commentary »

Washington - Dominick Dunne, a writer drawn to chronicling courtroom drama after his daughter was murdered, died Wednesday in New York City, his publisher, Vanity Fair magazine, reported on its website. Dunne, who was 83, was best known for his coverage of the 1995 trial of Oj Simpson, the former football star and actor charged with killing his ex-wife and her male friend. But throughout his life, he took up the cause of prosecuting a number of high celebrity murder suspects including two members of the Kennedy clan, British socialite Claus von Bulow, actor Robert Blake and music producer Phil Spector. TheWrap excerpts the best of Dunne: From the Menendez brothers to O.J. Simpson, he told stories about the stories.

By Wrap Staff

Dominick Dunne had a front-row seat for some of America's most famous trials. Here are some excerpts of stories he wrote for Vanity Fair, from the Claus von Bulow case to Robert Blake.

From "What a Swell Party He Wrote," Vanity Fair, 2008:

"The thought of writing had been lurking within me for some time, but I felt inadequate compared with the two famous writers in my immediate family -- my brother John Gregory Dunne and his wife, Joan Didion.

Bill Pullman: Under Surveillance

18 August 2009 5:33 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Bill Pullman may not be the first person who comes to mind when you think “genre veteran.” But the actor who is perhaps best known for such populist entertainments as Independence Day and While You Were Sleeping has taken a number of cinematic trips to the dark side, most notably under the guidance of the Lynch family. Having starred in David’s 1997 mind-teaser Lost Highway, he now can be seen as the lead in daughter Jennifer’s Surveillance, out this week on DVD and Blu-ray from Magnolia Home Entertainment’s Magnet Pictures banner.

Pullman stars in the film with Julia Ormond as FBI agents Hallaway and Anderson, who arrive at a rural police station to investigate a grisly roadside massacre. A trio of badly shaken witnesses survived the bloody incident, and the particulars of what happened gradually come together through their dramatized recollections as they are separately interviewed. One, a »

What I Watched, What You Watched: Installment #4

16 August 2009 2:46 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Back again with my weekly wrap-up of what I watched that wasn't an upcoming theatrical release, although I will admit this isn't the complete list. There is one old school film I am prepping a review of and there are six others that have something in common with the final title on this list that will be part of a feature article on Monday so I decided not to mention them here. However, I do have four titles for you to chew on. The first two are definite must-sees and the third one I am assuming many of you have already seen, but may have something to say about my comments. As always, after checking out what I watched, add your thoughts in the comments as well as share some of the films you watched recently and suggest future titles for myself and others to add to our Netflix queues, »

Spector faces sentencing in murder

29 May 2009 10:18 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Los Angeles - Six years ago, Phil Spector was barely a blip on the American celebrity radar screen. Although his music lived on, his name and face were only dimly recalled by rock music aficionados until a shooting at his Alhambra mansion propelled him to notoriety. Now he faces sentencing Friday on second-degree murder of actress Lana Clarkson, a conviction that suggests to some that California prosecutors have broken a decades-long string of celebrity murder case losses. The names O.J. Simpson and Robert Blake come to mind. But Spector is in a class of his own. He was not a performer,... »

Coffee and Pie, Oh My!  A chat with Rian Johnson on The Brothers Bloom, Brick and Looper.

14 May 2009 6:04 AM, PDT | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

After the cult success of Rian Johnson‘s debut feature, the stylish high-school noir, Brick, A-list stars and a much bigger budget were sure to follow.  The Brothers Bloom was filmed in a variety European and North American locations and things look fabulously bright and breezy on the big screen.  While I didn’t capital “L” love the picture, there is indeed a lot of interesting things going on and the film is certainly building a following.  Furthermore, there are simply too few grifter pictures (see recent Twitch column on the subject) or classic on-the-road romances (think Charade or The African Queen) these days, even doing one is sort of retro in a way.  The Brothers Bloom aims high for both.  Back in April, I had the chance to sit down with Rian and it turned into a very enjoyable and casual chat that spanned a variety of topics from Ricky Jay to moleskin notebooks, »

Hugh Jackman To Produce, Star in 'Ghostopolis'

3 May 2009 11:49 PM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Wolverine is now a Ghostbuster. Hugh Jackman has been attached to the graphic novel adaptation Ghostopolis, which he will co-produce for Disney, according to Reuters. Ghostopolis is written by Doug TenNapel, and it sounds a bit like Constantine. Jackman would play a government agent charged with returning ghosts to the other side.

That's where the similarity ends, however. The story that interrupts the agent's day to day involves a living boy inadvertently sent to the great beyond, forcing Jackman to team up with a female ghost to get him back. As an added bonus, the agent and the female ghost used to date.

Probably not in a Robert Blake-Ronnie Bakley scenario, though, because that would be awwwkwaaaard. »

Movie Review - 'I Love You, Man'

20 March 2009 12:02 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

I Love You, Man

Starring Paul Rudd, Jason Segel, and Rashida Jones

Directed by John Hamburg

Rated R

Although he has been good in comedies since Clueless, and perhaps more memorably of late thanks to supporting work in Anchorman, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, and Knocked Up, Paul Rudd has proven in the past six months that he should be a comedic lead for a very long time. First it was Role Models, the hit he co-wrote and starred in opposite Seann William Scott. Now, it's the even better I Love You, Man.

Outside of their wardrobes, Rudd is nothing like his Role Models character here. His Peter Klaven is sweet to a fault, respectful, shy, and incredibly awkward.

One particular foible that never gets old is Peter's improvised attempts at sounding cool and laid back. He has a way with words in much the same manner that Robert Blake has a way with the ladies. »

The movie stars Denzel Washington stars as New York City subway dispatcher, whose ordinary day is thrown into chaos by the hijacking of a subway train. John Travolta stars as Ryder, the criminal mastermind who, as leader of a highly-armed gang of four, threatens to execute the train's passengers unless a large ransom is paid within one hour. Robert Blake Takes Social Stab

Robert Blake. As in Baretta the Bum. As in the Emmy winner/ Golden Globe winner who was also the winner of a not-guilty verdict in the murder of his wife Bonnie Lee Bakely, despite testimony that he tried to hire a hit man. As in, oddly enough, the actor whose hottest movie was 1967's "In Cold Blood."

Following release from the can a few years ago, Blake has lain low. Doesn't go places. Isn't seen anywhere. Sunday he made his very first entry into the Hollywood world he once owned. He attended a Super Bowl party. »
