Was a teen idol in Japan.

Quit acting temporarily in the 1980s to pursue a spiritual path. Michael practices Eastern Mysticism.

Has taught acting classes and workshops in Los Angeles.

The "A." before his name stands for nothing.

Universal executives didn't want him to reprise his role as Mike in Phantasm II (1988) because he had been out of movie business for too long. Don Coscarelli strongly supported him and even brought him to audition for the part, but it was ultimately given to James LeGros.

He's a great fan of "Star Trek" (1966).

When he was younger, he went to the International Whistling Competition that takes place every year in North Carolina. He was placed 7th worldwide in the art of whistling.

In addition of acting in numerous commercial as a child, he has recently produced commercials for NASCAR, WNBA and CitiGroup.

Apart from acting and teaching, he also enjoys writing and playing the guitar in his spare time.

He claims he can play pretty much any instrument if he picks it up for five minutes and gives it a try. He even plays a weird instrument called "tambora", a notoriously difficult cousin of the guitar.

He wrote a short story called "Sleep Achiever" that was published by his own mother in handmade miniature book form. It's a short essay-style story about sleeping habits, won some awards and is now in the permanent collection of the Getty Center Library.

He wrote a novel called "The Real Billy Shears". It's about a guy that goes back into time to replace Ringo Starr as one of The Beatles and tries to bump him off.

He's a big fan of jazz music. Among others, he admires Charley Parker and Louis Armstrong.

No relation at all to the Baldwin brothers Alec Baldwin, Daniel Baldwin, William Baldwin and Stephen Baldwin.

He actually learned to drive while working on Phantasm (1979) in the black Plymouth 'Cuda at the age of 14!.

Personal Quotes

We took a promotional trip to Japan when I was in the eighth grade, after Kenny & Company (1976) came out, and when we stepped off the plane it was just like the Beatles. It was awesome. We were chased down the street by 200 screaming Japanese girls and had to dive into a limousine to escape. And then, of course, they swarmed the car. It was great.

I continued being an actor until I was probably 22 or something like that. I did lots of commercials and television and the whole routine. Studied acting, became a musician, and then when all my friends went off to college, I went off and found an Indian guru and lived on an ashram and had a grand time there.

Jazz is America's only original art form.

I don't stay away from them, but I generally don't find myself buying a ticket to a horror film.

[On the cast and crew of the Phantasm series] We get along famously. I mean, we've all known each other forever. I've known Don since I was 11 and he was 19. So that's a long time! And Reggie also, I've known him since I was probably 11 or 12 years old, so we've known each other a long time. It's a fun and funny and goofy kind of atmosphere when we get together because we all sort of get the joke. We are all in on it!! And Angus, he's a very funny and charming gentleman, and always a pleasure.

[On being replaced by James LeGros in Phantasm II (1988)] It's just a case of not getting the job. Of an actor auditioning for a part that of course he thought should have been his and then not getting it. Happens all the time.

I really kind of lost interest in acting because it requires a certain dedication to the business of acting, and I just didn't have the mojo for any more, but I do have a lot of talents and abilities in that area, and I thought to share them sounded like a good idea.

[On Phantasm V (2011)] Of course it will eventually get made. There's no good reason why it wouldn't get made.

Where Are They Now

(March 2005) Living in Austin where he will teach acting.

(February 2008) He is currently teaching acting at his very own school in Austin, Texas.
