The Hollywood Foreign Press Association's Golden Globes Awards Sunday night might have been nicknamed the Opies as Ron Howard's A Beautiful Mind took four top awards: best dramatic film, best actor (Russell Crowe,) best screenplay (Akiva Goldsman) and best supporting actress (Jennifer Connelly.) Ironically, Howard himself was passed over for the director's award, which went to Robert Altman for Gosford Park. Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge was the big winner in the musical/comedy competition, winning for best film, best actress (Nicole Kidman) and best score (Craig Armstrong). Gene Hackman won the best musical/comedy actor award for The Royal Tenenbaums. Conspicuous by its lack of awards was Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, which garnered four nominations but not a single trophy. Another surprise was the selection of the Bosnian film No Man's Land as best foreign-language film. The French hit Amelie had been the odds-on favorite to win in that category.
