Discuss: Should Musicians Become Movie Stars?

16 September 2008 6:02 PM, PDT | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

We're only a few days in, and there's already been a lot of music-themed film news this week -- from word of an Ozzy documentary to Roger Daltry's disappointment with possible scripts for that Keith Moon flick. But those are nothing compared to the little nugget over at MTV. Even without "I'm Going Slightly Mad" on the media player, this tidbit sounds so utterly nuts that it must be discussed.

It seems that way back when, stunt coordinator Joel Kramer went to James Cameron's office to look at storyboards for Terminator 2, and "I was like, 'Jim, these storyboards look just like Billy Idol!' And he was like, 'Yeah, he was my first pick.' But Billy had gotten into a motorcycle accident and broke his leg, so it didn't work out, because he would have to be in lean running shape." Those are storyboards for the T-1000. Yes folks,

Keith Moon Biopic Lacks Script

15 September 2008 10:40 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

Roger Daltrey, frontman for The Who, has disclosed that a hoped-for biopic about the group's late drummer Keith Moon has been held up for more than 15 years because a suitable script has yet to be submitted. Moon, regarded as the group's madcap musician, died of a drug overdose in 1978. In an interview with Billboard magazine, Daltrey said, "When you see the kinds of scripts they've got in mind to make, it's sad." He explained that they have largely resembled the slapstick, low-budget Carry On ... comedies that were popular, primarily in the U.K. from 1958-1976. "If I can keep that from happening, I've done my job," Daltrey said.

'The Rocker' web reviews

20 August 2008 6:39 PM, PDT | From screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news

I have to admit I almost totally forgot about the Wednesday release of Peter Cattaneo's comedy "The Rocker," but I will post my review sometime tomorrow afternoon. In the film, Rainn Wilson stars as a failed rocker who gets a second shot at fame when his nephew asks him to join his high school band. Let's take a look at what the Web's critics have to say about it:

• Mariana McConnell at CinemaBlend: "Relying mostly on sentiment to fill the gaps, 'The Rocker' takes a Keith Moon approach to narrative: big start, big finish, middle doesn’t matter."

• Cinematical's Eric D. Snider: "It's modestly entertaining, occasionally funny, and generally agreeable."

Matt Goldberg at Collider: "A good portion of it is juvenile and Wilson, bless him, throws himself into every humiliation possible while still being lovable enough (barely) that we understand why his bandmates grow to respect him.

Pete & Roger: Who Are You?

17 July 2008 11:32 PM, PDT | From NYPost.com | See recent New York Post news

The Who's upcoming tour is expected to garner the legendary band a cool $100 million, but getting Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey to travel and perform together is turning into a logistical night- mare.

One insider said, "There is a lot of tension and fighting going on right now. Roger is furious with Pete. Pete has been writing all this new material and wants to perform the new stuff, but Roger wants to stick with 'My Generation,' 'Won't Get Fooled Again,' 'Pinball Wizard' and other classics."

Mirren's Moon Regret

2 April 2008 12:14 PM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Dame Helen Mirren turned down the chance to perform onstage with late The Who drummer Keith Moon, after he broke into her West End theatre dressing room.

The British actress was performing in a 1974 London production of a David Hare play, when she was confronted by the hellraiser, who was desperate to perform in her backing band.

She tells U.S. talk show host Conan O'Brien, "I did a play about the rock and roll business called Teeth and Smiles. I was playing the Janis Joplin character.

"One night I was about to go on, and I heard this incredible crashing and banging coming from the ally where the stage door is. I looked out the back, and this completely drunken guy was climbing out of a trash can, covered in trash and with a pin-striped suit on. A complete madman. Then I heard the crashing and banging coming through the stage door, and up the stairs. It stopped outside the dressing room.

"I opened the door and it was Keith Moon. He said, 'Hello darling, I hear you're wonderful in this play.'

"I said, 'It's nice to meet you, but I have to go onstage now.' He said, 'That's all right, I'll come with you. I'll come and play in your band.'

"I'm so idiotic. I said, 'No, you can't.' That's why I'm not rock 'n' roll.

"One of my biggest regrets is that I didn't play onstage with Keith Moon."

The Who To Collect Rock Honour

25 March 2008 7:58 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Veteran rockers The Who will be the only band feted at the upcoming 2008 VH1 Rock Honors event in Los Angeles.

Original members Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend will perform at the 12 July ceremony, alongside acts who'll pay tribute to the British legends.

Bosses at music TV network VH1 have in previous years heralded a number of bands at its Rock Honors event, including Heart, Zz Top and Ozzy Osbourne.

But, at this year's third annual ceremony, The Who will be the only act honoured.

Original band members Keith Moon and John Entwistle died in 1978 and 2002 respectively.
