It was a day no one saw coming. Okay, we did, but not so abruptly. Last night's How I Met Your Mother episode, "Rough Patch," centered around Barney and Robin's bittersweet breakup.
Below, our staff members break down our favorite TV couple's breaking down and much more in our inaugural How I Met Your Mother Round Table. Let's get to it ...
1. What was your favorite How I Met Your Mother quote from last night?
M.L. House: It was more a collection of quotes than one line, but the entire sequence on the "stakeout" - with Marshall constantly complaining about their lack of van, with the faux storm trooper and Alan Thicke of all people along for the ride - slayed me.
Dr. Shepherd: Flashback Barney berating Ted and his then-girlfriend: "Your girlfriend? She's your girl.. friend? She's a girl and a friend? Do not humanize the enemy, Ted!"

Cast and crew of ABC's heavily diluted Witches of Eastwick retread, Eastwick, have just learned that the network will not order more episodes than the original 13 -- meaning we'll soon be bidding a fond adieu to the series most likely pitched as Supernatural Housewives. Sadly, with it goes Paul Gross -- aka Constable Benton Fraser from Due South -- who seems to be rapidly morphing into his generation's Alan Thicke. Also axed by the network: Let's Dance, the Kathy Griffin-hosted reality show in which celebrities re-enact famous dance sequences from the movies. Apparently casting was a major hurdle, as the big top-hat number from A Chorus Line requires more than the severely limited number of Kardashians currently available. On a cheerier note, Christian Slater procedural The Forgotten (no cracks, please) stays with us, for another five episodes at least. [The Feed] »

It was a day we never saw coming (unless you read How I Met Your Mother spoilers on TV Fanatic), but the end of a seemingly perfect televsion relationship, Barman and Robin came to an end this week.
When Ted and Marshall saw how miserable a now overweight Barney and a ghoulish Robin have become with each other, they enlisted the help of the Krakan (aka Lily) to break them up. Using an elaborate plan that involved Crazy Meg, Alan Thicke and a storm trooper, television's best couple came to an end.
So how was "The Rough Patch," the episode that ended it all? While not as funny as previous episodes, it certainly had its moments:
Barney's prerecorded video on ArchiSEXture, including knowing that Marshall would be there? Amazing! Using more future Ted storytelling devices like remembering Barney as fatter than he was and the porn tape accidentally falling into the Vcr? »

Never underestimate the power of the written word. Words have the power to change the world, inspire people, and influence monumental decisions. It doesn’t matter if it’s an internationally bestselling novel, a Pulitzer Prize-winning poem or a pro-bono television article on an online entertainment magazine.
Last week in my review of How I Met Your Mother, I ranted heavily about how a faltering subplot between characters Robin and Barney was wringing the lifeblood from the show and destroying both characters. I claimed if the writers or producers didn’t take immediate action, these problems would sound the death knell for the series.
So imagine my surprise when, one week after writing said article, the show did away with both the carcinogenic storyline and alteration of characters. Most likely this was the plan all along, as television shows are both written and filmed months before their airdates. However, just »

(S05E07) During most episodes of Himym, you tend to forget that this whole show is told from the perspective of Old Ted, who's telling his kids the longest, most boring meet-up story in history of the world. Bob Saget's narration often just goes in one ear and out the other, like the background music. But there are some episodes where the storytelling aspect of the series is firmly in place, with the exaggerations, changes, and bad memories often associated with this activity.
This was one of those episodes. Was Barney really that fat? Was Robin really that haggard? Did Archisexture really accidentally "fly" into Ted's Vcr? Of course not. But those whoppers from Old Ted were what made this episode so entertaining. That and Alan Thicke. But Alan Thicke always makes things entertaining; he's Alan Thicke, for crissakes.

The first television show I remember as a kid having a "very special spooky Halloween episode" was Growing Pains, a show I adored as a child ... until I had a real-life run-in with cast member Alan Thicke that left a bitter taste in my mouth. I won't go into details, but let's just say the man needs to learn some manners. (I'm still not finished with you, Thicke.) So, that and Kirk Cameron turning into a Crocoduck-picture-waving nutjob (seriously, look it up) pretty much spoiled that for me. But, my goodness, do I digress! The point is that, in my humble opinion, television shows often give us their year's best episodes when catering All Hallow's Eve, so let's take a look at some of the best. The Simpsons' Treehouse of Horror I was so young when the first of what was to become a series of Halloween Simpsons episodes that I was actually scared. »

Barney packs on the pounds for the November 9 new episode of How I Met Your Mother and Alan Thicke guest stars on the show to connect his Canadianness with Robin's Canadianness (yes, I'm aware that 'Canadianness' not a word). CBS has released a short synopsis and some promo photos.
Alan Thicke ("Growing Pains") will guest star as himself in an upcoming episode titled "The Rough Patch" of How I Met Your Mother to be broadcast on the CBS Television Network.
After Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) and Robin (Cobie Smulders) hit a rough patch in their relationship, Lily (Alyson Hannigan) tries to break them up, calling in Alan Thicke for help.
Thicke previously guest starred on How I Met Your Mother as Robin's father in her music video "Sandcastles in the Sand."

Alan Thicke beamed into living rooms week after week in the '80s as therapist Jason Seaver, the patriarch of the sitcom "Growing Pains." Two decades later, his son Robin is taking up the family business with the release of his latest album, Sex Therapy.
"What is the inspiration for Sex Therapy?" Robin asked MTV News on the Los Angeles set of the music video for the album's single of the same name. "Well, are you stressed out? Overworked? Wound up? Uptight? Sex Therapy is what you need. It's coming soon — December 8 — courtesy of yours truly, Robin Thicke."

Kirk Cameron sure has grown a lot closer to the Lord since he was under the watchful eye of Alan Thicke on Growing Pains. But what would Dr. Seaver think about little Mike passing out altered versions of Charles Darwin’s Origin of Species at universities across the country to protest the 150th anniversary of the publishing of the book? Would Dr. Seaver agree with Mike‘s postulation that Adolf Hitler is directly connected to the theory of evolution? Or would he dismiss it as nonsense and ground him? Only time will tell. But, in the meantime, if you know where to get an advanced copy of the “very special” Origin of Species, let us know in the comments. »

Kirk Cameron seems like a really nice guy. Unfortunately, the Artist Formerly Known as Mike Seaver seems like a really nice guy who's evolved into a willfully ignorant idiot. If you haven't seen the new and improved edition of Charles Darwin's "On The Origin of The Species" that Alan Thicke's arguably best-known TV son is currently pushing, check it out here on Huffington Post. Sure, Kirk's wrong as hell and working awfully hard to spread disinformation. On the other hand, his work here represents perhaps his most subtle and shaded performances ever. The Goods: Live Hard. Sell Hard.
Directed by: Neal Brennan
Cast: Jeremy Piven, Ed Helms, Ving Rhames, James Brolin, David Koechner, Kathryn Hahn, Alan Thicke
Running Time: 1 hr 30 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: August 14, 2009
Plot: A notorious fast-talking traveling salesman (Piven) must help an auto lot sell their cars before they are bought out by their competitor.
Who’s It For? As much as the film is profane, its tired humor would fit better in a PG-13 arena for those who consider jokes about men hitting on other men to still be funny. But considering how bad this movie is, The Goods probably won’t be enjoyed by any patron over the age of 17 unless they enter with bottom-dollar expectations.
Expectations: Even after seeing the film’s not so funny preview constantly at the movies this summer, there were still hopes this would be a breezy mid-August comedy with odd, »

The Goods: Live Hard. Sell Hard.
Starring Jeremy Piven, Ving Rhames, Ed Helms, and James Brolin
Directed by Neal Brennan
Rated R
Star vehicles, by definition, depend on the appeal of their stars. So, before you pay to see The Goods: Live Hard. Sell Hard., you should ask yourself how much you like Jeremy Piven. The Entourage Emmy winner is a used car salesman savant named Don Ready. He's as abrasive like Piven's Ari Gold, only in worse clothes. But if this is all Piven's got, haven't we seen it already?
Unfortunately, even though there's a good cast of likely and unlikely comic heroes mingling the used car lot, Piven gets most of the funny. And that's where this one bottlenecks.
It's not that Piven isn't funny or can't be funny, but in The Goods, it's one note over and over again. That note isn't all that funny to begin with, »

Somewhere along the way, it seems the studios forgot that summertime is not only a time for big crazy robots and unrelenting action, but outrageous comedy as well. One might suggest the incredible success of The Hangover could be due to a severe lack of comedic films at the box office this summer, but there is a very worthy contender to The Hangover's summer comedic throne in The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard - a film that makes The Hangover look like Sesame Street.
Jeremy Piven leads this all-star cast and we were able to speak exclusively with Piven along with David Koechner, Rob Riggle, Ken Jeong (a.k.a. Dr. Ken), Craig Robinson, Ed Helms and Alan Thicke about the most outrageous comedy of the year. Click below for our exclusive video interviews with this comedic dream team.

This is not the same Ed Helms we saw earlier this summer in "The Hangover." Maybe it's close to what his character became by the end of that movie, but this guys looks much cleaner, much slicker. He looks like a shark. I'm fairly certain that's the point too, as Helms will play the son of a rival car dealer out to screw over the competition in this Friday's "The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard."
I'll admit, "District 9" has kept this summer comedy more off my radar than it should be. As an avid "Entourage" watcher, I'm a big fan of Jeremy Piven. Helms joined Zach Galifianakis in stealing the show in "The Hangover," and the duo are joined by an excellent cast which includes Ving Rhames, David Koechner ("Anchorman"), James Brolin, Alan Thicke, Tony Hale and Kathryn Hahn. Check out the full poster after the jump.

First of, have I told you how much I love this film? It's Super-funny! But, the greatest comedies have underlying tones of despair, and the characters in "The Goods" certainly have lots of those, hence, the funnies :happy
Make it the super funnies!
From the folks who gave us "Talladega Nights" and "Stepbrothers," "The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard" is one of the best comedies of the summer, perhaps the year!
Directed by Neil Brennan from the script by Andy Stock and Rick Stempson, this film ain't a clunker! Paramount has great timing with the whole Cash for Clunkers program.
You'll find a new, perhaps, respect for used car salesman! "The Goods" opens this Friday, Aug. 14th, so don't miss it!
So I attended the press junket for "The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard" and sat down with the cast. Here they are (click on pictures to see video): »
