With Mike Myers' career as a box office superstar mining comedy gold with each new film sputtering if not beginning to nose dive into terra firma, Ryan Zeinert at Film Wad has put together an excellent study on the moment in time when 15 famous comedians "lost their funny."
I was immediately drawn to this for several reasons, chief among them that I use funny as a noun, as in "bring the funny," "lost their funny," etc. In fact, when saying pretty much the same thing we're discussing here back on May 20th, I said Myers was "fresh out of funny."
Also, many years ago, one of my friends theorized that musicians tend to go downhill after their first greatest hits album. There are a couple of exceptions, like The Eagles and Elton John, both of whom had some of their best songs pop up on later albums.

The second annual American Idol charity show, Idol Gives Back, saw its audience decline from last year Wednesday night even as an all-star list of personalities appeared on the show, urging viewers to help the disadvantaged at home and overseas. The primetime portion of the show between 8:00 p.m. and and 10:00 p.m. (it began at 7:30 p.m.) averaged 17.5 million viewers versus last year's 26.9 million. The final hour averaged 18.1 million. Among those pitching for contributions were Brad Pitt, Fergie, Miley Cyrus, Tyra Banks, David Spade, The Jonas Brothers, Reese Witherspoon, Gloria Estefan, Billy Crystal, Victoria and David Beckham, Bono, and former Idol contestant Daughtry, now a recording star in his own right. So many entertainment celebrities participated that the three major presidential candidates, who had each taped appeals, were bumped to tonight's (Thursday) special telecast. (New York Times TV critic Alessandra Stanley commented, "Idol Gives Back would have given the politicians an opportunity to link themselves to the stronger allure of celebrities and their high-wattage charitable causes. But American Idol producers evidently felt that the candidates didn't have the same cachet.")

Chris Farley's celebrity friends Chevy Chase and David Spade tried desperately to save the actor from his drug addiction before he died of an overdose, a new book reveals.
Actor pals Chase and Spade reveal the tactics they used to shock Farley into kicking his out-of-control habit in The Last Days of Chris Farley - written by the tragic star's brother Tom Farley and Tanner Colby.
Chase says, "(I told him) look, you're not John Belushi. And when you overdose or kill yourself, you will not have the same acclaim that John did. You'll be a blip in the New York Times obituary page, and that'll be it. Is that what you want?"
And Spade claims he was blamed for his Tommy Boy co-star's death: "I got a lot of s**t at the end about, 'Why weren't you there for him?' But being that close, I dealt with it all the time. And in that situation, before the guy's dead, he's just kind of an asshole. Truth is, you get a junkie who's wasted all the time and moody and angry and trying to knock you around, you say, 'Ok, you go do that and I'll be over here.'"
Farley died from an overdose in 1997 at the age of 33.
