DVD Round Up, Oct. 30, 2009: ‘Sauna,’ ‘The Tournament,’ ‘The Butcher’

30 October 2009 5:00 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Many editions of the DVD Round-Up have featured a different genre and focus for each title within it. This week seems a little more thematically linked as we have a trio of foreign horror films and a few more independent films than usual. Of course, there has to a holiday comedy to spice things up.

Consider this column informational with synopsis, tech specs, and special features info for titles that might go otherwise unnoticed, but if you’re looking for more critical opinion, we covered “Sauna” when it played at the EU Film Fest, “Medicine For Melancholy” when it was available on IFC Direct, and “Nothing Like the Holidays” when it played in theaters.

“P” and “The Tournament” were released on October 20th, 2009

“The Butcher,” “Medicine For Melancholy,” “Nothing Like the Holidays,” and “Sauna” were released on October 27th, 2009

Trailer: Serious Moonlight

16 October 2009 3:38 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

I’ve not seen Meg Ryan in a movie for a fair while now although I think she was most recently in The Women starring alongside Eva Mendes, Debra Messing and Jada Pinkett Smith. It seems ages since the glory days when she was an A-Lister and quite possibly the biggest actress in Hollywood. Her latest movie is called Serious Moonlight and has been released on Yahoo today. It also stars Timothy Hutton, Justin Long, Kristen Bell and is directed by Cheryl Hines.

After she arrives at her country home for a romantic weekend getaway, things don’t go exactly as planned for high-powered Manhattan lawyer Louise. First, her husband of 13 years, Ian, tells her that he’s leaving her for a younger woman. Then, one thing leads to another, and pretty soon Ian finds himself held captive by an oddly cool Louise who explains that she won’t release »

9 October 2009 9:30 AM, PDT | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

Autumn has begun, and while that means colorful displays of nature's brilliance and smells of cider for some parts of America, in the world of television that means TBS will start overwhelming us with wave after wave of network promo spots. Most of the year, TBS is a repository for Seinfeld reruns and Debra Messing film vehicles, but occasionally they bust out some new programming. Last year it was Frank Caliendo's cavalcade of Frank Caliendos. This year, it's George Lopez. Lopez Tonight does not premiere until November 9, but it's never to early to have the audience pleading for a show to start so the interminable promos can stop. Grab your glove, it's time to catch some buzz. »

Blake Lively arrives at the 2009 Emmy awards in Los Angeles, California on Sunday

If the VMAs were all about silver sparkle last weekend, then Sunday night's Emmy Awards were all about looking hot in red and white. While some actresses, including Alyson Hannigan and Tina Fey, embraced black, a bevy of starlets went with the night's trendy colors.

Blake Lively, Hayden Panettiere, Emmy winner Toni Collette, "Fringe" star Anna Torv and Debra Messing were just a few of the ladies who donned their best shades of red for the show. Some, like Messing, Panettiere and Collette, wore it well — most of all Collette, whose flouncy skirt floated as she went onstage to receive her award. But others, including Lively and Mila Kunis, wearing deep scarlet, appeared awkward in their gowns. »

Emmys Trend: The Right to Bare Arm

20 September 2009 9:25 PM, PDT | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

There were baby bumps and plunging necklines on the Emmys red carpet, but only one real question. To bare or not to bare (a shoulder)? Stars showing off their left clavicles included Patricia Arquette, Hayden Panettiere in a poppy-hued J. Mendel, Chloë Sevigny in a shower-curtain inspired silhouette and Kim Kardashian. Kim's Ina Soltani silk gown had to be sewn back on backstage after she tweeted about a popped zipper. It seems as if more than just her shoulder was trying to break free. In the right clavicle camp were Debra Messing in a red (the one big color trend of the night) column gown by Michael Kors, Olivia Wilde, Mary-Louise Parker and Lindsay Price. The final tally?... »
