Sam And Dave Man Says Movie Producers Ripped Him Off

24 September 2008 10:38 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

Sam Moore, half the 1960s R&B duo Sam & Dave, says he is considering suing the produers of the upcoming Soul Men, starring Samuel L. Jackson and the late Bernie Mac, which opens on Oct. 24. In an interview with the New York Daily News, Moore charged that the movie ripped off his career with Dave Prater, who died in 1988. He noted that he had heard that the movie features a reunion concert like the one that he and Prater had in 1982 after not speaking for years. "Sam Jackson and Bernie Mac sing 'Hold On, I'm Coming,'" he added. "That's also our song." However, David Friendly, who produced the movie says it's copletely fictional. "I think it's unfair of [Moore] to criticize a movie he hasn't seen."

Moore Furious Over Soul Men Movie

24 September 2008 9:09 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Producers of Samuel L. Jackson and late comic Bernie Mac's film Soul Men have brushed off claims the movie is based on legendary musician Sam Moore, after the furious soul singer threatened legal action.

Jackson and Mac play an estranged R+B duo in the movie - a plot Moore claims is too similar to his own career with late musician Dave Prater.

Moore, 72, admits he has yet to see the film, but claims he was informed by unnamed sources that producers used his music to set the mood for scenes in the film, reports the New York Daily News.

He tells the newspaper: "In the movie, they have a reunion concert. Dave and I had a reunion in 1982 after not talking with each other for years.

"Sam Jackson and Bernie Mac sing Hold On, I'm Coming. That's also our song."

The singer also claims production company bosses at Dimension Films "tried to buy me out" with a $1,000 (GBP541) offer for a walk-on role.

Disappointed with the offer and the use of the N-word in the film, Moore says he is consulting lawyers about the project, adding: "A thousand dollars! Whoa. You know, slavery times have ended.

"Even when Dave and I were fighting and cursing, we never used that (the N) word. It's an insult to every one of us who fought in the civil rights movement.

"I don't understand how this can happen. It's not right."

But producer David Friendly has denied a direct link to Moore in the film, insisting the story is completely fictional.

He says: "Everything in the movie is completely made up. The characters are back-up singers, unlike Sam and Dave, who were headliners. (Producer) Bob Weinstein's brother Harvey Weinstein suggested at a party that Sam might be in the movie. But Sam declined the offer. No money was ever discussed. Just because they sing one Sam and Dave song doesn't make it a movie about them. I think it's unfair of (Moore) to criticise a movie he hasn't seen."

The film premieres at New York's famed Apollo on 24 October.

Interview: Samuel L. Jackson

17 September 2008 6:55 AM, PDT | From cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news

There's not much that's better than sitting down to talk to Samuel L. Jackson, who never seems afraid to say exactly what he thinks. But then, there's not much worse than realizing afterwards that your recorder cut out halfway through. But that's how it went when I talked to the Lakeview Terrace star earlier this week-- the recorder died right as he had started to talk about working with his old friend Bernie Mac on Soul Men, describing how Mac would "entertain the troops" after the scene had wrapped-- "Bernie never met a microphone he didn't like," as Jackson put it. But hey, the recorder did hang on to Jackson's description of a Japanese ceremony to bless his Afro-Samurai project, which included the oldest geishas in Japan. And we also talked about his role in Lakeview Terrace, a racist cop frequently on the wrong side of the law, who Jackson

The first poster for Soul Men has been released. Yes, they resisted the temptation to squeeze Isaac Hayes onto it. Thank god. Though Hayes probably only has a cameo, this is the movie that both Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes did before they both died. That will get people in seats. Thankfully, it also looks like it might be kind of good. Sam Jackson and Bernie Mac play aging soul men trying to get the band back together to honor their recently deceased band leader. Samuel L. Jackson and Bernie Mac Team Up in 'Soul Men' Trailer

6 September 2008 7:32 AM, PDT | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

Filed under: Comedy, Music & Musicals, Trailers and Clips

What a pity it is that we lost both comedian Bernie Mac and musician Isaac Hayes in such short order, and what a stroke of good fortune that they both happened to have completed their roles in the upcoming comedy, Soul Men, in which Mac's character tries to get Samuel L. Jackson to join him for a televised reunion concert.

Yahoo! Movies has released the trailer for the film, and it reflects both the best tendencies of director Malcolm D. Lee and his worst as a writer (though he isn't credited as one here). There's the good-natured nostalgia of something like 2005's Roll Bounce, balanced out with the mean-spirited and utterly un-hilarious antics of this year's Welcome Home, Roscoe Jenkins (I'm sure that if there could've been room for Jennifer Coolidge in that gem, she would've removed her dentures for fellatio there instead).

Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes' Soul Men Trailer

5 September 2008 9:40 PM, PDT | From firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news

The first trailer for the comedy Soul Men has hit and it's almost sad to watch, considering two of the film's prominent cast members passed away quite recently. The story doesn't help lighten the mood either: in honor of their recently deceased band leader, two estranged soul-singing legends (played by Bernie Mac and Samuel Jackson) decide to put on a reunion performance at the Apollo Theater. Unfortunately this trailer looks terrible, but maybe that's because it's not my type of humor. This has definitely gained buzz by being Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes' last big film together. So without any further ado, take a look below. Trailer - 'Soul Men' with Samuel L. Jackson and the Late Bernie Mac

5 September 2008 8:57 PM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

It was indeed sad to hear that both Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes had passed away so suddenly and within 36 hours of each other. Then I learned, as many others did, that they're both in Soul Men, which opens this November.

The title is a tip of that to the song "Soul Man," of course, but how many people knew that's actually an Isaac Hayes tune? Sam & Dave performed it back in the 1960s, though to the majority of us, the version recorded by The Blues Brothers is the one stuck in our heads from time to time.

Making it all the more bittersweet is that the movie is about a pair of singers who reunite 20 years after their last performance to honor the memory of their former bandleader, who has just passed away.

There's a trailer for the film now, which co-stars Samuel L. Jackson and is directed by Spike's cousin,

Cheadle Pays Tribute To Late Comic Mac

25 August 2008 12:05 PM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Actor Don Cheadle has paid tribute to his former co-star Bernie Mac following the comedian's tragic death earlier this month.

Cheadle starred alongside Mac - real name Bernard Jeffrey McCullough - in two episodes of the comedian's hit TV show in 2002.

He remembers, "The best thing about Bernie is that he was happiest when the people around him were happy. That's a real testament to the kind of generosity that he had.

"I did his show, and my character had all of the laugh lines, and I had all of the flashy things to do, and I said, 'Hey Bernie, is this cool? I've got all the funny stuff to do.' And he said, 'Look man, if you want to slide in behind me and do the splits, I'll stand behind you and do the dips. It's okay, do your thing.'

"I think that's a real testament to who Bernie was - he shined when everybody else shined. He was really generous."

Mac died on 9 August after losing his battle with pneumonia.

Mac Missed Out On His Greatest Film Role

25 August 2008 6:56 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Funnyman Bernie Mac missed out on seeing the movie that friends feel sure will cement his reputation as a bona fide film star - because he fell ill before a finished print was complete.

Soul Men co-star Samuel L. Jackson insists the late comedian would have been proud of his final film - because he was great in it.

The Pulp Fiction star, who recently attended Mac's funeral in Chicago, Illinois says, "He's awesome in the film. I saw it a week before he passed. I was talking to his manager, who said he never got a chance to see it.

"That's a tragedy because it's one of the best things he's ever done. It's the Bernie we know and it's the Bernie we love."

Jackson warns Mac fans that the funnyman looks a little ill in the movie: "Bernie was thinner because he'd been sick off and on for a while, so he wasn't that (American) football-looking guy that I used to know."

Mac died on 9 August after losing his battle with pneumonia.

Latest James Bond Flick Bumped Back a Week

In what appears to be part of a most thorough campaign to botch Entertainment Weekly's Fall Movie Preview, a recent press release wholly admits that the North American opening of the 22nd James Bond film, Quantum of Solace, back from November 7th to the 14th marks an effort to capitalize on last week's sudden Harry Potter shift.

Although the removal of the 007th from any coming marketing blitz sure is a shame, it does place this film closer to the release of its predecessor, Casino Royale, which opened on November 17, 2006 to the tune of almost $600 million worldwide. Solace will still premiere in the United Kingdom on October 31.
