18 July 2008 1:43 AM, PDT | From Digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news

Penelope Cruz has admitted that her relationships end because of her own inner demons. In the latest issue of W magazine, the Spanish actress claimed that her failed romances with Matthew McConaughey and Tom Cruise were down to an angry inner voice that she has tried to control since childhood. She said: "I'm always finding very tricky and hidden ways to sabotage any beautiful moment. And it's something so internal that I don't think even my friends (more)

Cruz's Monster Ruins Magical Moments

17 July 2008 6:44 PM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Spanish actress Penelope Cruz has a "monster" that ruins her romances.

In a new magazine article, the Vanilla Sky star has hinted that her failed relationships with Matthew McConaughey and Tom Cruise were wrecked by her gloomy alter-ego, which has spoiled magical moments ever since she was a child.

Cruz, who is now dating fellow Spaniard Javier Bardem, tells W magazine she calls her angry inner voice "the monster" and has spent her life trying to control it.

She says, "I'm always finding very tricky and hidden ways to sabotage any beautiful moment. And it's something so internal that I don't think even my friends or family can catch me doing it. But I catch myself doing it.

"I've had that battle since I was a little girl. It's like, `Uh-oh, here it is again, the monster! Go away and leave me alone!'

"With time, you get more at peace with it. I used to get very upset about it, and very angry at myself. But now, when it comes, I just send it away."

Allen Lets Lovers Cruz + Bardem Babble In Spanish

17 July 2008 6:59 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Woody Allen was so comfortable with his Vicky Cristina Barcelona co-stars Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz he let them ad-lib scenes in Spanish - even though he couldn't understand them.

The moviemaker could only stand back and hope the real-life couple weren't dissing him, swearing or being inappropriate as the cameras rolled.

He says, "They were just acting up a storm, and I had no idea what they were saying. I just thought, `I'm sure it's great.'"

Penelope Cruz is keen to follow best pal Salma Hayek's example and start a family.

The Spanish star has considered adopting a child for many years and now she's planning to take the time to get serious.

The actress, who is dating fellow Spaniard Javier Bardem, tells W magazine, "It's something I've thought about a lot... I feel like I still have a lot of time."

And, before she becomes a mum, Cruz hopes to follow former boyfriend Matthew McConaughey's lead and start backpacking around the world.

The 34 year old says, "I've never done that. I've travelled to so many countries for work, and I realise when I leave that I haven't seen anything."

Cruz Takes Aim At 'Unacceptable' Spanish Media

17 July 2008 5:15 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Actress Penelope Cruz fears for her life every time she steps out in her native Spain because aggressive cameramen follow her every move.

The Vanilla Sky star believes dating a fellow Spanish star, Javier Bardem, and the increase of "cheap" celebrity news shows have turned her into a media target.

Cruz, who lives near the Spanish capital Madrid, reveals camera crews regularly camp out on her doorstep, awaiting any footage they can get of her with Bardem.

She says, "In Spain these TV shows are on for maybe 17 hours a day. They are very cheap to make because they just have somebody running after people in the street with a camera, provoking them, insulting them.

"They are waiting for more and more drama... Unless they have a dead body in front of them, it's not enough. I mean, it is just beyond crazy and completely unacceptable."

Cruz Still Haunted By Desperate Days At The Sunset Marquis

16 July 2008 11:53 PM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Penelope Cruz hates revisiting Los Angeles hang-out the Sunset Marquis because the hotel reminds her of the dark days of her first trip to Hollywood.

The Spanish actress stayed there with two stray cat pets while she was shooting her first English-language film The Hi-Lo Country and admits she was lonely and miserable.

Still trying to master English, the Vanilla Sky star admits she found it tough to make friends.

She tells W magazine, "Many times I would pick up the phone and realise there was no one to call because I didn't have any friends."

The experience means a trip back to the Sunset Marquis to meet friends or directors is never one she enjoys.

She explains, "I cannot even look at those rooms now. I have a weird physical reaction. Everything comes back from those years."

Wicked: The Movie?

15 July 2008 6:29 PM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Smash-hit Broadway musical Wicked is set to become the latest stageshow to be turned into a major movie.

Hot on the heels of Chicago, Hairspray and Mamma Mia!, the Wizard of Oz-related musical is to be turned a new Universal film, with producers Marc Platt and Stephen Schwartz.

But Universal boss Donna Langley insists fans will have to wait some time to see the film - because Platt and Schwarz are determined to take their time to ensure the movie repeats the success of the New York show that inspired the project.

Langley tells Variety magazine, "Our goal now is absolutely to make the Wicked film, but... Marc and Stephen Schwartz are very mindful of the right timing. But we're dying to do it."

Platt is currently working on the movie version of the musical Nine, starring Nicole Kidman, Daniel Day-Lewis and Penelope Cruz.

Hudson's Nine Role Created Just For Her

15 July 2008 10:05 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Latest: The role Kate Hudson will play in her movie musical debut was written especially for her.

Her Nine character - a Vogue magazine writer called Stephanie - didn't feature in the original Broadway show

Director Rob Marshall explains, "Her revelatory skills as a singer and a dancer lead to the creation of the role."

Nine composer Maury Yeston has even written a new song just for Hudson.

The actress will join Daniel Day-Lewis, Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard, Dame Judi Dench and Sophia Loren in the film adaptation of the hit show, inspired by Federico Fellini's autobiographical film 8 1/2.

Javier Bardem and Catherine Zeta-Jones have already quit the project - making way for Day-Lewis and Kidman respectively.

Allen's Producer Joffe Dies

15 July 2008 5:08 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Woody Allen's manager and co-producer Charles Joffe has died. He was 78.

Joffe passed away at Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on Wednesday, following a long illness.

He had helped shape the careers of many high profile comedians including Robin Williams, Billy Crystal and Lenny Bruce, and signed Allen to his New York-based agency when the funnyman was an unknown writer.

With Joffe's help, Allen negotiated his first movie deal for 1965's What's New Pussycat - writing and starring in the film.

And in 1969 Joffe began to produce Allen's films, working alongside the Hollywood legend right up until his most recent release - this year's Vicky Cristina Barcelona starring Penelope Cruz and Scarlett Johansson.

Joffe is survived by his wife, Carol.

Kate Hudson Adds One More to 'Nine'

14 July 2008 4:29 PM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

We checked our handy e-mail inbox today to find a note from The Weinstein Company that trumpets the addition of Kate Hudson to the cast of the musical Nine, which will be released next year. To get the full story of Nine you have to go back over 25 years to when the play debuted on Broadway. That musical won the Tony, and the 2003 revival did, too, although to John Q. Public, his wife, and 1.2 children, Nine is not Cats or Phantom of the Opera.

I don't believe you could find anyone more suited to move this play to the screen than Rob Marshall, who directed Chicago, which is unfairly criticized as being an awful movie, or at least, a bad Oscar winner. It's quite difficult to make musical theatre into musical film, especially in a more cynical contemporary film market. The same people who say they hate musicals these days

'Vicky Cristina Barcelona' gets new trailer

18 June 2008 5:45 AM, PDT | From screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news

Our quick thoughts: One thing is certain, Woody Allen’s next film comes with an interesting Spanish flair. Just days after the release of the first official poster for “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” the first trailer for the film has popped up at Yahoo! Movies. And just like the one-sheet, the first footage looks awesome.

Scarlett Johansson and Rebecca Hall star as two friends who fall for a charming painter (Javier Bardem) during a vacation in Spain. Little do they know they’ll have to compete with the artist’s ex-wife, played by Penelope Cruz.

I can’t say I absolutely loved Allen’s latest films, but this trailer definitely makes me want to see more of “Barcelona.” Sexy music, great landscapes, solid comedy and an A-list cast - this trailer promises it all. Enjoy.

Freaky quote: “We’ll eat well, we’ll drink good wine, we’ll make love.” – Javier Bardem

First poster for ‘Vicky Cristina Barcelona’!

17 June 2008 7:36 AM, PDT | From screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news

Woody Allen’s “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” is scheduled to open Sept. 5, 2008, and Cinematical just posted the first official poster, which you can see below. I think it’s a pretty simple poster, but there’s something about it that intrigues me. Maybe it’s the framing, or the fact that they all have their eyes closed.

Scarlett Johansson and Rebecca Hall star as two girlfriends who, during their vacation in Spain, fall for a charming painter played by Javier Bardem. Little do they know that his ex-wife (Penelope Cruz) is also back in the race for his heart. Patricia Clarkson, Chris Messina and Kevin Dunn co-star.

10 June 2008 4:51 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Italian actress Sophia Loren is using her role in forthcoming screen musical Nine to help her recover from the death of her husband.

Loren's partner of more than 40 years, Carlo Ponti, died last year at the age of 94, and the actress admits she was devastated by the loss.

But the 73-year-old is convinced that her appearance in the Hollywood adaptation of the Broadway show will finally help her feel happy again.

She says, "I met him (Ponti) when I was 15; we were together for a lifetime, it's so sad for me.

"To be in an American musical is the dream of my life. Musicals make you feel alive. I can't wait to start."

Loren will star alongside Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard, Nicole Kidman and Dame Judi Dench in the Rob Marshall-directed movie, which is scheduled to begin production later this year.

Allen Slams Sex Rumours

6 June 2008 5:09 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Woody Allen has denied rumours of racy sex scenes between Penelope Cruz and Scarlett Johansson in upcoming movie Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

Johansson and Cruz appear in a steamy scene together as well as taking part in a threesome with Spanish actor Javier Bardem, according to reports.

The director admits that the film does feature a lesbian clinch - but "not in the sense that they're (the press) suggesting."

And the 72-year-old dismisses claims that it is "steamy", telling Britain's Empire magazine, "There's no truth comparable to anything you've read. There's the barest smidgeon of sex in it.

"There are sex scenes between all the characters in the movie: between the men and the women, and the women and the women. That is accurate, but I'd say there's probably not even 20 seconds of sex in the whole picture."

Johansson Denies Premiere Snub

20 May 2008 4:58 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Latest: Scarlett Johansson has denied she snubbed the premiere of Woody Allen's latest movie Vicky Cristina Barcelona because movie bosses refused to cater to her diva demands.

The blonde beauty - who stars in the new film alongside Penelope Cruz - was expected to grace the red carpet at the Cannes International Film Festival on Saturday, but was noticeably absent from the prestigious premiere.

And Johansson was soon at the centre of rumours that movie chiefs at the French arm of Warner Bros Films - the production's distributors - denied her extravagant hospitality expectations, including a $8,000 (GBP4,000) a day make-up artist.

But the actress has hit back at the claims, with her representative telling New York gossip column PageSix that she was only absent due to unavoidable "scheduling conflicts".

Fishburne To Bring The Alchemist To The Big Screen

19 May 2008 5:08 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

The Matrix star Laurence Fishburne is set to bring best-selling book The Alchemist to the big screen - directing and starring in a new Hollywood adaptation.

Fishburne has teamed up with movie mogul Harvey Weinstein to get the $60 million (GBP30 million) project into production.

The tome, by Paul Coehlo, which has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide and has been translated into 67 languages, focuses on the story of a shepherd boy who travels across the Egyptian desert in search of treasure, but meets an alchemist who teaches him the meaning of life.

And Weinstein believes the movie's themes could help heal rifts between the Western world and the Middle East.

Speaking at the Cannes Film Festival, he says, "It is a book I have been truly inspired by and I have agreed to personally produce it. The Alchemist is simple and spiritual, and the screenplay will reflect that. The book means so much to people on a spiritual level yet there is also a great love story in it. It is an incredibly moving, emotional story.

"I think this story will act as a bridge to the Middle East. In the Middle East, the book has been an overwhelming success. That is a world that we need to know more about an extend a bridge to. This movie could be a healer in that region, bringing the West and the East together, especially the Middle East."

Fishburne is set to play the alchemist of the title, and Weinstein is keen to cast Penelope Cruz in his latest project: "One way or another I'm finding a part for Penelope Cruz."

Johansson Snubs Cannes Premiere

19 May 2008 12:06 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Scarlett Johansson snubbed the premiere of Woody Allen's latest movie Vicky Cristina Barcelona at the Cannes International Film Festival after movies bosses reportedly refused to cater to her diva demands.

The blonde beauty - who stars in the new movie alongside Penelope Cruz - was expected to grace the red carpet at the French festival on Saturday, but missed the prestigious premiere amid rumours movie bosses at the French arm of Warner Bros Films - the production's distributors - reportedly denied her extravagant hospitality expectations.

According to British newspaper the Daily Mail, the Lost In Translation star made a string of demands to ensure her appearance at the renowned festival - including a $8,000 (GBP4,000) a day make-up artist.

Reports also suggest Johansson was unwilling to stay at a luxurious central Cannes hotel with director Allen and co-star Penelope Cruz, preferring a suite at a hotel 30 miles away.

A source tells the publication, "While Woody's terribly fond of Scarlett, he was a little upset that she wasn't being a team player."

Johansson's male-star, Spanish Oscar-winner Javier Bardem, also missed the movie's Cannes premiere on Saturday, citing personal family reasons for his non-appearance.

Allen Defends Set Location Of Vicky Cristina Barcelona

18 May 2008 4:14 PM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Director Woody Allen has defended his decision to shoot his latest movie Vicky Cristina Barcelona in Spain, insisting he would have filmed in any European city, had he been offered the opportunity.

The 72-year-old filmmaker has come under attack from local officials in Barcelona, who claimed he had received 1 million euros ($1.6 million/GBP800,000) from the city's administration towards the funding of the project - which stars Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz and Scarlett Johansson.

But, speaking at the movie's premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in France on Saturday, he denied the allegations, admitting he would have filmed in any European city, had he been approached to do so.

He says, "People from (distribution company Mediapro in) Barcelona called and said if I was interested in making a film there, they would finance it, so I said, 'Sure'. If someone had called me from Rome or Venice or Stockholm or God knows where, I probably would have agreed to it just as readily.

"But this was a golden opportunity for me, because I happen to have a particular fondness for a number of cities in Spain, and Barcelona certainly is one of my favorites."

However, Allen admits there is one destination in Europe he would never return to, after a bad experience in St. Petersburg, Russia, when the city was formerly known as Leningrad.

He recalls, "I was planning on being there for five days, and I was there for about two hours, and I went to the travel agent in town and I said, 'Get me the first reservation out of here. I don't care where it goes.'

"I had a terrible, terrible time there, and I haven't been back since then. And I'm told that it's greatly changed since then, but it would take a lot, because I'm a fearful traveler, and it would take a lot to get me back to Russia."
