Darren Aronofsky Almost Confirmed for RoboCop Reboot

17 July 2008 12:30 PM, PDT | From firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news

Since the passing mention of a new RoboCop film in an MGM press release back in March, not much has surfaced regarding the questionable project. Well, we did have a mildly exciting teaser poster that MGM whipped up for the Licensing International Expo. Besides that, though, the most interesting tidbit crept onto everyone's radar last week when a rumor hit saying that the talented filmmaker Darren Aronofsky (Pi, Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain) might possibly be helming the project. This week on Bloody Disgusting (via our friends at SlashFilm) they somewhat confirm this suspicion and additionally bring us word that the new RoboCop film apparently will not be a straight remake. Do tell! Bd learned that "MGM and Phoenix Pictures are close to pegging Darren Aronofsky." This is a bit more solid than last week's news that he was simply one of many directors in to discuss the project.

'RoboCop' Logline Reveals It's Actually a Sequel!

15 July 2008 1:47 AM, PDT | From bloody-disgusting.com | See recent Bloody-Disgusting.com news

Before anyone complains that "this isn't horror", the first Robocop was originally given an X-rating by the MPAA for scenes of excessive violence. It's pretty damn bloody, and it's pretty damn disgusting... good enough for me. Today we received word that MGM and Phoenix Pictures are close to pegging Darren Aronofsky to direct the latest "remake", which we also discovered is actually a sequel! Here's the logline: Present day Los Angeles, 20 years after the termination of the RoboCop program, the city decides to reinstate the program. If this all happens, I'd love to introduce Aronofsky to The Dark Knight, where he can see how to do it right...

The original revolved around a fatally-wounded police officer who becomes a cyborg crime fighter. (more)

'Red Dawn' Remake, Whatever... But an Aronofsky 'RoboCop' Remake?

9 July 2008 2:15 AM, PDT | From Rope Of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

The Hollywood Reporter has a new article talking about how Dan Bradley (who?) will direct a remake of the 1984 flick Red Dawn. Carl Ellsworth has been hired to recraft the ultimate homeland invasion story about a new generation of besieged high schoolers. This is all fine, but who really cares when a doozy of a side note is found in the third graph? MGM toppers Harry Sloan and Mary Parent announced the [Red Dawn] remake -- along with a big-budget rebuild of "RoboCop," which director Darren Aronofsky among others has recently been in to discuss -- in May at the Festival de Cannes. Doth my eyes deceive me? Aronofsky? For RoboCop? Of course, the mention is a mere high note in what is probably a list that includes no one else of note. When I read "among others" in a Hollywood rag it is typically because the others weren't mentioning.

Director Inarritu Launches Anti-drug Ads

2 April 2008 5:15 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Celebrated Mexican filmmaker Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu has directed a series of shocking new TV adverts in a bid to make U.S. teens aware of the dangers of drug abuse.

The Babel moviemaker has worked on three public service announcements in association with non-profit drug programme Meth Project which debuted on TV in the U.S. state of Montana on Monday.

In the ads, the director depicts the dangers of methamphetamine - known as "ice" - which has been additively abused by an alarming number of America's youth over the last decade.

The state of Montana comes in at five in the list of U.S. of adolescents using the highly addictive stimulant, which is favoured for the ease of acquiring ingredients needed to make the drug.

The 30-second ads - which use a themed tagline of "This isn't normal, but on meth it is" - portray the abhorrent behaviour linked to long-term "ice" addiction.

A spokesperson for the Meth Project says Oscar-nominated Inarritu was chosen due to "his gritty, unflinching visual style".

Inarritu decided to take on the project after viewing a previous set of ads directed by Requiem For A Dream moviemaker Darren Aronofsky.
