DVD Releases: Dec. 1, 2009: Wield a Knife of Ice by the Deadline Set by the Little Red Devil

30 November 2009 6:16 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

A new month; a new batch of DVDs and Blu-rays to consider. We've used the phrase "mixed bag" a few times before this year, but never has it been more apropos than with regard to those discs that are being released on December 1st, 2009!

A new Evil Dead is on its way -- not that anyone can figure out why. Gremlins is hitting Blu-ray as is the new Terminator flick. And the Brittany Murphy-starrer Deadline, which is better than it has any business being, drops along with a few other indies like Deader Country, Poker Run, and Sins of the Father.

Little Red Devil with Daniel Baldwin and Dee Wallace definitely sounds intriguing, but for my money, the hand's down pick of the week is 1972's Knife of Ice, a rare Italian giallo from Umberto Lenzi starring the gorgeous and glamorous Carroll Baker.

Born Mary Frances Reynolds in El Paso, Texas, she lucked into her career by winning a beauty contest, which included a contract with Warner Brothers. Making her debut in “June Bride,” she also scored a charted hit with the song “Aba Daba Honeymoon.”

American Cinematheque 'Grindhouse' Series Features Italian Shockers

6 July 2009 8:50 PM, PDT | ESplatter.com | See recent ESplatter news »

From the sublime to the ridiculous, the Italian genre films from the 1960s through the 1970s still remain the gold standard, the Golden Age, the yardstick to measure bigger-than-life greatness in low budget international cult cinema. Rivaled only by the Japanese in the same time period for sheer jaw-dropping wildness, the Italian moviemakers toiled in the salt mines of debased genres - giallo (sexy suspense) thrillers, sword and sandal adventures, spaghetti sagebrush sagas, gothic horror, nunsploitation and, last but not least, polizioteschi or the action-packed crime film. That said, before delving further back in time, the American Cinematheque in L.A. is kicking off a "Grindhouse" film series with a double bill from the 1980s-'90s - Dario Argento's "Opera" and Michele Soavi's "Cemetery Man" July 9. Also screening are two sexy jet-set, giallo mindbenders with Carroll Baker (Paranoia and A Quiet Place To Kill); a peplum double bill »

Gonzo Cannes: The Toughest 22-Year-Old Director at the Festival

19 May 2009 6:53 AM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

How do you learn to make a movie good enough to be accepted at the Cannes Film Festival when you're only 22? If you're Dara van Dusen, whose 12-minute film, Malzonkowie (Significant Others,) was one of 17 chosen from more than 1,500 for the prestigious student film competition at Cannes called Selection Cinefondation, you do it the hard way: You go to a film school in Poland, make movies in Polish -- and get screamed at in Polish. Van Dusen rejected the idea of applying to film schools like Nyu or UCLA after graduating from the Fieldston School in New York City at 18. "I'm just weird and different," she said over coffee on the Croisette. "I wanted to learn how to direct right away." Van Dusen, who is the granddaughter of actress Carroll Baker (Babyface) and Czech-born director Jack Garfein (who survived the... »
