"Monsieur Verdoux" -- Starring Charlie Chaplin. Also starring Mady Correll, Isobel Elsom, Audrey Betz, Ada May, Martha Ray. Directed by Charlie Chaplin. (1947, 124mins, B&W) Chaplin called this film his "cleverest and most brilliant", but he is certainly not the familiar Tramp in it. He plays a suave serial killer who makes his living marrying and murdering lonely rich women. Chaplin turned this shocking conceit into a black comedy that seems surprisingly modern to us today -- especially in its presentation of the hypocrisy of societies that condemn murder committed by individuals but glorify war.
A rare big screen revival.

After getting a comment from a reader regarding my article King, Kubrick and The Shining, the question was posed: Stephen King says that the Kubrick ending (Jack's 1921 photo) was used in an old Twilight Zone episode. Which episode is he referring to? It took a bit of research, but what I found was startling. The 1960 Twilight Zone episode, The After Hours, stars Anne Francis as a customer in a department store who is looking to buy a gold thimble. What does this have to do with The Shining? Especially Kubrick’s version of The Shining? Plenty, although it is rather hard to describe without major spoilers. But from the ‘gray eye’ which opens the story (reminiscent of the The Shining’s first paperback edition), to the discussions between a customer and a sales clerk (which eerily mirror Jack Torrance’s conversations with Grady), to the quaint, orchestral dance hall music throughout, »

Actor Bob Hastings is a television veteran. Yet, you are more likely to know his voice than his face. He has worked in many genres and featured in several innovative radio and television science fiction shows. His career took in the earliest days of TV entertainment and playing a regular character in acclaimed superhero cartoons from the 1990s. But it all began with a song.
"I think it was about 1935 or the beginning of 1936," Hastings said. "A teacher heard me sing in school at an assembly and he thought I sang well enough that I should be on radio. So I started singing radio shows and from there... There was a newspaper called 'The Daily Mirror' and they had a children's show on Wmca in New York and I sang on that...for maybe a couple of years. Then I went over to NBC and that was before the networks »

Word emerged yesterday that Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way would join with Warner Bros. to produce an all new silver screen version of "The Twlight Zone." Rod Serling's classic sci-fi/fantasy/horror TV series ended in 1964, but it has seen a number of TV revivals since then. The only feature-length adaptation came in 1983, a multi-part, multi-director effort with contributions from the likes of Steven Spielberg, Joe Dante, George Miller and John Landis.
All we know about the coming "Twilight Zone" return so far is that the aim is to produce a continuous story based on any number of classic series plotlines. Quite a different approach from the 1983 version's discrete vignettes, but it's good to know that Serling's original stories will be serviced. The question is, which would be best for the coming movie? Keep reading for my own suggestions. And beware... spoilers ahead.
