Farber on Film: Introduction, Part 3 (Farber Before Negative Space)

18 November 2009 7:43 AM, PST | The Auteurs | See recent The Auteurs news »

You don’t necessarily think of Manny Farber as your Baedeker to the shadings and luridities of mainstay American movie acting, as a dab hand of the concise plot summary that uncoils into deft film critique, or associate him with audience recommendations and words like “marvelous,” “sensitive,” “poignant,” and “sparkling.” You particularly don’t think of Farber this way if your experience of his writing is confined to Negative Space. Yet consider three short illustrative moments from his many, sometimes-weekly film columns of the 1940s and '50s.

This is Farber on Frank Sinatra & Co. in From Here to Eternity for The Nation, August 29, 1953:

The laurel wreaths should be handed out to an actor who isn’t even in the picture, Marlon Brando, and to an unknown person who first decided to use Frank Sinatra and Donna Reed in the unsweetened roles of Maggio, a tough little Italian American soldier, »

A Single Actress (Julianne Moore and Oscar)

27 September 2009 10:49 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

There can be only one ...winner, that is.

This year's supporting actress contest (new predictions!), if you believe early hype, is down to Mo'Nique vs. ummmm? She's way out front for her abusive mother role in Precious. But with Julianne Moore's supposedly vivid contribution to Tom Ford's A Single Man newly exciting festival auds, we could see the redhead goddess nab her 5th career nomination. That's quite an honor, even if she never wins that elusive statue.

The Man That Got Away Keeps Getting Away

A couple of years ago I asked readers who the next Deborah Kerr would be. Which modern important actress will be forever appreciated but never fully embraced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences? Back then Kate Winslet was sort of gunning for the honor. Now that the English Rose has noisily moved into the winner's circle, the imaginary competition is back on. »

Screenwriter Furia Jr. Dies

9 May 2009 7:10 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Hollywood writer John Furia Jr., famed for his work on scripts for TV favourites Bonanza and Hawaii Five-o , has died at the age of 79.

Bosses at the Writers Guild of America West (Wgaw), the union Furia was once president of, confirmed the news in a statement on Friday, although a cause of death has not yet been determined.

Furia began his career singing with bands in New York City before moving to California and becoming one of Hollywood's most prolific writers.

He wrote for TV series including The Twilight Zone and The Waltons as well as for the big screen, penning hits such as The Singing Nun, which starred Debbie Reynolds and Greer Garson.

Furia also helped found the University of Southern California's School of Cinema-Television Writing Division and even taught screen and television writing there.

Wgaw President Patric M. Verropne says, "John's character and dignity touched and influenced generations of writers from the founders of the Guild itself to the newest of student-associates." »

Classic Film Stars: Now Less Elusive!

24 March 2009 7:32 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Have you heard the news that Warner Bros has opened up their vaults? Seems at least one of the major studios has realized that those who truly love the cinema love the entire history of it. They'd like to see more of that history.

Norma Shearer and Robert Montgomery live Private Lives but they

still want to show off their brand new DVD collections!

There's a reason that some former mega stars (Norma Shearer is a good example) fade in the public consciousness quicker than others. Actually there are many reasons: changing tastes, mediocre filmographies, undramatic personal lives -- especially if they don't end tragically, pop culture's rapid "who's next?" star meat grinder, lack of gay appeal (think about it: fascinating the gays insures a long shelf life for entertainers. I don't think I need to cite examples... they've probably popped into your head just reading that sentence). But I'm »

Kiss Her She's Irish

17 March 2009 6:05 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Happy St Patrick's Day

From three of the most successful Irish actresses (not a lot of Irish actresses seem to make a massive silver screen mark) to hit Hollywood: fascinating Anjelica Huston, endearing Maureen O'Hara and the goddess Greer Garson.

Contemporary actresses of varying degrees of Irishness that must be kissed today: Kathy Bates, Fiona Shaw, Rose McGowan, Jennifer Connelly, Allyson Hannigan (Willow), Kristen Bell (Veronica), Heather Graham and Janeane Garofalo. Did I forget anyone? Hollywood likes Irish men much more. Too many to list!

Don't you wish old photos came with audio tracks?

Or that you could time travel into the room as they were being taken.

And if either of those things were possible, wouldn't you grab every Old Hollywood candid you could find in order to listen in or join the party? What exactly would Rosalind Russell, Greer Garson and Merle Oberon chat about anyway? Roz only cares about the camera but who are Greer and Merle all smiles about?

I mean just fantasize for a moment about a night at ... on the bar with Marlene Dietrich and Claudette Colbert.

How much would you have to drink to not be starstruck and join right in. Too much. Too much I say. The mind clouds. The hangover would be epic.

Here's a photo I've cherished my whole life from an old out of print Natalie Wood book from the 80s. It's Dennis Hopper and Wood discussing acting styles as they screen A Streetcar Named Desire »
