The Girlfriend Experience

27 November 2009 9:12 AM, PST | Pure Movies | See recent Pure Movies news »

The Girlfriend Experience is one of the more courageous and challenging films to come out this year, and the fact that it Soderbergh’s can give us all hope. An odd beast, Steven Soderbergh; an odd, Janus-faced movie beast.  An Oscar-winning director (nominated twice in the same year—a feat only equalled once before, in 1938, by Michael Curtiz, who didn’t win) who pumps out the mall-pleasers like Ocean’s 11, 12, and 13 (though the mall was, apparently, less pleased with 12), Out of Sight, and—let’s face it—Erin Brockovich.  He also has a doppelganger, his Imp of the Perverse, that turns out uncompromising, indie fare like Schizopolis, the brilliant Full Frontal, and the even more brilliant Bubble.  But it isn’t a case of Robert Altman Syndrome (a director, God rest his soul, seemingly bent on immolating his career and repeatedly swallowing a grenade—like Prêt-à-Porter after The Player and »

Top Ten Movie Screamers

30 October 2009 6:53 PM, PDT | Alternative Film Guide | See recent Alternative Film Guide news »

Doctor X directed by Michael Curtiz (top); Janet Leigh in Psycho (bottom) Halloween Time. So, here’s my list of the Top Ten Movie Screamers of All Time. Well, at least the Top Ten Movie Screamers of All Time That I Can Think of Right Now. You won’t find any new movies here because I tend to avoid most recent horror movies — partly because most of the recent ones I’ve seen are total crap; partly because there’s enough horror in the world out there and I see no need for me to go looking for more at the movies. Also, most of the screaming newcomers don’t have the vocal flair of their predecessors. Even Naomi Watts, a really good actress, pales next to [...] »

On This Day In Movies: The Helen Morgan Story

2 October 2009 6:00 AM, PDT | HollywoodOutbreak.com | See recent Hollywood Outbreak news »

On this day in 1957, Warner Brothers Pictures released the soulful biopic, The Helen Morgan Story. Directed by Michael Curtiz, this story of the rise and fall of  a great singer with a series of romantic issues and an alcohol problem was most notable for the great vocal performance by Ann Blyth in the title role. Also in the cast were [...] »

retro trailer: ‘The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex’

27 September 2009 12:53 AM, PDT | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

Man, people worked more in the 1930s. Michael Curtiz has five other titles credited to him as director for 1939 besides this one. A movie like this today would consume a filmmaker for years, and he tossed it off between golf games. I love how the trailer makes it seem like the story is all about Elizabeth as a capricious and dangerous ruler because she wasn’t getting laid enough (and maybe that’s an accurate representation of the film -- I’ve never seen it). By the time Errol Flynn tells Bette Davis “I will love you always,” you have to wonder what else he could possibly respond to her “Do you love me?” if he doesn’t want to have to lead an army into war with the Portuguese or the Italians or whomever she might choose to open a can of lonely-lady whup-ass on out of sexual frustration. »

Kate Winslet Heads for TV in 'Mildred Pierce' Remake

16 August 2009 6:03 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

When you hear the name Mildred Pierce, and you happen to know your classic cinema, you probably go right to one woman: she of the big eyebrows and shoulder pads...better known as Joan Crawford. Crawford won her one and only Oscar for her role in Michael Curtiz's crime classic, and now another Oscar winning actress has signed for a remake of the noir tale, but this time it's for the small screen. Variety is reporting that Kate Winslet has joined forces with director Todd Haynes to star in a remake of Pierce as a cable miniseries.

Mildred Pierce was the story of a woman determined take on the restaurant world and make a better life for her daughters, only to have her eldest turn on her, and after much slapping and running up and down the stairs, Mildred finally *resorts to murder. The original film was based on James Cain's novel, »

Report: Kate Winslet may bring 'Mildred Pierce' to HBO

14 August 2009 12:06 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Fresh off her first Oscar win, might Kate Winslet already be eying an Emmy? According to Variety, Kate Winslet is attached to a new miniseries adaptation of the James M. Cain novel "Mildred Pierce," a project potentially earmarked for HBO. Oscar nominee Todd Haynes ("Far From Heaven") will write and direct "Mildred Pierce," which was previously brought to the big screen by director Michael Curtiz. That 1945 feature was a Best Picture nominee and earned an Oscar for Joan Crawford. Winslet would star as Mildred Pierce, who leaves her philandering husband, only to find that independence brings about a noir-ish... »

Kate Winslet is Todd Haynes’ Mildred Pierce

14 August 2009 6:42 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

[Safe] and Far From Heaven director Todd Haynes is moving to television for his next project, a mini-series adaptation of James M. Cain's classic noir novel Mildred Pierce. He's given Kate Winslet the nod to take the title role, a woman struggling to survive the depression and protect her daughter amidst a complex set of betrayals and even murder. It's the character that gave Joan Crawford her only Best Actress Oscar win, courtesy of Michael Curtiz' truly splendid 1945 feature film. Curtiz and his screenwriters Ranald MacDougall, William Faulkner and Catherine Turney took a number of creative liberties with Cain's novel, most notably changing its entire structure and set-up. Unlike the linear novel, the film recounts the story in flashback after Mildred Pierce has been arrested on suspicion of murder. It works quite wonderfully, and definitely creates even more of a sweaty and desperate tone than the novel has, and »

Sordid Murder and Sex: Todd Haynes Directing Kate Winslet in Mildred Pierce Miniseries

14 August 2009 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- The fascination for Michael Curtiz's Mildred Pierce continues. After Pedro Almodovar integrated parts of the film in the storyline for Volver, Todd Haynes will be making Mildred into miniseries mode and into a less straight jacket version than his homage to Douglas Sirk with Far From Heaven: meaning I'm expecting Haynes to be more faithful to the original novel written by James M. Cain than, the 1945 film. Logically, the miniseries will find a home with HBO (Vachon's Killer Films sided with them for Mrs Harris).  Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet is on board to play the role that Joan Crawford won an Academy Award for - it being a bored housewife who gets into the restaurant business, an enterprise that leads to back-stabbing, romance and murder. Here is the original trailer for the Warner Bros film. If this goes into production, this will be the first time I'm really psyched about a miniseries. »

Revisiting The Mystery Of The Wax Museum

29 June 2009 10:41 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

After sculptor Ivan Igor’s (Lionel Atwill) business partner burns his wax museum down in order to collect on an insurance policy, Igor’s life, work and physical appearance are destroyed.  The tragedy forces Igor into hiding, rebuilding, and relocating.  12 years pass and Igor finally resurfaces.  Inside the aforementioned 12 years of silence, the sculptor has managed to rebuild a great deal of sculptures, manufactured a nifty mask for himself and opened up a lovely new museum in New York.  Inside that timeframe, plenty of bodies have also gone mysteriously missing in New York. The problem : half of Ivan’s lifelike “sculptures” are actually human beings covered in wax….hmmm, I wonder where all those “missing” bodies have gone.

Local reporter Florence Dempsey (Glenda Farrell) finds herself smack dab in the middle of Igor’s new museum the morning before it opens.  The brash reporter happens to notice one specific »

Pros And Cons

'Made it, Ma! Top of the world!" With these words, mama's boy Arthur Cody Jarrett (James Cagney) is blown to smithereens in Raoul Walsh's blistering "White Heat" (1949).

The film includes two other standout scenes: Jarrett going bonkers in the prison mess hall when he learns his beloved mom has died, and an obliging Jarrett riddling a car trunk with bullets when a prisoner inside pleads for air.

"White Heat" unreels May 10 (Mother's Day!) and 11 as part of Film Forum's new series, »

Noir City 7—Eddie Muller’s Introductory Remarks to The Unsuspected and Desperate

2 February 2009 5:19 PM, PST | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

It is a tradition at Noir City, Eddie Muller reminded his audience, that they screen one film at each festival that is utterly incomprehensible.  “Tonight,” Muller grinned, “is the night.”  The Unsuspected claims the honor, which is not to say that the film isn’t fantastic, but no one will be asked to recapitulate the plot on their way home on Muni.  To attempt so would mean possibly riding to the end of the line (“which ends up in, like, Hell”).  The Unsuspected is based on the novel by Charlotte Armstrong.  Armstrong is a terrific writer also responsible for the Marilyn Monroe noir Don’t Bother to Knock, based on Armstrong’s novel Mischief.

Muller conceded his program notes for The Unsuspected were slightly incorrect.  He billed the film as “lustrous studio filmmaking at its finest”; but, the film is actually an independent Michael Curtiz production distributed by Warner Brothers. »
