Animalada (review)

A Heaven of Horror Sergio Bizzio’s Animalada (2001) Synapse films. What is the greatest love story ever told? Is it the one where dad delivered a pizza to the girl next door only to then realize he had been living next door to the love of his life without even knowing it? Or, maybe it’s the story Aunt Jane tells about her Mexican lover, who treated her like a princess for three months, writing a page about his love for her in a diary that he’d later give to her on the day they were married.  Or maybe it’s not as peachy clean as that, as mom and dad, as Jane and Mexico, as picture perfect so to speak. Maybe it’s a much more obscure tale of love, filled with the cottony softness of a Snuggles commercial packing the hard hitting bluntness of the raping of a brick. »

Unprincipled Hacks and Imperious Haughties

29 April 2009 11:50 AM, PDT | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

In the trembling aftermath of the Specter defection, Nate Silver (whom I met last week at a swinging loft party on the Lower East Side that was enlivened at one point by an interpretive free-form dance solo) asks: [I]f you're a Democrat, would you really want Arlen Specter to be anything other than a soulless, unprincipled hack? Hell, no. Or to put it another way, Hell, no! For a man of his years, Specter's political pliancy would make him the marvel of any Ineygar yoga class, his joints so lubricated with oily calculation that he can take as many positions as there are positions to take, then add in an extra one to express his eccentricity. Every institution needs its unprincipled hacks to prevent a crippling arthritis of integrity that leads to stasis and false pride. For example, let's say a magazine needs an extended caption on a young stunner »

Seven Scores: Michael J. Lewis - Upon This Rock

4 February 2009 8:31 AM, PST | Daily Film Music Blog | See recent Daily Film Music Blog news »

After the success of The Madwoman of Chaillot, Lewis found himself more film work thanks to the fact that the music he delivered for his first picture was quite good and it was featured very prominently. The next picture we're discussing is from the other end of the spectrum: Upon This Rock is so obscure that I haven't even seen it and I couldn't even find a relevant still or poster from the internet for it! Lewis got the job through his work for a 1970 adaptation of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar for which he composed the music. You might be surprised to learn that he got the job after Britain's eminent William Walton was fed up with film scoring after his experiences on Battle of Britain. For those of you who aren't familiar with the story, let us re-coup:

Sir William Walton was a truly great English, 20th century composer. He »
