Robert Gives Thanks

25 November 2009 11:01 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

I love slow movies. Really slow. For the longest time I thought everyone else considered that word to signify the worst in movies. Slow meant bad enough to put you to sleep. I love movies that put me to sleep. I’ve a whole collection of movies that I can pop in the DVD player whenever I can’t sleep and they’ll do the trick. If we can agree that music peaceful enough to put you to sleep can still be great, why not movies?

So this year I’m thankful for slow movies. But I’m also thankful for others who love them, because together we inspire filmmakers to keep making them. Great modern films like Goodbye, Solo and The Assassination of Jesse James..., and The Band’s Visit and Silent Light.

I’m thankful that cinema hasn’t been completely overrun by the desire to make anything »

Lionsgate Picks Up ‘Solomon Kane’

13 November 2009 8:00 AM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

One of our own Chris Ullrich’s favorite films this year, Solomon Kane, has apparently been acquired for U.S. distribution by Lionsgate, a studio known for supporting genre and independent movies. According to Fangoria, who broke the news, there are rumblings that the film may even get a theatrical run prior to a DVD release.

Horror aficionados might be familiar with director Michael J. Bassett, who previously directed Deathwatch (2002) and Wilderness (2006). Soloman Kane is a character originally created by pulp fiction author Robert E. Howard, of  Conan the Barbarian fame. Stories about the character appeared in Weird Tales magazine in the 1920’s.

James Purefoy stars as the title character, who roams the earth trying to wipe out evil after the devil acquires his soul and he has a change of heart about his evil ways. The movie also stars prolific actor Max Von Sydow (Flash Gordon, Dune, The Tudors »

Lionsgate has picked up the Us distribution rights to Solomon Kane, based on the character created by Conan writer Robert E. Howard, according to Fangoria.

The Puritan gunslinger, who fights supernatural evil in Pre-Revolutionary America, first appeared in the pulp magazine Weird Tales in 1928 and went on to feature in several comic books published by Marvel and Dark Horse.

I've included the official trailer below. The film tells the origins of the 16th century antihero and is aimed to be the first of a trilogy.

It stars James Purefoy in the title role, Max von Sydow as Solomon's father, Mackenzie Crook as deranged priest Father Michael, Rachel Hurd-Wood as Meredith Crowthorn, Pete Postlethwaite as Puritan patriarch William Crowthorn and Alice Krige as his wife Katherine, and Ian Whyte as a demon called The Reaper.

The U.S. distribution rights for the film adaptation of Robert E. Howard’s “Solomon Kane” have been acquired by Lionsgate.

According to Fangoria, the rights were picked up at the American Film Market and may lead to “Solomon Kane” having a full theatrical release before coming out on DVD.

The $40 million film was written and directed by Michael J. Bassett and stars James Purefoy as the title character. Bassett’s previous films include “Deathwatch” and “Wilderness” while Purefoy is perhaps best known for his role as Marc Antony on the HBO series, “Rome.” Legendary film actor Max Von Sydow also stars in the movie along with Rachel Hurd-Wood, Pete Postlethwaite and Alice Krige.

Halloween List-Making Invades The MTV Newsroom

30 October 2009 12:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

For this week's final Halloween movies list, I decided to turn hit up the real superstars: my co-workers here in the MTV Newsroom who keep this great ship moving every damn day. After the jump you'll find recommendations and reminiscences from around the office. If you're game for some heavy reading, make sure to check out the last write-up, detailing Joel Hanek's pick: "Ernest Scared Stupid." Oh yes, he went there.

As for myself (MTV Movies Blog editor Adam Rosenberg), it's a toss-up. To this day I still have occasional nightmares relating to "Candyman," the Bernard Rose-directed, Virginia Madsen-starring horror flick based on a tale by novelist Clive Barker. There's something uniquely terrifying about the Candyman's ability to attack at any time, day or night. When horror can touch you even in the relative safety of sunlight, that's something to fear.

The other one that still gets me, »

Are These The Ten Greatest Villain Costumes in Sci-Fi Movie History?

29 October 2009 1:15 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

When I closed my eyes and pictured the greatest villain costumes in sci-fi movies, I was surprised how often hair -- and headpieces -- come into play. That makes sense for those of us who are not costume purists because we're thinking of the character as a whole, and in movies we're very often looking at close-ups of villains. We want to get up close and personal, to study the sneer, to examine the evil eyes, to absorb the dismissive scowl, to observe the raised eyebrows.

Isn't it the whole package that sells a character as a villain? The actor makes all the difference in the world, no matter if he's buried under a ton of makeup or becomes nearly unrecognizable, but the costume plays an important role. In honor of all those who will sally forth this weekend in costumes that are good, bad, and ugly, we salute the »

Shutter Island Third Trailer

28 October 2009 11:07 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Back in June of this year the first trailer appeared for Shutter Island, Martin Scorsese’s latest collaboration with favorite leading man, Leonardo DiCaprio. It was creepy-as-hell and solidified it on my list of most anticipated movies of 2009. Unfortunately a couple of months later news hit that Paramount had moved the release date from October 2nd this year to February 19th next year. As a movie fan – as well as a follower of daily movie news – that ranks right up there with the most annoying things to happen.

A second theatrical trailer surfaced at the start of last month that even though it wasn’t as effective the first (maybe it was the initial exposure to the creepy material that lead to the effect it had on me) but nonetheless made it look great. And now we have a third Shutter Island trailer for your viewing pleasure, which is basically »

New Shutter Island Trailer Cranks up the Horror

Whoever cut this latest trailer for Martin Scorsese’s upcoming suspense/thriller “Shutter Island” must have been on orders to make it look as much like the “Saw” films as possible. That, or one of those “Ring” remakes. It is close to Halloween, after all. The result: a noticeably creepier, more “horror”-ish looking trailer for “Shutter Island”, which first premiered on SpikeTV. Directed by Martin Scorsese and adapted from the novel by Dennis Lehane, the film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Emily Mortimer, Michelle Williams, Max von Sydow, and Jackie Earle Haley. Shutter Island Synopsis: It’s 1954, and up-and-coming U.S. marshal Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) is assigned to investigate the disappearance of a patient from Shutter Island’s Ashecliffe Hospital. He’d been gunning for an assignment on the island for reasons of his own—but before long he wonders whether he hasn’t been brought there as part of a twisted plot by hospital doctors whose radical treatments range from unethical to illegal to downright sinister.

Teddy’s code-breaking skills soon provide a promising lead, but the hospital refuses him access to records he suspects would break the case wide open.
