Sony has decided to dress up like they work in a funeral home and fight aliens because they’re moving ahead with a third “Men in Black” movie. The studio has hired “Tropic Thunder” writer Etan Cohen to pen the new installment. Unfortunately, the “Men in Black” series didn’t succeed because it existed in a world where sharp-dressed men used outrageous weapons to police and protect wacky aliens. It succeeded because of Will Smith as Agent J and Tommy Lee Jones as Agent K. Their chemistry combined with Barry Sonnenfeld’s direction and Smith’s natural charisma brought “Men in Black” and its 2002 sequel to a nearly $1.1 billion worldwide gross. Hit the jump for details on why all of those elements could be missing from “Men in Black 3″.
While Sonnenfeld is set to return (although he’s not officially signed on at this point), the participation of Smith and Jones is iffy. »

Ethan’s parents are long gone, but he is still living in the same house that he was raised in. His neighbor Trevor (Rip Torn) is also his evil landlord who has been trying to evict Ethan for several months – as an unemployed heroin addict, Ethan cannot afford his rent. Other than his landlord, most of the residents of Blythe (a small California desert town) try to help Ethan get by. A few old ladies occasionally drop by for a game of cards (letting Ethan win in order to give him much needed cash). The aged prostitute across the street has also taken a liking to Ethan; as has »

Chicago – Maybe you’ve heard of a little show called “30 Rock”? It doesn’t set the ratings on fire but critics and award-giving bodies go crazy for it like kids with pixie sticks. Personally, I think the third season of “30 Rock” was a slight step down from the second, but there’s no denying that this is one of the best comedies on television, as its recent major wins at the Emmys proved yet again.
DVD Rating: 4.0/5.0
Sitcom television is always about the ensemble. Think about your favorite comedies. Shows like “Seinfeld,” “Cheers,” “Arrested Development” - they were all amazing group efforts. “30 Rock” is no different. Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, Jack McBrayer, Tracy Morgan, and Jane Krakowski may be the five faces peering out the front of the DVD box for the recently released third season, but even they regularly have their scenes stolen by the extended cast, one of the best on television. »

Golden Boys is a film that seems like a homage to the Whales of August. Both films focus on a cast of elder stars, but the earlier picture featured a tighter storyline and better performances. Golden Boys does have some charm, and a curiosity to see David Carradine in one of his last roles, but it also has an unfocused narrative. In 1905 Cape Cod, three elderly sea captains, Captain Hedge (David Carradine), Captain Burgess (Rip Torn), and Captain Ryder (Bruce Dern) are tired of their bachelor.s home being a mess and none of them having any skill in the kitchen. The trio decides that the best way to take care of their needs is to advertise for »

When did it become a prerequisite for aging actors to make movies geared toward septua- and octogenarians? The Golden Boys, a labored and irritatingly slow film from writer/director Daniel Adams based on the novel by Joseph C. Lincoln, squanders an impressive cast for the pursuit of a plot that quickly loses what little comedic value it has. The pacing of the film is glacial, nothing is truly at stake, and the drama underwritten and long-winded in spite of how much the film longs to be a nostalgic throwback to the decent man-and-women comedies of yesteryear.
The setting is Cape Cod, circa 1905. Three men, all more-or-less retired sea captains, bicker in their shared home. There’s wise, gentlemanly and commanding Captain Zeb (David Carradine, in one his last roles), rambunctious Captain Jerry (Rip Torn) and the levelheaded but somewhat rebellious Captain Perez (Bruce Dern). Amidst the largely pointless squabbling that »

In the stress of daily living, like maybe falling over debris on a street being permanently readied for our Never To Be Seen Second Avenue subway, one might not realize that today, July 24, is Cousins Day. Who so mandated this, no idea. Not a clue. I only know Chase's Calendar of Events decrees it. I, therefore, am prepared:
Sissy Spacek and Rip Torn? Cousins. Lauren Bacall and Shimon Peres? Cousins. Lee Remick and the Smothers Brothers? Cousins. Glenn Close is second cousin to Brooke Shields. »

When I consider the term “eccentric”, I think of the orbits of comets, irregularly-shaped pearls, and the conversation I had with my ex-employer when our relationship began to deteriorate and she complained that my “eccentricity credits had run out.” Four years later, I have to ask: “Can eccentricity credits ever really run out?” Or more importantly, should they? I think not! And I consider it highly irregular of her to think so.
Now—due to the programming efforts of Pacific Film Archive’s Steve Seid—to the term “eccentric” I associate cinema. “Eccentric Cinema: Overlooked Oddities and Ecstasies, 1963–82”, currently running at Pfa through August 27, 2009, states Seid’s case: “Eccentric cinema thrives on pictorial surplus, the indulgent storyline, and a contempt for the customary, all resting upon the sagging shoulders of extravagant skill. This is no trash cinema, with its cheesy topics, uninvited camp, and joyful ineptitude. Instead, eccentricity might show »

The stakes surrounding Michael Jackson were always high. Even when his songs were at their frothiest, there was a certain amount of self-seriousness that went along with his persona. That grew as his career went on (to publicize 1995’s HIStory, a total of nine giant statues of Jackson were floated down various rivers in Europe, a controversial and uncomfortable move that was part of his label’s $30 million campaign to publicize the album). It wasn’t necessarily surprising, as Jackson wasn’t just a performer but also a brand and a business, and when you’re dealing with the millions of dollars often associated with the singer, you’re bound to approach everything with a certain amount of gravitas.
But there was a lighter side to Jackson, too. He was even willing to poke fun at his public persona. He famously appeared in the Will Smith action comedy “Men in Black II” as himself, »

In a story from The Hollywood Reporter, Roadside Attractions has picked up the Us rights to Mitchell Lichtenstein's comedy Happy Tears.
The film stars Parker Posey, Demi Moore, Ellen Barkin and Rip Torn.
"These are two larger-than-life performances from Parker Posey and Demi Moore as sisters who have a love-hate relationship," stated Roadside company president Howard Cohen.
Lichtenstein went on to say, "This is a tough time for independent film, and I believe that the team at Roadside Attractions knows how to find an enthusiastic audience for this funny, offbeat movie." »

Actor Rip Torn (Men in Black) has been given probation in a drunken driving case in Connecticut. The 78-year-old was approved Tuesday for admission into an alcohol education program. The judge says Torn must be retested for his driver's license because of his severe hearing impairment. The actor will still be allowed to drive. Torn was arrested near his home in December while driving a car with a Christmas tree tied to the top. He pleaded not guilty in January to drunken driving. He qualified for the program even though he has two previous drunken driving arrests in New York. »

Oscar nominee Rip Torn has been granted probation and ordered to enrol in an alcohol education programme following his December arrest for driving under the influence (DUI).
The 78-year-old was pulled over by police on 14 December when he was spotted driving along the breakdown lane on a highway in Connecticut.
He failed part of a field sobriety test after giving up halfway, claiming the ground wasn't level enough, and refused to take a breath test, according to state police.
Torn pleaded not guilty to allegations of illegal operation of a motor vehicle while under the influence and failure to drive in the proper lane in January, and this week (begs18May09) a Connecticut judge decided he could avoid prison time as long as he completes the alcohol tutorial.
However the actor, who suffers from a severe hearing impairment, must retake his driver's test to keep hold of his licence.
Torn's run in with the law in December was his third DUI arrest in the last five years - and it occurred almost two years after he lost his licence and was fined for a similar charge in New York. »

In our politically expedient, hyper-add times, director Tim Disney reminds us African-Americans had it tough in the post-civil rights era long before Katrina with this Texas-set drama based on true story. As much a legal thriller as anything else, "American Violet" stars Alfre Woodward as the steely mother of Dee Roberts (Nicole Beharie), a woman wrongly scooped up from the projects amidst a mass drug raid and harassed into a plea bargain. With the help of an Aclu attorney (Tim Blake Nelson) and an ex-cop (Will Patton), she must go up against a callous district attorney (Michael O'Keefe), who's playing a numbers game in pursuit of federal money, »
