DVD: Coraline, Hotel, Watchmen

20 July 2009 7:09 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Try to imagine this DVD release roundup in 3-D for maximum enjoyment.

What's new on DVD Tuesday? We'll bookend this roundup with the two best releases. Links to add them to your queues provided because I'm sweet and helpful like that.

Coraline - I loved the use of 3D in Coraline so I'm wondering how it will transfer to the flatter world of home entertainment: Will that tunnel into Other Mother be as beckoning? Would the transformative acrobatic sister act pay off quite so well? Even if they won't, the film's imaginative visuals and fun character play will pull you into its rewarding tale of a bored little girl suddenly fighting for her soul and her parent's lives in a fantasy world that's not quite like her own. Coraline's journey is often compared to Alice's trip through the looking glass or down the rabbit hole. Miyazaki's Spirited Away was also described that way. »

Halfway House: Donkey

24 June 2009 9:40 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

When a movie doesn't work for my first and last series -- sometimes the movie star's mug will be the first thing you see or the last (or both) -- I'm gonna use it elsewhere when it's amusing. Spinoff Series Alert!

Screenshots from halfway through the movie in question. We're about sixty-six minutes in for this one.

Look, he's my donkey! This made me guffaw when I jumped to the halfway point of the DVD. See, Jesus cured this little crippled boy but he seems more excited about that ass than his newly working legs. Regardless, Richard Burton is so impressed you can totally tell he's going to convert to Christianity even though it will cost him his life. At the end of The Robe [*Spoiler*] Burton will walk up into heaven while a chorus sings "Hallelujah".

Subtle!

Terminator Salvation: Robots bad. Humans good. That is all. Last Chance Harvey: The routine romantic comedy is greatly elevated by the elegant presences of Emma Thompson and Dustin Hoffman. [trailer] Sugar: Drama about a Dominican baseball player recruited to play in the Major Leagues. I’ve got a screener of this around here somewhere that I keep meaning to watch -- I’m a sucker for baseball movies. [official site] Pour elle: French thriller about a man trying to spring his wife from jail. Paul “Million Dollar Baby” Haggis is getting ready to remake this. [official site] The Hide: Homegrown British thriller about a crime on the windswept mudflats of Suffolk. Star Alex MacQueen is appearing in that Sci Fi Channel thing Kröd Mändoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire. [IMDb] W.C.: Drama about the toilet attendants in a Dublin nightclub. No, really. [official site] Shadows in the Sun: Family drama set on »

Tony Award Nominations / Movie Connections

5 May 2009 11:42 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

The Tony Award Nominations are upon us. As is my inconsistent tradition, I thought I'd share a little bit about a movies you can rent or think about to create an unfulfilling celluloid guilty-by-association approximation of the Broadway experience of the 2008/2009 season before the TONYs roll around on June 7th. Not everyone gets to New York to see the shows. And even if you live here, like me, you don't get to them in your financially challenged years. Tony Winners Cynthia Nixon (who seems to be everywhere lately, right?) and In the Height's man Lin-Manuel Miranda are announcing them live any minute now.

If you want a reminder of what's eligible which you can use to see who got snubbed check out this eligibility chart.

Favorite Movie Theaters: Bob Collins' Video Tribute To The Uptown In Washington D.C.

By Bob Collins

There was a time in the grand era of movie palaces where the theater we saw a movie at was as important as the film itself. Names like Marcus Loew and William Fox built and operated theater palaces that were created to give the common man a feeling of royalty, even if only for a couple of hours while they were entertained by the latest fare from Hollywood.  Studios, too, built monuments to showmanship where the movies they made could be seen in all their splendor.

Many of these theaters still exist; Grauman’s Chinese in Hollywood, The Loew’s Jersey in Jersey City, the Fox Theatres in Atlanta and Detroit, among others.  Some are now performing arts centers, but a few still operate the way they were originally conceived – as movie theaters.
