Samuel Fuller had one of the most fascinating of Hollywood careers -- a 50-plus-year self-mythologizing rampage that began with scriptsmith work in the mid 1930s at the age of 24, evolving into one of the most distinctive auteurs America has ever produced, writing/directing some 25 movies and having a hand in writing 25 more, helplessly manufacturing himself into a crusty man's-man Hollywood gadfly in the process, readily available for manic interviews and iconic appearances in young auteurs' self-conscious films.
There are always corners in his career that you, whomever you are, haven't yet explored (honestly, any single Fuller film remains half-experienced if you've only seen it once), and so the new Sony set of Fulleriania is a prize, beginning as it does with "It Happened in Hollywood" (1937), Fuller's first screenplay credit, and an utterly freakish, Charlie Kaufman-esque launch of meta-ness that centers on Hollywood's discomfiting transition from silents to talkies, barely »

As happy as I am that Lauren Graham is coming back to series television, I can’t help wishing she’d waited just a bit longer to sign the Parenthood contract.
Why? Because HBO announced Tuesday that Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino will write and executive produce a new dramedy for the cable network.
The series is about three adult sisters, all writers, sharing an apartment in the upper east side of NYC. Their domineering mother is a “literary lioness” who dotes on their ne’er-do-well brother. According to Sherman-Palladino, “It’s the story of love, hate, family — and finding the perfect opening line.”
To capture the spirit of anticipation that I have for this series, you have to ignore Sherman-Palladino’s most recent effort, The Return of Jezebel James, and relive the glory days of Gilmore Girls via this clip from “Donna Reed Night” (after the very loud commercial »

Mad Men fever is sweeping the nation—if you want to copy the looks of the women behind the Mad Men, heed these tips offered by Raakhee Mirchandani in the New York Post : Curve-hugging styles like “fitted blouses tucked into tight pencil skirts under snug sweaters” will help you “highlight your assets” like sexpot Joan Holloway. Uncomfortable about that idea? “Layer Spanx under everything to help smooth, shape and push your bits and bobs in the right places.” To get more of a soft look like trophy wife Betty Draper, “think Grace Kelly meets Donna Reed” with ‘50s-style, full-skirted dresses.... »

Octuplets mother Nadya Suleman has something more than multiple bottle feedings and diaper changes to deal with: Attorney Gloria Allred filed a petition in Orange County Superior Court Monday requesting that a guardian be appointed to protect the rights of Suleman's eight infants now that their mom is reportedly moving forward with plans to film a reality show. "Rather than choosing to provide her children with a normal life, their mother has chosen to commercially exploit them and it appears she plans to continue commercial exploitation of them in the future," Allred said during a press conference held in law offices. »

In today's Twilight Saga Daily Dosage, we're going to discuss Catherine Hardwicke's recent interview with Austin360. She talks about her role as a director and why she turned down The Twilight Saga: New Moon. I must admit, I found much of what she had to say in this interview cloaked in a web of smokescreen and mirrors. She's saving face while poking blame at others and that's never an admiral quality... Over at Austin360.com, Catherine Hardwicke takes a stab at Summit Entertainment without ever using their name. I guess it's easier to attack a company when you just call it "the studio." She states she turned down directing New Moon because she needed more time to prepare. She also complains about not having any work ahead of her. Well, I guess she has some time on her hands now. :-) I don't mean to sound so critical of Catherine, »

I'm really trying to leave the gold man behind but he never unclenches his grip. Have you noticed the arms? Plus he has a sword... so, one has to move slowly away. Tip toe. Tip toe. I advise against sudden movements.
Anyway, for fun I thought I'd dedicate a post to the dozen acting Oscar winners who won when they were 33 years of age. Why? Because it's all about Kate Winslet right now! Here they are...
Harold Russell, The Best Years of Our Lives (1946... the only man! they make them wait longer. He was also the first disabled Oscar winner if my trivia is correct)Olivia DeHavilland, The Heiress (1949... second Oscar)Donna Reed, From Here to Eternity (1953)Sally Field, Norma Rae (1979)Meryl Streep, Sophie's Choice (1982... second Oscar)Jessica Lange, Tootsie (1982)Geena Davis, The Accidental Tourist (1988)Emma Thompson, Howards End (1992)Juliette Binoche, The English Patient (1996)
