[DVD Review] TCM Spotlight: Esther Williams, Volume 2

8 October 2009 3:00 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

TCM has put out some great vintage film collections in the last few years. The collections usually have a fair collection of winners and so-so contenders who need the better films to make them palatable and Esther Williams: Volume 2 is no exception. However, to the volume’s credit, it has a better ratio than most sets with 4 good to great films supporting 2 mediocre ones. The set could very well help reel in some younger viewers as the films in this volume have a surprisingly modern feel to them all. This one maybe good, but it might still qualify as “for collectors only”.

Thrill of a Romance (1945)

Co-starring Van Johnson and Henry Travers.

Geoffrey Rush earns acting triple crown with Tony Award win for 'Exit the King'

7 June 2009 6:55 PM, PDT | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

Geoffrey Rush became the 17th performer to win the acting triple crown of Oscar, Emmy, and Tony awards when he romped to victory tonight as best lead actor in a play.  Astonishingly, Geoffrey Rush won each of these prestigious prizes on his first try – the Oscar for "Shine" in 1996, the Emmy for "The Life and Death of Peter Sellers" in 2005, and now the Tony for "Exit the King."

Geoffrey Rush not only stars in this acclaimed production of the absurdist play by Eugene Ionesco but translated the text with director Neil Armfield. The Australian actor edged out performances by "God of Carnage" stars Jeff Daniels and James Gandolfini, Raul Esparza – who earned his third consecutive Tony nod for "Speed-the-Plow" – and newcomer Thomas Sadoski ("reasons to be pretty").

Can Elton John become a grand-slam awards champ?

23 May 2009 4:52 PM, PDT | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

So far only 10 people have won the grand slam of showbiz peer-group prizes — the Oscar, Emmy, Grammy and Tony: Mel Brooks, John Gielgud, Whoopi Goldberg, Helen Hayes, Audrey Hepburn, Marvin Hamlisch, Mike Nichols, Rita Moreno, Richard Rodgers and Jonathan Tunick. Elton John won a Tony Award for the music score to "Aida" (2000) and all of Gold Derby's award seers predict he'll pick up another for the music score to "Billy Elliot" on June 7. Having already won an Oscar for best song of 1994 ("Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" from "The Lion King") and five Grammys, all he'll need soon to join the grand-slam pantheon is an Emmy. He's not only eligible this year, but he's also campaigning aggressively to nab it. Elton and his partner David Furnish could win Emmys as co-producers of "Spectacle With Elvis Costello" on the Sundance Channel, which competes for best variety series. The show features Costello hosting interviews with, »

Talking Tonys: 'West Side Story' star Karen Olivo

10 May 2009 8:18 AM, PDT | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

"West Side Story" holds a few Tony Awards I.O.U.s. Back in 1958, it lost best musical to "The Music Man" and the spitfire role of Anita, played by Chita Rivera, wasn't even nominated! The Oscars got it right three years later, voting "West Side Story" best picture and giving Rita Moreno the Academy Award for best supporting actress for that part. Now there's a bold new staging on Broadway that's nominated for best revival with Anita played by Karen Olivo (Tony nominee, best featured actress), who recently originated the part of Vanessa in "In the Heights," which won best musical at the Tonys last year.  Related Videos Three 'Billy Elliot' boys pass our two Tonys quizzes Talking Tonys: '9 to 5' star Allison Janney Talking Tonys: 'Shrek' star Sutton Foster Jane Fonda dishes Tonys, '33 Variations,' Oscars, Katharine Hepburn, her dad and a lost cigarette lighter Get Gold Derby on Twitter. »

Anne Hathaway could contend at Oscars and Tonys for playing Judy Garland

23 March 2009 6:15 PM, PDT | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

If you thought Anne Hathaway was brave for singing and dancing with Hugh Jackman on the recent Oscarcast, that was a walk in the park compared with her next performance — playing Judy Garland on both stage and screen. The Oscar-nominated actress ("Rachel Getting Married") is to star in upcoming film and legit adaptations of Gerald Clarke's 2000 biography "Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland."

With the Weinstein Co. producing both these properties, Anne Hathaway is in good hands. While there is no word as to any of the other creatives involved in these projects, the source material is rich with possibilities, including as it does material in Judy Garland's own words. Gerald Clarke's biography of the late, great writer Truman Capote was the basis for "Capote," which was nominated for five awards at the 2005 Oscars including best picture and won lead actor for Philip Seymour Hoffman. »

Will 'West Side Story' be slighted by the Tony Awards yet again?

20 March 2009 1:09 PM, PDT | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

The Broadway revival of "West Side Story" was greeted with mixed reviews today. This groundbreaking show is the third of four musicals to come back to Broadway this season. As the previous two — "Pal Joey" and "Guys and Dolls" — were also critical disappointments, that means that 1969 also-ran "Hair" could establish itself as the front-runner for best musical revival at the Tony Awards when it opens next week. "West Side Story" has had little luck with the Tonys in its three previous Broadway incarnations.

Back in 1957, this musical updating of "Romeo and Juliet" electrified audiences with its daring blend of song and dance. However, it failed to prevail at the Tony Awards, losing four of its six bids. The two Tonys it did win went to director Jerome Robbins,  who picked up the second of an eventual three awards for choreography, and Oliver Smith, who earned the second of his eventual seven awards for scenic design. »

Some Juicy Nuggets of Forgotten Oscar Lore

20 February 2009 6:02 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

With all the presenters' banter heavily scripted and a lot of the winners easy to guess beforehand, the only truly unpredictable part of the Academy Awards is the acceptance speeches. Those Hollywood types -- especially actors, who love being the center of attention and looove the sound of their own voices -- might say anything in a rush of excitement and emotion.

Over at Esquire, they've compiled an amusing list of the various types of Oscar speeches: the Crusading Blowhard, the Weepy Babbler, the Short-and-Sweet, and so forth. Then, for added fun, they've dug up historical precedents for each of them. For example, Rita Moreno was the "Adorably" Bombastic Foreigner, cha-chaing up to the podium and shrieking into the microphone, long before Roberto Benigni embarrassed everyone with his antics. And while Juila Roberts was definitely a Meddling Presenter when she gave Denzel Washington his trophy, she was nothing compared to »
