I'd like you to meet your best friend

It was the opening day of the Disney-mgm studios in Orlando. The stars were there with their children. There was an official luncheon at the Brown Derby, modeled after the legendary Hollywood eatery. I was beside myself. I was in a booth sitting next to Jack Brickhouse, the voice of the Chicago Cubs. A man walked over and introduced himself. "Bob Elliott." Oh. My. God. Bob, of Bob and Ray.

For me he was the biggest star in the room. Who, after all, compared to even one half of Bob and Ray, was Tom Hanks? Whoopi Goldberg? Art Linkletter? "Gosh all whillikers, Mr. Science!" I said, "What's that long brown object???" Bob didn't miss a beat: "That's known as a board, Roger."

Another man was steaming toward us through the throng. A middle-aged man, well-dressed, tanned, with a pleasant smile. "Hi, Jack!" he said. "Say, I hear Ernie Banks is invited. »

Birthday Suits: Hamlets & Hydes

Today's Cinematic Birthdays 11/131312 Edward III (of Windsor), not the gay one who gets more cinematic treatment (including Derek Jarman's fascinating take), but his son. This is the one Shakespeare wrote a play about and the one who Mel Gibson implied to be the bastard son of Braveheart William Wallace, thereby giving the finger to history unless Wallace's sperm could survive years past his death. That Gibson's sperm could magically endure beyond the grave is far more likely. He already has eight children.1833 Edwin Thomas Booth, famous influential thespian and the 19th century's most prominent Hamlet. He's been portrayed onscreen and stage by famous thespians like Richard Burton and Frank Langella, usually in stories connected to his estranged brother's assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Will someone play him in the Spielberg helmed Lincoln film?

Alynda Wheat's Beat Cop: The Last Patrol

6 November 2009 9:58 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

There’s no way I’m going to get this right. We never say precisely what we ought to when we part, the words are never perfect enough — not even for those of us who get paid to write them…or used to, anyway. I’m sorry to say that this is the last time we’ll walk the Beat together as I'm leaving EW. So I’ll tell you what, Coppers, let’s save the hugs for the end, stuff down the tears (I grant that they’re probably all mine), and take a stroll. I’m ready if you are. »

Streep's Girl Lands TV Break

5 November 2009 5:41 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Meryl Streep's daughter is following in her mother's Hollywood footsteps after landing her first big acting break.

Grace Gummer, Streep's 23-year-old child with husband Don Gummer, made her stage debut in New York last year in dark comedy The Sexual Neuroses of Our Parents, and now she's making the transition to the small screen to play a 17 year old in Gigantic on the kids cable network Nickelodeon.

Gummer will play the daughter of a famous celebrity couple in the series, which is due to air next year. The show will also feature Joe Mantegna's daughter Gia, 19.

Grace isn't the first Streep child to test her acting skills - her older sister Mamie, 26, appeared in the movie Taking Woodstock and epic TV mini-series John Adams. »

The Human Condition (Criterion) Masaki Kobayashi’s epic (574 minutes) adaptation of Junpei Gomikawa’s six-volume novel was originally made and released as three separate films (1959-61), and is rightfully regarded as a landmark of Japanese cinema. Candide-like story of naïve, good-hearted Kaiji (Japanese superstar Tatsuya Nakadai) from labor camp supervisor, to Imperial Army solider, to Soviet Pow, and Kaiji’s struggle to maintain his humanity throughout. Unfolds with the mastery of a great novel, beautifully-shot, and a stunning example of cinematic mastery on the part of its makers. Four-disc set bonuses include: Interview with Kobayashi; Interview with Nakadai; Featurette; Trailer; Essay by critic Philip Kemp. Widescreen. Dolby 3.0 surround.

State Of Play (Universal) Russell Crowe stars as a veteran Washington D.C. political reporter investigating the murder of an aide to a rising congressional star (Ben Affleck), who also happens to be an old friend. »

Criminal Minds Premiere: Review & Discussion

25 September 2009 5:01 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

At the end of Criminal Minds last season, the Bau was searching for a serial killer called “The Reaper.” “The Reaper” forced the team from Detroit to Canada in an attempt to apprehend him, but he continued to elude all attempts from the Bau and ultimately attacks Morgan (Shemar Moore), stealing his credentials. As the season finale concluded, we were left with Hotchner (Thomas Gibson) standing face to face with “The Reaper” and as the episode faded to black, we were left with a singular sound; a gunshot.

Join us as I recap the season 5 premiere for criminal minds…

Recap

As the episode  “Faceless, Nameless” opens, we’re met with sirens as the Bau arrives on the scene of a crime. While we, the audience, are led to believe they’re at the location of Hotchner’s altercation with “The Reaper,” we soon find out that it’s the residence »

Fall 2009 TV: What’s Premiering Tonight?

23 September 2009 3:13 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

With the Fall season starting, we, once again, get a slew of new and returning shows - So many that it’s impossible to watch everything. I have a DVR and even with my nerdy television calculations (Yes, I do have them), I can’t figure out how to watch everything.

Let’s break this down to see what’s on tonight and whether or not it’s worth watching.

What’s New?

NBC: 8pm - Mercy

Mercy is about a whip-smart nurse (that’s not me, that’s straight out of the press release), Veronica Callahan, who has just returned to work at Mercy Hospital after a tour of service in Iraq. She’s not afraid to bend the rules to save her patients, but her outspoken attitude might wind up costing her job. (that’s my favorite part. “she’s not afraid to bend the rules”)

Former Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale is set to guest star in the crime drama "Criminal Minds" after fellow rocker Jon Bon Jovi backed out of the role.

Bon Jovi was first asked to play a Goth rock star FBI profilers believe is a serial killer in an episode of the CBS series, but had to back out.

Rossdale, whose acting credentials include roles in "Constantine," "The Game of Their Lives," and "How to Rob a Bank" among others, will fill in for the role; his episode will be aired sometime in the fall.

"Criminal Minds" depicts the adventures of a team of profilers from FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit (Bau). Joe Mantegna, Paget Brewster, Shemar Moore, Aj Cook, and Thomas Gibson star.

DVD Review: Criterion Edition of David Mamet’s Great ‘Homicide’

14 September 2009 4:01 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – I am an unabashed defender of nearly everything that David Mamet has ever made and the arrival of another one of his films under the Criterion banner makes for a special occasion in this critic’s household. The new release of Mamet’s “Homicide” (1991) is a must-own for fans of one of the most important playwrights of the last fifty years and an underrated filmmaker as well.

DVD Rating: 4.0/5.0 Mamet's films almost always deal with figures of authority and men who try to achieve excellence within classic roles like teacher, salesman, or, in the case of "Homicide," police officer. Of course, Mamet isn't interested in a traditional "man in blue" story of good guy fighting crime, even if the film starts by promising such a structure. Ultimately, the fight in "Homicide" is an internal one.

Homicide was released on DVD on September 8th, 2009.

Great extras intensify Mamet's best work (PopWire)

14 September 2009 9:38 AM, PDT | PopMatters | See recent PopMatters news »

McClatchy Newspapers (McT) -- Although 1991's "Homicide" (The Criterion Collection, $40) was only David Mamet's third outing as a writer-director, the film remains his best and most satisfying. The staccato, unnatural Mamet-speak is accounted for, but the dialogue is less jarring and artificial than in his other pictures. There are a couple of late-inning plot twists, but, unlike the rest of Mamet's films, this story does not hinge on such trickery. Most important, "Homicide" cuts deeper than most other Mamet movies, because its theme — a cop (Joe Mantegna) forced to confront his neglected Jewish heritage while investigating the murder of an elderly woman… »

New Criterion DVDs: Tell Me About It

9 September 2009 4:45 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

The Criterion Collection releases two new DVDs today, two movies with nothing much in common. They were originally released in theaters almost exactly fifty years apart, in 1941 and 1991. One is an elegant, period romance set during the Napoleonic Wars, and the other is a gritty, modern-day urban cop story. The only thing I can think that makes them kindred spirits is their endings. I can see the two heroes, played by Vivien Leigh in the former and Joe Mantegna in the latter, sitting together at the end of their tales. They're both staring off into space, thinking about what an odd hand life has dealt them, thinking about what lies ahead, if anything. The cop looks over at the lady. "What's your story?" he asks. She might respond, "I used to be somebody." And he might retort, in a New York accent, "Tell me about it."

And maybe she would. »

Remembering Elvis and Anabelle: Blake Lively's Real Breakthrough

9 September 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

This week The Cold Case remembers Elvis & Anabelle, the 2007 indie that links Gossip Girl, the Weinsteins and Edgar Allen Poe.

If Prince Charming brought Sleeping Beauty back from her deathly slumber in the media-saturated 21st century, then he'd be plastered across the tabloids as a necrophiliac perv while she'd be hounded by Oprah for a tell-all interview. And that's precisely what happens in 2007's Elvis & Anabelle, a dark and dreamy slice of Southern gothic romance that's not too far removed from our previous Cold Case, Lawn Dogs.

Playing like a cross between Six Feet Under and Sixteen Candles, writer-director Will Geiger's indie pairs Max Minghella's mortician Elvis with Blake Lively's bulimic beauty queen Anabelle. When she snuffs it at the very moment she's crowned Miss Texas Rose, her body winds up on the slab of his family's funeral home, which he's had to run singlehandedly since his »

[TV] Criminal Minds: Season Four

2 September 2009 9:00 AM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Crime procedurals often get lumped into one large genre with little distinguishing qualifications made to separate them from one another. If any distinction is made it’s between the more technically oriented CSI and the more character driven Law and Order series, of which there are many. Criminal Minds takes a third route and explores an alternate venue: the psychological profile. With a new serial killer for each episode, you’d think the shtick would have gotten tired by its fourth season; but you’d be wrong. The show remains as compelling as ever and makes for some great episodic television.

Since Mandy Patinkin (as Jason Gideon) walked off the set of Criminal Minds after the second season, the reins fell into the lap of Agent Aaron “Hotch” Hotchner (Thomas Gibson), Gideon’s once right-hand man. Under Hotch, the Behavioral Analysis Unit has successfully profiled dozens of killers and remained a tight-knit group. »

Craig Ferguson: We Need A New ‘Late Shift’

10 August 2009 9:29 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

I was listening to Craig Ferguson of The Late, Late Show speak last week about being on late night, earning his pilot's license, and his upcoming autobiography, which he'll be having different famous people read excerpts from until it gets released on September 22nd. He was genuinely a very engaging guy, not a "douchebag" himself (to use one of his favorite words) and additionally dropped many f-bombs during the conversation. Not that dropping the f-bomb is a sign of coolness, but he wasn't dropping them to be incendiary or shocking. You get the feeling that he's the kind of guy who lets them fly when he's chatting up his buddies on the weekends. Plus, his Scottish accent makes it that much cooler. But his whole presentation got me to thinking about 1996's HBO movie The Late Shift. If you haven't seen that, it's an extremely good luck at the Leno/Letterman "war' over "The Tonight Show." It »

Depp Rat Pack Rumor #2: Playing Dean Martin

14 July 2009 11:59 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

This is a rumor I can endorse. When Johnny Depp's name first circulated as a possible Frank Sinatra for Martin Scorsese, I thought it was way too predictable, at least as rumors go. Depp is a fantastic actor, and I don't think anyone would question that, but it takes a certain kind of role to get the most of your Johnny Depp investment. We didn't see it in his John Dillinger, and I don't think we'd see it out of his Sinatra.

However, Depp as Dino? Ain't that a kick in the head?

The Examiner says that Dean Martin's daughter, Deana, told a Boston radio station that Joe Mantegna will direct a bio-pic of the late singer/actor/largest minority RCA shareholder, based on a script written by Bonnie Hunt. That's a strange mix, and nowhere near as riveting as the idea for a Scorsese-helmed movie that would »
