DVD Playhouse—November 2009

Watchmen—The Ultimate Cut (Warner Bros.) Director Zack Snyder’s film of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel is as worthy an adaptation of a great book that has ever been filmed. In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters. Former masks Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson), Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) and still-operating Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley, in an Oscar-worthy turn) launch an investigation of their own, all while the Pentagon’s “Doomsday »

Eli Roth can't wait to get started on an Inglourious Basterds prequel - because he's already shot a scene with Cloris Leachman that he hopes will be included.
The actor/director reveals Quentin Tarantino left a lot on the cutting room floor after wrapping the first film - and Roth feels sure it's good enough to be included in another movie.
He says, "We have three scenes that we shot in Boston that take place before the war, and Quentin says if he does the prequel, he's going to use them. They're not going to be DVD extras.
"There's a great scene with me and Cloris Leachman. I go and get her to sign the (his trademark) bat. It's me and the little old Jewish ladies of the neighbourhood."
And Roth isn't the only 'basterd' keen to make another movie.
He tells Eonline.com, "Everybody would drop whatever they're doing to go back to work with Quentin. All the time, (co-star) Brad (Pitt) says, 'Prequel, prequel!' All the 'basterds' would jump on it in a second." »

Driving down a winding road in the middle of nowhere Pennsylvania, the car rounds a turn, climbing higher into the mountains. Perched on the side of a steep hill is an old farmhouse with peeling gray paint and gaping windows, surrounded by fields of dry and rustling corn. The front lawn slopes dangerously down and then sprawls out into an honest-to-god pumpkin patch. This is where the cast and crew for upcoming indie thriller The Fields are shooting today.
When we arrive, they are filming a scene in the pumpkin patch with Bev Appleton and Joshua Ormond. It’s October, and in the mountains of Pennsylvania the air is beyond chilly. A Pa wraps Josh, who plays Steven, in a thick coat between takes to keep him warm. Josh jumps up and down as he and his co-star make faces at each other as they wait for directors Tom Mattera »

5. Edward Scissorhands (1990): I would love to see how something like Edward Scissorhands would go over in today’s society. Clearly, if the school he’d be attending observed any of today’s weapon policies, he’d be expelled instantly and have at least 4 interviews on news programs and talk shows before the week was over about how the institution is “denying his fundamental right to express himself.” Edward Scissorhands reminds me a lot of many of the movies that came out in the late 80s, up until 1990. Well, how about that? Our previous reports that the Weinsteins were planning on releasing Quentin Tarantino’s war film, Inglourious Basterds, on DVD before year’s end for Award reasons have turned out to be true. The Playlist points us to Blu-ray.com where they confirm December 15th in the U.S. and December 7th in the UK as release dates for Inglourious Basterds on DVD and Blu-ray. Earlier this year, the financially strapped Weinsteins sold the DVD distribution rights to Universal who will be handling the release.
However, where the news has been confirmed of an early Inglourious Basterds release, this news differs in that it won’t be a “down and dirty, bear-bones” release after all. You’d think that by releasing it early to get it readily available to award voters (individually watermarked award screeners cost a helluva of a lot more than a general release on »

"Dancing with the Stars'" oldest competitor of the season, Tom DeLay, resigned from the show Tuesday night due to stress fractures in both of his feet. "The Insider"'s Samantha Harris asked the stars and pros if an age limit should be imposed on the show. Dancers responded with a unanimous, "No." Mark Ballas said, "Dancing has no age." Past "Dancing" competitors have been older than DeLay and avoided injury. Louis Van Amstel recalled, "Priscilla [Presley] was 62. She did it. It was no problem." Anna Trebunskaya posed the question, "Cloris Leachman did it for how many weeks and she was 80-something years old?" Donny Osmond is sad to see DeLay exit the show because, he realized, "I'm now the oldest dancer." He joked, "It doesn't matter. I dance like a 15-year-old." One of the youngest competitors this season, Louis Vito, projected that, "When I'm old, I don't want anyone telling me what to do. »

You've got to admire the filmmaking team behind The Fields for one thing: casting Tara Reid in their movie and expecting us to take it seriously. Okay, low blow and a cheap shot at the low budget horror production, but I couldn't resist. Today they've uploaded some pics straight from production and we've got them for you!
Veteran actress Cloris Leachman is a part of the production and the woman brings enough class to the table to offset the casting of Tara Reid (whoops!). These photos were taken yesterday:
From the project's MySpace page: "The Fields is a psychological thriller based on true events that took place in a small Pennsylvania town in 1973. It tells the story of a young boy and his family who are terrorized by an unseen presence. The film is being produced by Faust Checho with Mr. Big Productions, in association with MazWa Productions. With the short film anthology “New York, I Love You” (a sort of sequel to “Paris, je t’aime”) set for release October 16th, Vivendi Entertainment has released a ton of clips and I’ve posted all of them after the jump. While most film’s get four to eight clips released for promotional purposes, due to how large the cast is and how each person needs a clip when promoting the movie on a talk show, the studio has released a whopping 16 clips and it’s about sixteen minutes of the movie. So if you’ve been waiting for the film, you can see a lot of it right now. If you’re not familiar with “New York, I Love You”, the film’s got a huge cast and eleven directors telling stories about New York City and love. Take a look:
Here’s the synopsis, cast and directors: »

Anthology series are always a hit or miss. They usually depend on the producer’s ability to ensure a steady quality from one unrelated episode to another. The Twilight Zone has proved to be one of the best and most enduring in doing so, while One Step Beyond stays relatively obscure, even though they’re practically identical in format, with host John Newland stepping in to bookend each episode with soliloquies not unlike Rod Serling’s. He even opens with a kindred mantra:
"What you are about to see is a matter of human record. Explain it, we cannot. Disprove it, we cannot. We simply invite you to explore with us the amazing world of the unknown. To take that One Step Beyond."
The catch is, it made its on-air debut 10 months before The Twilight Zone.
The main difference between them is that—and I believe this is why Serling »

I think our original idea behind the Classic Cameos series was to pick one memorable cameo from a movie. However, The Muppet Movie is a long string of cameos, and why should I have to highlight only one? So many people pop up throughout the 1979 film -- my favorites are James Coburn, who owns the El Sleezo nightclub; Carol Kane's very silly "Myth? Yeth?" running gag; Mel Brooks in what's really more of an actual role than a cameo, as the mad scientist; and Orson Welles at the end of the film.
If that sounds like enough cameos, I've barely started. The Muppet Movie also has appearances from Dom DeLuise, Madeline Kahn and Telly Savalas, Paul Williams, Cloris Leachman, Bob Hope, Milton Berle, Edgar Bergen (and Charlie McCarthy), Elliot Gould and Big Bird. Director James Frawley supposedly appears onscreen briefly, but I'm not sure I'd recognize him. I've included »

After an amazing job hosting the Tony Awards this past June, Neil Patrick Harris was tapped to host The 61st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards.
How was he?
Yet again, pretty amazing. It seems as if he elevated the entire production to another level.
When the show first started and Neil came out singing, I have to be honest, I really didn’t enjoy it. I thought that while Neil has an amazing voice, the song just wasn’t anything great. Especially when compared to everything else that would happen during the course of the night.
Still, I didn’t give up hope. I love Neil Patrick Harris (Nph) and knew that ultimately he would do a great job. His background in acting, magic and Broadway created this perfect Doogie Howser showman. He didn’t disappoint. His jokes were great. His delivery was casual, but cool. I honestly believe that everyone in attendance thoroughly enjoyed themselves. »
