The Play’s the Thing for Aniston, Ashton, Demi, Brooke, and More

18 hours ago | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

Too many stars to fit in one frame: Anthony Mackie, Brooke Shields, Jennifer Aniston, David Cross, Liev Schrieber, Naomi Watts, Jeremy Sisto, Emmy Rossum, Julia Stiles, and Gaby Hoffmann are among the cast members taking a curtain call after performing in the 24 Hour Plays. Kevin Mazur/Getty Images. It has been an unusually starry fall on Broadway—Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig in A Steady Rain, Jude Law in Hamlet, and, later this month, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angela Lansbury in A Little Night Music, just to name a few. But rarely has there been such assemblage of big names on one Broadway stage as there was last night at the American Airlines Theater. Among the performers were Jennifer Aniston, David Cross, Billy Crudup, Rosario Dawson, John Krasinski, Ashton Kutcher, Eva Mendes, Demi Moore, Rosie Perez, Sam Rockwell, Liev Schrieber, Brooke Shields, Julia Stiles, Amber Tamblyn, and Naomi Watts. Oscars quiz: Can you spot the only best actress nominee?

31 October 2009 5:10 PM, PDT | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

Just one of the four roles pictured below earned an acting bid for its star. Which one? Here's the answer. Answer: Eleven years after she won in the supporting race for "Cactus Flower," Goldie Hawn was nominated in lead for a featherweight comic role widely dismissed as not worthy of the Oscars' attention in 1980. The other three performances pictured in this quiz were all iconic screen turns outrageously snubbed by academy members. "My Fair Lady" won eight Academy Awards in 1964, including best picture, but its "lady" wasn't even nominated, probably because voters resented the fact that Audrey Hepburn lip-synched to Marni Nixon singing. Rosalind Russell never won an Oscar, but was nominated four times. Unfortunately, she was snubbed for her greatest role — as the brazen stage mom Rose in "Gypsy." The role is so dramatically showy that it usually nabs awards attention. On Broadway, Angela Lansbury (1975), Tyne Daly (1990) and Patti LuPone »

Lansbury Has Earpiece To Thank For Tony Award

29 October 2009 9:06 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Legendary actress Angela Lansbury relied on an earpiece to help her remember her lines in her Tony Award-winning performance in Broadway play Blithe Spirit.

The Murder, She Wrote star took to the New York stage earlier this year as Madame Arcati in the Noel Coward play and landed the prestigious Tony Award for Best Featured Actress.

But the 84 year old confesses her success is largely down to the help of a carefully hidden earpiece - because her memory isn't as sharp as it used to be.

And Lansbury is not ashamed of receiving a little extra help.

She says, "It's not something you ever want to do, but if we're going to play important roles at our age, where our names are above the title on the marquee, we're going to ask for some support if we need it."

The actress will return to the stage in a Broadway revival of A Little Night Music this December. »

Bea Arthur leaves $300,000 to Lgbt youths

28 October 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

The Lgbt community has another reason to thank Bea Arthur for being a friend: Yesterday, the Ali Forney Center, a New York safe shelter for homeless gay youths, announced that the late, great Golden Girl left $300,000 to them in her will.

The Ali Forney Center's executive director, Carl Siciliano, said in a statement, "We are overwhelmed with gratitude that Bea saw that Lgbt youth deserve as much love and support as any other young person, and that she placed so much value in the work we do to protect them, and to help them rebuild their lives."

The center plans to purchase a new building to house 12 additional youths with the funds bequeathed by Bea Arthur, and name it in her honor.

"We work with hundreds of young people who are rejected by their families because of who they are," Siciliano said.

In fact, the center works with over 1,000 young people a year, »

Rachel Maddow's Favorite Movie

15 October 2009 10:00 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

MSNBC's superstar, the smart funny and enlightening Rachel Maddow, is obsessed with all things political... so maybe it's no surprise that she loves The Manchurian Candidate (1962). Politics is not just Maddow's job but her passion. You can see that in her work, just like you can tell which critics and bloggers actually love the cinema and not just the Oscars or the box office tallies or the sound of their own voice. (Not that there's anything wrong with loving those things too -- I recommend two of the three! -- but the cinema must come first)

I already love Rachel but tonight she won my heart anew by having good taste in movies. After playing a clip from The Manchurian Candidate...

That was fictional senator Johnny Iselin doing his best Joe McCarthy act in the film The Manchurian Candidate, the original one, my favorite movie of all time.

Blu-Ray Review: ‘The Wizard of Oz’ Given Release Befitting a Classic

12 October 2009 7:57 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – The Warner Brothers Blu-Ray release to mark the 70th anniversary of the beloved “The Wizard of Oz” is perhaps the most exhaustive and complete “Collector’s Edition” release to date. Warner Brothers, a studio that knows how to treat their classics, releasing gigantic sets for “Blade Runner” and “Casablanca” in recent years and with another for “Gone With the Wind” coming soon, has done it again, and arguably better than ever.

Blu-Ray Rating: 5.0/5.0

As for the film itself, what more could possibly be written about “The Wizard of Oz”? By some standards, it’s the most watched movie in world history, a film that has transcended its genre to simply become a part of the history of the planet. Have you ever heard someone criticize or complain about “The Wizard of Oz”? Me either.

The Wizard of Oz: 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’s Edition was released on DVD and Blu-Ray on September 29th, »

What I Watched, What You Watched: Installment #11

4 October 2009 4:04 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

This week, after reading over Laremy's list of Top Ten Coen Bros. Films I figured it was about time to watch the four remaining films of theirs I had not yet seen. On top of that I continued my viewing of the new 13 film Paul Newman DVD Collection with a film I loved that ultimately ended up inspiring me to watch another 1958 Newman film. It was a relatively slow week for me, but there's enough to make for a conversation.

As always, remember you can keep tabs on my personal Netflix queue right here. I now have 50 friends on the movie rental site and would love to have a few more if those of you out there with accounts are interested. Now, here's the recap of my week in movies...

Garry Marshall Directing Gere and Bening in Capra Remake

Production Weekly is reporting Richard Gere and Annette Bening will star opposite one another in State of the Union, a remake of Frank Capra's 1948 film starring Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn. Garry Marshall (Pretty Woman) will direct from a script by Rod Lurie (The Last Castle). The political-themed film is based on the Pulitzer Prize winning play by Howard Lindsay and Russell Crouse. In the original Tracy starred as an idealistic industrialist who is drafted to run for the presidency. As a candidate, Tracy is caught between the ruthless ambition of newspaper heiress (Angela Lansbury), who pulls the strings of his campaign, and the integrity of his wife (Hepburn), who believes in the man behind the political facade. It was originally reported by French magazine Tout le Cine that Julia Roberts would be starring in the film offering up a complete Pretty Woman reunion, but independent banner Identity Films »

DVD Playhouse—September 2009

By

Allen Gardner

The Human Condition (Criterion) Masaki Kobayashi’s epic (574 minutes) adaptation of Junpei Gomikawa’s six-volume novel was originally made and released as three separate films (1959-61), and is rightfully regarded as a landmark of Japanese cinema. Candide-like story of naïve, good-hearted Kaiji (Japanese superstar Tatsuya Nakadai) from labor camp supervisor, to Imperial Army solider, to Soviet Pow, and Kaiji’s struggle to maintain his humanity throughout. Unfolds with the mastery of a great novel, beautifully-shot, and a stunning example of cinematic mastery on the part of its makers. Four-disc set bonuses include: Interview with Kobayashi; Interview with Nakadai; Featurette; Trailer; Essay by critic Philip Kemp. Widescreen. Dolby 3.0 surround.

State Of Play (Universal) Russell Crowe stars as a veteran Washington D.C. political reporter investigating the murder of an aide to a rising congressional star (Ben Affleck), who also happens to be an old friend. »

[DVD Review] Bedknobs and Broomsticks

19 September 2009 | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

It's difficult to appreciate, or even accurately evaluate, a family film made about 40 years ago, especially when modern studios have made such sweeping advancements in the genre. Family movies can be good when they manage to do something innovative, when they transcend generations, appealing to both children and parents alike without pandering and without sacrificing quality by assuming their audience is made up of idiots, as countless kids' films are wont to do. The problem with Bedknobs and Broomsticks is that as it stands today, it doesn't really work for any audience, even when you do avoid juxtaposing it with the superior films of today.

Bedknobs and Broomsticks concerns an "apprentice witch" named Miss Price (Angela Lansbury) who is forced by government order to take in three kids. Orphaned kids, natch. Miss Price is at first cold and demanding towards the children, but they get the chance to retaliate when »

DVD Review: Delightful ‘Bedknobs and Broomsticks’ is Timeless

15 September 2009 11:33 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – When it was announced that Disney would be releasing a new special edition of “Bedknobs and Broomsticks,” the little kid in me woke up and started pounding on my memory banks. I have such vivid memories of watching the film as a child, mouth agape, eyes wide, and falling in love with the blend of animation and live-action that looked so revolutionary to this future critic’s young mind. Pick up the DVD and inspire a child you know.

DVD Rating: 3.5/5.0 “Bedknobs and Broomsticks” is a film so ingrained in the memory of my childhood that I can’t really approach it critically. It’s difficult to separate the personal meaning the film has for me on rainy Sundays around the Vcr with my mother and sister and look at it without bias. But I bet I’m not alone. And if you remember “Bedknobs” with the same fondness, »

Bea Arthur Remembered at R-Rated Tribute

Golden, indeed: Heavyweights from the stage and TV gathered at Broadway's Majestic Theatre Monday to pay tribute to the late Beatrice Arthur, mixing tears with loud laughs - and ribald recollections that would have been bleeped had the 2½ ceremony been broadcast on TV. Instead, speaking live before a near-capacity house, Rue McClanahan told of the time her Golden Girls costar opened in her own 2002 one-woman Broadway show and graciously invited McClanahan and her husband, Morrow Wilson, to the opening-night performance and party afterwards. Admitting Arthur - who died of cancer in April, at 86 - often wasn't at her best when she was drinking, »

.From the makers of Mary Poppins. is on the bottom cover of Bedknobs and Broomsticks. It.s not like you couldn.t tell that since it almost seems like a re-imagining of that film and shares some personnel. However, that doesn.t mean that B&B doesn.t cast its spell and turn into a very enjoyable film. It.s the 1940s and England is fighting the war with Nazi Germany. London is being blitzed from above. To protect the city.s children, they.re being sent to the countryside to live with surrogates until the bombs stop falling from the sky.
