Marc Christian MacGinnis, who won a multimillion-dollar settlement in 1991 from the estate of his ex-lover, actor Rock Hudson, after convincing a jury Hudson had knowingly exposed him to AIDS, has died. He was 56.

Known as Marc Christian, he died of pulmonary problems June 2 at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank. The details were confirmed Friday by his sister, Susan Dahl, who said she did not publicly announce his death earlier because of her brother's wish for privacy.

Nicolas Cage: Bad To The Bone

By

Alex Simon

It’s an inevitable event in every accomplished artist’s life: if you go back on the timeline of their existence and stop in adolescence, almost all of our greatest actors, writers, filmmakers, musicians and painters went through tumultuous, tortured teenage years, often scorned, almost universally ridiculed by their peers and elders alike for the cardinal sin of being “weird.” Most people run from their inner nerd as they grow into adulthood, masking it behind toned muscle, fine clothing and the right haircut, struggling to be that cool guy or gal whom we knew had all the answers and the clearest skin back when such things started to be de rigeur in our lives (and if you live in Southern California, continue to be).

Nicolas Cage is that rare movie star who not only never seemed to care if he was cool, »

11/17 ~ Todays special boys and girls. Are you one of them?

Mischa, Marty and Rachel

1897 Frank Fay, aka Mr. Barbara Stanwyck. The theory goes that their troubled marriage was the basis of A Star is Born. That story is so big it's practically it's own franchise. I can't stop thinking about it today: Stanwyck through the lens of Gaynor, Garland, Streisand. Yummy!) Even if it's only an urban La legend, I love to think about it. Fay, a popular comedic actor, was also the originator of the Harvey role (on stage) before Jimmy Stewart got to it.

1901 Lee Strasberg, the hugely influential acting teacher that helped popularize "The Method" Students included... well, basically a whose who of late 40s / early 50s giants of the silver screen.

That James Franco Appearance On 'General Hospital' Really Is Performance Art

13 November 2009 9:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Depending on your age, James Franco is either "the stoner from 'Freaks & Geeks'" or "the stoner from 'Pineapple Express.'" Or Harry Osborn I suppose, if you've seen the little-known comic book adaptation of "Spider-Man."

What you might not realize is that Franco has also dipped his toes into the world of avant-garde filmmaking. He's allied himself with one artist in particular: John Carter, who operates under the professional name Carter. The two collaborated on a 2008 film, "Erased James Franco," an hour-long piece in which Franco re-creates past performances -- his own and others, particularly Rock Hudson and Julianne Moore -- without providing any context. It seems that this Franco/Carter partnership is also what led to the actor taking his soon-to-begin guest gig on TV soap opera "General Hospital."

The revelation came from a recent interview Carter gave to Movieline. "It was an idea that I posed to him, »

Nine Men We Still Miss: AIDS Robs the World of Some of the Brightest Lights

12 November 2009 2:29 PM, PST | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

The original reality show broke ground with Pedro.

On November 11, 1994, the day after the final episode of The Real World: San Francisco aired, Pedro Zamora succumbed to complications from AIDS. Most of the world had only known him since June of that year, but the 22-year-old had made the most of the short time he’d spent on earth.

Born in Cuba, raised in Miami, Pedro was diagnosed as HIV+ while still in high school, and had dedicated his life to being an educator on the disease.  Prior to appearing on the groundbreaking MTV reality show, he had already spoken about the disease with Oprah Winfrey, Phil Donahue, and before a session of Congress.

But it was by appearing on The Real World: San Francisco that he managed to have a global impact. For many young people, Pedro was the first real, out gay man they ever saw »

Exclusive: The Real Story (and the Mastermind) Behind James Franco's Soap Opera Career Move

12 November 2009 7:20 AM, PST | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

When General Hospital announced that James Franco would be joining the soap opera for a lengthy story arc, pop culture pundits couldn't fathom the movie star's motivation. Over here at Movieline, though, we sensed the guiding hand of Carter, Franco's frequent artistic collaborator. The two men have embarked on a wide variety of art projects that play with and deconstruct Franco's image, including a VMan photo shoot that handed the actor a flamethrower and covered his face in shaving cream, and Erased James Franco, a 63-minute film (playing November 15 at the Castro Theater in San Francisco) that finds Franco idiosyncratically recreating Rock Hudson from Seconds and Julianne Moore from Safe, as well as some of his own lesser roles.

Yesterday I spoke to Carter, who revealed that he was the mastermind who convinced Franco to appear on General Hospital -- the beginning of their most ambitious collaboration yet. »

Tab Hunter to Reveal Dark Side of Hollywood in New Documentary

12 October 2009 1:18 PM, PDT | Manny the Movie Guy | See recent Manny the Movie Guy news »

Actor Tab Hunter is set to appear in the documentary "Tab Hunter Confidential" about what it was like to live a lie in Hollywood. Titled after Hunter's 2005 autobiography, the documentary will be directed by Jeffrey Schwartz (""Wrangler: Anatomy of an Icon," and "Spine Tingler! The William Castle Story").

The documentary will profile Hunter as a closeted gay actor at a time when Hollywood forced their homosexual stars to hide so they could market them as heterosexuals. Allan Glaser, Hunter's longtime partner, and Neil Koenigsberg are set to produce.

A little bio about Hunter from Wikipedia:

Arthur Gelien was signed to a contract at Warner Bros. and christened "Tab Hunter" by his first agent, Henry Willson.[2] His good looks got him pegged as a screen idol. He landed a role in the film Island of Desire opposite Linda Darnell. However, it was his co-starring role as young Marine Danny in 1955's »

Action flicks. Two-fisted tales. Guy movies. Whatever you want to call them, writer, producer, and director Walter Hill is one of the living masters, with a resume full of classics from The Getaway (1972), to the Alien series, and the definitive eighties action-comedy blockbuster, 48 Hrs. (1982).

2009 marks the 30th anniversary of The Warriors (1979), Hill’s surreal “street gang on the run” cult classic, and his breakout success as a director.

Jon: A couple years ago, you did an audio commentary and on-camera intro for a new DVD edition of The Warriors. It was the first time I’d ever seen you; is it my imagination, or have you kept a low profile over the years?

Walter Hill: I’d never done a commentary before on one of my films. I don’t like the idea of explaining a movie; I »

Liev Schreiber plays butchest drag queen ever.

The Village Voice's Michael Musto had a chance to talk with Elliot Tiber, about getting the gayer aspects of his memoir Taking Woodstock to the screen.

Turns out before Ang Lee took on the film project, Tiber had passed on working with two film studios that wanted to completely de-gay his story.

And even with Ang Lee at the helm, Taking Woodstock is not exactly Brokeback. Tiber points out that his original memoir contains anecdotes about Robert Mapplethorpe, Tennessee Williams, and Rock Hudson, and none of those made it into the final film.

Musto also spoke with Demetri Martin, who plays Tiber in the film. Martin says that a scene involving his character at NY's Eagle leather bar wound up on the cutting room floor. "I wore a leather vest and tight, dark jeans. But the regulars really did it up!"

Emmy-Winning Producer Frand Dies

31 July 2009 9:16 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Battlestar Galactica producer Harvey Frand has died at the age of 68.

The star passed away on 23 July after he was hospitalised in Los Angeles with respiratory problems.

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Frand began his TV career in the 1970s at NBC News but landed his first job as producer in 1982, working on Rock Hudson's series The Devlin Connection.

He went on to produce a variety of shows in the 1980s and '90s, including The Twilight Zone, The Lazarus Man, Strange World, and The Young Riders.

But he was most recognised for his work on the sci-fi hit Battlestar Galactica after signing on to the project in 2003. His work behind the scenes garnered him a slew of honours - he won a Peabody Award in 2005, an AFI Award in 2006 and an Emmy Award last year.

He picked up his second nomination for the prestigious ceremony earlier this month when the shortlist for the Primetime Emmy Awards were announced.

Paying tribute to Frand, studio executive Todd Sharp for NBC Universal says, "Harvey was the Wizard of Oz, the man behind the curtain, the train engineer, the orchestra conductor, the school guidance counsellor. He was adored by executive producers and production assistants, studio and network, cast and crew."

Frand is survived by his partner of 32 years, Bill Bowersock, according to the Hollywood Reporter. »

During the 1960s and '70s, buff male actor Rock Hudson struggled to keep his personal life and sexuality out of the media as publications threatened to damage his reputation as America's wholesome, hunky hearthhrob by publishing exposes about his homosexuality. It wasn't until his death from AIDS in 1985 that his friends divulged Hudson's efforts to keep his homosexuality a secret.
